Re: THE LOST RIDERS - A Dinosaur Species

Postby Saren » Fri Nov 15, 2013 10:56 am

Hey there!
So this has been explained somewhere but it might have been on a specific dino's thread, so I'll see if I can clarify :3

Swords are a close-range weapon, which wouldn't be much use while on top of a huge dinosaur. Long-range weapons such as bows and spears are more convenient.
...i thought I'd have more to say than that but apparently not.
You make a good point regarding he dino not being able to help them, though- maybe daggers instead? Or long knives? They'd be easier. One of my characters will have throwing knives anyway.

knives are fine. Swords just aren't practical for fighting while atop a dino.

(before you read this, please note that I am not trying to come across as mean or anything like that; I'm just curious as to why you've said they can't have swords)

A few things here... First of all, swords aren't modern. We all know they were used in medieval times by knights and whatnot, but they were around long before then. According to Wikipedia, the earliest sword-like weapons (believed to be long daggers, but daggers are very similar to swords) were from around 3300 BC. Second, the armor that they have is very similar to the kind of armor that knights used, and that kind of armor came after swords. So if they had that, then why wouldn't they have come up with swords? Which brings me to my third point. What would they use to defend themselves if their dino wasn't able to help them? They probably would have come up with some weapon to defend themselves, so why not swords? Bows and arrows wouldn't work for close-range (can they have bows, though? just wondering, 'cause they'd be great for hunting), so they'd probably want a close-quarters weapon - such as a sword.

I'm just bringing this up because I would love for my character to be able to have a sword and considering everything I've just said, it would be a bit strange if they hadn't created something somewhat like, if not exactly like, a sword.

Re-reading this, I realize I need to answer in more detail.
First of all, although swords date as you say back to around 3300 B.C, bows and arrows date to about 16,000 B.C. and spears date to over 400,000 B.P., back into prehistory (way before medieval times.)
Secondly, true, the armor is similar to that from around or after the era of swords, but because of the Mat'chari tribes' isolation in the desert, and their use of dinosaurs for war steeds, they never had the need to invent swords (as they are impractical on dino-back for fighting), but they did over time have the need to invent armor to protect against arrows, spears, and thrown daggers.
However, you have a good point, and of course your character may have a sword for ground-fighting or hunting. That's fine. But i highly suggest that they use another type of weapon while going to war with their Bernikesaur :3
Also, this wasn't brought up, but the reason the Mat'chari are still using "primitive" weaponry and warfare tactics in this modern day and age is because of their isolation. Normally, cultures evolve because of trade and interaction with other different cultures, but because these tribes are only interacting with themselves, their society has less variation and opportunities to be able to upgrade their culture.

Hope this helped :3

I am impressed with how though out you've got this, even down to the cultural interactions and evolution of weaponry. So cool!

Thank you!
I know, anthropology and history are my favorite subjects, so I also like to get down to logical (if not entirely realistic) facts ;)

Agreed, there are so many little details that she thought about, and the amazing thing is that they all "come together", as I call it. It makes sense as a whole, and the details don't conflict or jumble together, as mine probably would xD
