Clamfoot watched as Furzetuft went on her way, wending through the crowd. He caught a glimpse of her touching noses with her friend, then the two were lost in the twist of bodies.
The delegate shook herself, realizing with chagrin that she had been staring agape.
She felt warm, like the sun’s rays had found their way under her skin; Furzetuft had sniffed out her worst insecurities and then wrapped them in a gentle net of safety all in a few breaths. It was… exhilarating.

She sat where she was, tucking her front paws behind her tail to watch the market cats socialize and trade in the brisk autumn sun.
The afternoon’s soft breeze carried with it the slightest hint of rot, and Clamfoot let his mind wander to the lush forests to the northeast, just past the horizon. How many colors of leaves might one find there, he mused.

A friendly trill sounded to his right, and he turned his head to see Clamfoot approaching, with another fishercat by her side — this cat didn’t come into the town’s hub often, and he couldn’t quite recall her name…

“Mizzlemist had some shopping to catch up, so I volunteered to escort her,” Tidechaser chirped. Ah, Mizzlemist. That was it. Clamfoot nodded to the white cat in greeting.
“You look cozy,” Teased Tidechaser, before either of the others got a word in.
“Er, yeah, that cat we met gave it to me as a gift for helping her,” Clamfoot murmured, shouldering the blanket. Tidechaser sat down next to him, brushing against the fibers with a front paw.
    “Oh, it is cozy. Lucky.”
Mizzlemist also looked curiously at the blanket, but didn’t comment.
“Who here sells herbs?” It asked quietly. “To stave off infection. You know, I think it’d be good to have… just in case.” Its voice was deep and gentle, but a little stilted too, as if it wasn’t used to speaking in full sentences.
Clamfoot’s ears perked up. “It's close, I can walk you there!”
”I’ll come too,” Tide said. “We’ve gotta stay together, us two are going back to the docks after this.”
The three padded closer to the center of the market. Clamfoot kept her eyes peeled for the friendly gardener he knew lived around here, bartering their herbs, but his train of thought was cut off by a caterwaul and a beaver-colored ball of fur and energy shoving through the crowd.

“Make way, make way!” They yelped, and Clamfoot heard Tidechaser let out an irate sigh beside him. They both knew who this was — if their triumphant shouting wasn’t enough of a clue, the shiny goggles on their head made this cat unmistakable as Crackerjack, the wandering rogue who traveled with Merrowcrest’s local herald.
The herald himself, Loamshisper, trailed a little ways behind his buddy, smiling apologetically at the cats he passed.
“Herald Loamwhisper is here to report to your delegate! And we brought cool stuff from the city, too!”

“Could I have your help with this?” Clamfoot murmured to Tidechaser. She nodded, turning to Mizzlemist. She must’ve given it directions to the herb booth, because Mizzle dipped its head to the two of them and wandered off, leaving only the tangy scent of fish in its wake.
To Clamfoot’s unease, Crackerjack’s excited announcement had drawn a small crowd. Not that she needed privacy for this, but it was hard to think with so many cats watching her. Still, one must persevere.
Loamwhisper was undoing one of the saddlebags affixed to Crackerjack, and carefully drew out of it a large sack. From the sack emanated a distinct rattling, hissing noise that made a few cats step back in alarm, but Clamfoot knew what was inside and was elated.
Loamwhisper looked to Clamfoot. “Could you have these delivered to a culinarian?” He let the sack loosen in his grip, revealing a peek at what was inside — hundreds of tiny seed pods. When prepared correctly, the seeds inside could give a cat a burst of stamina and mental clarity, and were coveted in the cold months.
“One of the city’s delegates were going to have these brought here in a few weeks, but Jack had some empty space in their bag so we took the liberty of bringing them ourselves.” Loamwhisper sounded pleased.
Clamfoot purred a warm thank-you to the two, and even Tidechaser looked cheerful for once. A small black cat volunteered to take the seed pods, and Clamfoot, Tidechaser, Loamwhisper and Crackerjack took the opportunity to get away from the group, making their way to Clamfoot’s dwelling.

“Have you brought any other delightful gifts from the city, or just news?” Clamfoot half-joked.
    Loam smiled, gratified. “You’ll see.”

After the War
Last Explore Post | Last Response Received

Feeling her fur bristle with fear, Marietta paused to gather her thoughts. The cold wind whispered softly in her ears, sending a gentle wave of serenity through the crashing tides of anxiety that threatened to overwhelm her. "We should mask our scents and try to avoid it," she advised the patrol, her voice steady despite her trembling heart. "There's no sense in provoking it if it might not even cross our paths."

The patrol exchanged uncertain glances, their expressions a mix of concern and hesitation. Fidgetclaw lifted his gaze to the she-cat and nodded thoughtfully. "Let's head back and inform Quiethowl. She and Risingsky can set up precautions to keep the badger at bay," he suggested, carefully gathering the herbs he had collected. A wave of relief washed over Marietta as Fidgetclaw began to lead the patrol back toward the familiar safety of their camp.

As they neared the cave's entrance, the soft glow of the interior beckoned them home, the crisp leaf-fall air whistling a gentle welcome as the six cats dispersed, each eager to return to their routines. Fidgetclaw matched Marietta's pace as they trotted toward the leader's den, his presence a comforting anchor beside her. "I hope it wasn't a mistake to let that badger be," the she-cat murmured, her voice low and laced with unease.

Fidgetclaw met her gaze, his blue eyes filled with understanding. "Sometimes it's wiser to leave things be," he replied, brushing his tail gently against Marietta's side, reassuring her. In return, she managed a soft, nervous smile as they slipped into the den.

Quiethowl was curled around a small crystal nestled in the corner, her blind eyes unfocused yet somehow aware. A soft purr rumbled from her throat as she caught the duo’s scent. "Hello, dears," Quiethowl greeted, her tail swishing joyfully. Fidgetclaw rested his chin atop her head in respect before stepping back to address her with a sense of urgency.

"We detected a badger in the vicinity, but it didn’t seem to be actively wandering near our camp," he relayed. "The scent wasn’t overpowering, so it may have just been passing through," Marietta added, her heart racing slightly as she spoke. Quiethowl nodded thoughtfully, her expression contemplative as she considered their next steps. “I’ll discuss this with Risingsky,” the Listener meowed. “We’ll devise a plan, but if it has already passed, there’s no need to remain worried.”

Turning her gaze toward Marietta, Quiethowl’s tone shifted to excitement. “Now, I believe it’s time for your ceremony,” she purred, her voice imbued with warmth and anticipation. Marietta's heart leaped with a mix of excitement and apprehension. “I was actually wondering if I could choose my name?” she asked hopefully, glancing at Fidgetclaw.

“Could you give us a moment?” she requested, earning a nod from the Healer, who understood the importance of this moment for her. "Of course," he replied, slipping out of the den to give them privacy. As he walked across the camp, Fidgetclaw couldn’t help but wonder what name Marietta had in mind.

“Hey, Fig!” a familiar voice boomed, drawing Fidgetclaw's attention. Weaselchirp, a sturdy brown tom, stood by the fresh-kill pile, sorting through the catches with deft paws. “Have you eaten yet?” he asked as Fidgetclaw padded over, exhaustion reflected in his features.

“Not yet, I just got back from patrol,” he murmured, glancing at the fresh prey before him.

“Why’d they put you on patrol? I thought you weren't s’posed to do that,’” Weaselchirp remarked, grabbing a small rabbit and inspecting its quality.

“Quiethowl wanted me there in case Marietta wasn’t ready to patrol yet,” Fidgetclaw explained, selecting a plump mouse from the pile.

“Makes sense,” Weaselchirp nodded. “Any scent of Bear?”

A chill ran down Fidgetclaw’s spine at the mention of the missing tom. Weaselchirp and his mate had been frantically searching for their son since he left the clan in search of his birth family.

“No, I'm sorry,” Fidgetclaw replied gently, meeting the worker’s gaze. He could see the sadness and worry shining in Weaselchirp’s green eyes.

“It’s okay; I doubt he’s even around here anymore,” the brown tom mumbled, the resignation in his tone evident as he turned and headed toward the nursery.

Fidgetclaw watched him slip inside the den, his heart heavy, before the sound of pawsteps drew his attention. Marietta padded up to him, her face alight with excitement. “Want to share this mouse?” he asked, meeting her sparkling eyes as Fidgetclaw gestured toward the prey.

“Sure! We’ll have to be quick; Quiethowl will be conducting my ceremony soon,” she purred, settling beside the glistening pool at the center of the camp.

“So, are you ready for the change?” Fidgetclaw asked between bites, his blue eyes focused on her.

“I think so,” the torbie replied between chews, her enthusiasm dimming a notch, “but I haven’t really given it much thought.”

“You won’t be Marietta anymore. You’ll be known by an entirely different name,” he reminded her gently, taking another bite before pushing the rest of the mouse toward her. The weight of his words settled over her, and she felt her excitement wane slightly, replaced by the realization that her former identity would soon shift into something new.

Fidgetclaw noticed her change in demeanor and leaned closer, his voice low and comforting. “You don’t have to do this if you don’t—”

“I do,” Marietta said firmly, her amber eyes sparkling with resolve as she lifted her head. “I want to do this.” Their eyes met, locked in a silent understanding before the commanding yowl of Quiethowl echoed across the camp, signaling that the ceremony was about to begin. The she-cat stood, shaking out her fur as Fidgetclaw rose beside her.

“I’ll remember you as Marietta, even if our ancestors call you by a new name,” he mumbled softly before padding away, giving her space as the ritual approached.

A twinge of sorrow pierced her heart, and her brows furrowed in anxiety as she absorbed the weight of this life-changing moment. “Marietta, are you coming?” The familiar voice of Snowbird called to her, prompting the torbie to turn and see the elder worker’s kind face.

“Yes, sorry, just a little nervous,” she replied, smiling as Snowbird pressed her cheek against Marietta's, offering warmth and reassurance.

“I understand,” she meowed, her voice tinged with nostalgia. “I remember when I was just a paw, waiting anxiously for my naming ceremony.” As she spoke, she and her companion joined the semicircle of gathered cats. “This is one of the most significant days in a clan cat's life.”

Marietta nodded thoughtfully, her heart racing as Quiethowl ascended the High Stone, its surface weathered by countless ceremonies. Her amber eyes fixed on the Listener.

“One among us has proven to be a loyal and trusted worker,” Quiethowl announced, her voice resonating throughout the cave. “Today, she has earned her name and rightful place among us.”

From beneath the High Stone, Risingsky stepped forward, her green gaze sparkling like emeralds. “Marietta, please join our Speaker.” All eyes turned toward the torbie she-cat, whose heart pounded in her chest. With a deep breath, she padded forward, attempting to mask the whirlwind of doubts roaring in her mind. Risingsky's encouraging gaze anchored her, a silent promise that she was worthy of this moment.

“You have come a long way,” Quiethowl began, her voice steady. “And now you sit before us as a strong, dedicated worker. From this day forward, you shall be known as Windseeker.”

The clan erupted into jubilant cheers, the sound echoing through the camp—a vibrant chorus celebrating her new identity. Windseeker felt pride rise in her chest at the sound while Risingsky gently placed her chin atop the newly named cat’s head. Yet, beneath that wave of joy, a flicker of unease lingered, whispering that perhaps this honor was a burden she had not yet entirely accepted.

For now, Windseeker allowed herself to bask in the warmth of her clan's chants, their voices gradually fading as the cats dispersed across the camp. Some approached her, their faces alight with joy, offering hearty congratulations. She managed a smile, nodding and thanking each one, though her mind was elsewhere, clouded by uncertainty.

Eventually, she found herself standing before Fidgetclaw, a small smile gracing his face. “Good choice,” he meowed, his tone sincere. “It suits you well.”

“I thought it would,” Windseeker replied softly, her voice barely above a whisper. The shadows in her amber eyes spoke of her inner turmoil. “Would you come with me out to the forest?” Fidgetclaw met her gaze with a reassuring nod, and together, they slipped past their clanmates and out of camp.

Greypaw’s mind couldn’t help but conjure up scenes of ghouls and gnashing teeth as he scampered after the two warriors, leaving the stale scent of the cave behind him.

“One second, I smell something.” Foxwhisper mutters, bounding off into the brush. The patrol stills, waiting for her to return.

“What on earth could she be doing?” Kazoo mutters, shifting on his paws as Foxwhisper reemerges from the brush, holding a bird (+ 4fp) in her jaws.

“Oh.” Kazoo echoes, watching as the molly proudly trots past and the patrol continues on. “Well, I bet I could find something too-” Kazoo mutters, bounding ahead despite Toadstrike’s protests as he rummages through the brush. Soon the patrol loses sight of Kazoo as he bounds through the brush, squirming down under a fallen log, raking his claws through the dirt as he forces himself through. He stills, his butt in the air, as he notices something shiny in the tall grass ahead of him. He sniffs and then forces himself forward, his blue eyes wide and shining as he takes in the iridescent shining object. It was as if the stars themselves had fallen to earth. (+1 shooting star (auto passes 1 rare or under edit).

As Kazoo returns to the patrol, Greypaw is now carrying a bundle of bugs carefully wrapped in a leaf. (+1 fp (bugs).

“Are you done with your little adventure?” Foxwhisper asks, shifting on her paws. “We should probably keep going.”

“Right,” Kazoo agrees, tucking away his sparkly shard from the skies for later. The patrol heads off, eager to see what else might await them.

Frogpounce spent the next couple of hours fishing in the river, to no avail. Although he did find a couple of newts under an overturned rock, so at least this trip wasn’t a total waste! (+2 fp (newt), +2 fp (newt))

Frogpounce sighed, shaking his pelt and pushing through a set of leaves (+1 willow leaves, +1 daisy leaf). Although he was fine with some of the newts he’d gotten, he was really wishing he had a big trout to eat, and the more he walked the more his stomach growled and the more he thought about it.

While the trio of cats left all together, it didn't stop them from splitting up once they hit the territory. Avalanche was too excited to get to work on learning herbs - where they grew, what they treated, the best ways to store them. Being a medicine cat meant he had to know all of this stuff. He had to know how to treat his Clan properly.

His nose pushed at the roots of the large trees, nose twitching as he sniffed at them. Herbs tended to be fragrant, sharper to the nose than flowers and fruits were. Sometimes the smell was bad, sometimes it was pleasant. No matter what, sharp smells usually meant some type of healing quality. Pushing at a clump of clover, his ears perked as one of those smells brushed into his nose. Teeth gently nipping at the root of the plant, he plucked it from the ground, managing to snag it into his fur before moving to find the rest of his patrol.
    [ + 1 tormentil, + 1 XP ]

Meanwhile, Clayfur was determined to fulfill his promise on procuring a whole pile of fresh kill. His first find was a plump squirrel, nibbling on a seed it had found. As he ducked closer to the ground, letting his belly fur brush against the grass as the morning dew chilled him to the bone, he watched as it sat back on its haunches, holding the seed between its two front paws. Once he got close enough, he bunched up all of strength into his hind legs before leaping.

Just as he intended, he soared through the air. Two paws landed on the small creature, trapping it between his front paws as his mouth came down on its neck for the killing bite. With a gleeful squeal, he lifted his head, the squirrel dangling out of his jaws.
    [ + 3FP squirrel, + 3 XP ]

"Great catch." Eaglestar purred as he crept out of the brush, dipping his head. "Amazing form. Keep that up, yeah?"

“Oriens!” A sharp tone shot through the underbrush as a loud laugh followed, a dash of white fur cut through the leaf litter amongst the ground as a cat ran through.

Oriens lifted his head and called back with a grin on his face, almost falling over as he shouted, “Come on Albatross, you aren't already calling it quits on me now are you!” Over his shoulder stumbling and quickly righting himself with a yelp as another feline crashed into the ground where he’d been.

“Get back here!” Albatross snapped, jumping towards the other with a yowl as Oriens went wide eyed tripping over their own paws to try and get away as Albatross collided with them and sent both of them flying wing over halo into the dirt.

Albatross shot his paws down and slammed them down onto Oriens shoulders with a huff, his wings splaying out towering over them, “You, are a menace.” He hissed, shoving his face into Oriens who jerked their head back and smirked.

“Come on, just one apple seed won't be anything to the Archangels, you know this you suck up.” Oriens chirped, batting the wing on his face up and out at Albatross’ nose who pulled back and glared at him.

Albatross growled and shoved at the other before backing off, “Eonian is going to lock you up in the Cages for another millenia when they hear about this.” He snapped, his wings held tightly against him and ears airplaning against his skull.

Oriens just tilted his head at him from his place in the dirt, “Eonian doesn’t need to know about this though.” They said, rolling over and standing with a shake. “Eonian is also so far up the Archangels' feathers they don’t even pay attention to their newest Seraphs.” They sat and started to smooth down some of their tousled fur with a side glance at Albatross.

The other Seraphim narrowed his eyes before letting out a huff of air and dropping their wings, “Why do you even risk all this for those anyways.” He asked, flicking a wing out towards the apple seeds braided as Oriens would like to say stealthily into his fur. Oriens blinked and raised his head before letting out a harsh bark of laughter.

Albatross blinked and jumped back as Oriens fell to the dirt in hysterics, the cloth around his neck tangling into a knot as he writhed on the ground. After a full few minutes of this Albatross hissed and shot forward to smack his paw across the others skull which dragged a yelp from them as they shot up from the ground and away from the offending paw.

“Come on! What do you have against laughter?” Oriens whined, raising a paw to dab at his forehead with exaggerated pain. Albatross glared at him in warning as his wings slowly unfolding as he was about to take off, Oriens’ eyes went wide and he scuttled across the ground, paws held out in a ‘wait wait wait-’ as Albatross stared at him.

“Okay! Okay, it’s just.” Oriens floundered for a moment as Albatross lowered his wings, “You're the only angel that's ever asked that, even when they threw me in the Cages before they never asked Why.” He explained rapidly, the wing on his head held out in an alarmed angle.

Albatross stilled before blinking, “They never..” His eyes narrowed and he shook his head, “Why wouldn’t they have asked, you do this often enough!” Albatross snapped as Oriens just looked at him half amazed and half dumbfounded.

“I don't know, they caught me with the seeds that time and just threw me at the Cages” Oriens explained with a shrug, “I keep doing it just to see what they’d do if I never stopped and you keep foiling all my attempts to get caught by them.”

“You were trying to get caught.” Albatross repeated, staring at Oriens like he’d just been tasked with learning a new language from scratch, his wings dropping more as Oriens nodded with a wide grin.

    MERROWCREST !!
    xspideysense archive last post

honeyed sunlight gilded the gentle contours and folds of the herald’s face. a wandering light flickered in those chartreuse eyes, the rhythm of his steps not quite in sync with the rest of the party. at every bend, the herald’s gaze seemed to linger upon the vibrant splash of sun-kissed florals, upon the deep raspy song of wild grasses, upon the flickering dance of shadow and light. and if clamfoot wasn't mistaken, the herald seemed to be searching for something. or someone━

a booming crash splintered the silence.

argh, get it off me!! nasty little─” sunlight fractured, refracting in tiny slivers of prismatic light off a pair of goggles. and like a little firecracker, a cacophony of color and sound followed the herald’s spunky helper. they pranced about in a faltering three-legged dance, trying to swat at the two dandelion-puffed critters cozied upon the soft furs of their saddle. one already had a greedy little paw in one of the saddlebags.

“looks like you’ve gotten yourself in quite the pickle.” a secret smile bloomed on the curve of loamwhisper’s lips. he stifled a chuckle. “what─”

“fluffy things fell out of a tree or jumped me for a snack or or or…” crackerjack huffed, a tiny irritated puff of air sending his pale bangs awry. “hey, a little help here? anyone?” (+3fp irk, +2fp irk nymph)

As Willowclaw crested over the hill, she could feel her paws dragging. Another long day of travel, another long day without seeing another cat, another long day of trekking further away from her home. Er — what was her home. Her home forest and all its memories had burnt down faster than she could have possibly imagined. She had fled, stayed safe across a thunderpath from the inferno. When the ashes had settled, she found only some of her clanmates and buried them. StarClan willing the rest had made it out as she had, but Willowclaw was no longer holding onto that optimism. She'd been traveling for several moons now, at the behest of StarClan, waiting desperately for another sign that she had made it to wherever they were telling her to go. At this point, she wasn't convinced she'd ever actually get there. But hey, if any cat was used to traveling under the whims of StarClan, Willowclaw thought she was probably at the top of the list.

As Willowclaw began padding down the other side of the hill, she was able to take in the fullness of valley ahead of her. The hill itself was covered in soft grass and small yellow and white flowers that sparkled like gold as the sun began to near the horizon. To her left and down the hill, small trees broke through the tall meadow grasses and gave way to a forest that got thicker and thicker the further back she peered. Nearer the base of the hill, a stream wound its way out of the woods, crossing the meadow and burbling its way down to the middle of the valley where it spilled into a wide lake. Across the lake was more forest, evergreens and spruce making their way into foothills and peaks that rose sharp like blades of grass. A soft breeze blew across the meadow Willowclaw stood in, tousling Willowclaw's coat and making her skin prickle. She stopped dead in her tracks at the sight of this place, it was breathtaking. "If ever there was a time for a sign, StarClan..." she began to mew, giddy with excitement and hope that this was finally the place she was meant to be. Before she could even finish her sentence, the breeze dropped a leaf on her head, the sign that leaf-fall was beginning to take hold. She shook it off, cursing it lightly before she looked again. It was the perfect shape of a star.

"Hmph" she giggled, "well, nothing to do about it then."

With a renewed vigor, she settled in to a hunt for dinner and a hunt for a camp for the night. Tomorrow, she would scout out her new home.
