To clarify the slot system with JBDs :
Normal users have 4 'normal' slots and 1 'nursery slot'
The 4 normal slot can be filled by any kind of bean at all (including nursery beans and orphans). The nursery slot can only be filled by a nursery bean or orphans.

I thought Hiccup had said (page 105) that it was just 5 total because the adopts had been closed

since it's 4 normal + 1 nursery, and the official adopts are closed, then it's plain 5, nursery or not

Since there's only the nursery open, it doesn't make any difference; you can own 5 beans, and almost all you can aquire right now are nursery beans.

The 4 normal slots, like I said, can be filled by any types of bean at all. It is perfectly fine to own 5 nursery beans.
