tongues of seafoam frolicked across a sun-bleached canvas of silken champagne, whose essence was withered away by the stroke of time and turned into little more than stardust with smatterings of celestial beings and hues of periwinkle lost in its starry orbit…or rather flowers and fleas lost at sea.

and despite herself, it wasn’t long until, she too, was among the embrace of the sea. its touch elegant and undulating beneath the delicate fluidity of movement.

and soon, the little bottle no longer scintillated beneath sunkissed waters. it was among silken champagne shores and smatterings of celestial beings and the flesh of her palm.

her touch was reverent, fleeting and momentary upon the little bottle’s cork before a pop reverbrated among the rise and fall of seafoam tongues. and within the bottle, a slip of gold-tipped paper unfurled, its effervescence almost luminous as it sank into her veins. into her very bones. a message.

yet not all secrets were the essence of sulfur and brimstone, a confession stripped from shadows and steel. nor were all secrets a poison, the hidden rot of an apple, a slow festering infection of the soul. but some secrets were honeycombs and daylight, a delight to ghost the lips of a trusted few. and to moongaze, her secret was exactly that. a dayspring, a new lily in a winter’s snap, a trove of forgotten treasure. a commitment to family and a promise between blood sisters.

and tonight, it seemed the stranger in the shadows also had a secret of her own.

“mei?” the stranger slipped from the snarl of shadows, starlight brilliant in the curve of her eyes. “stars, where have you been? i’ve been looking- oh.” a blush deepened on her cheeks, the rosy flush morphing into a bruised shade of indigo. “i didn’t mean- i’m so sorry. i’m looking for a friend of mine. she and i- well, we promised to meet here tonight.” (furzetuft needs help!)

“my name’s furzetuft.” the stranger gently tucked a curl from her eyes, the tremor of a smile on her lips. “i didn’t mean to startle you. please, take these━a boon from my travels.”

SoulShadow’s eyes narrowed as he watched the she-cat come out from the bushes. “Where did you come from?” He asks, not relaxing his body one hair. He was concerned this cat could be from the rogue group known as the Vikings. They had never encountered them before and she did not look like a rogue to him, but appearances can be deceiving. He had to protect MoonGaze, it was his duty. The Vikings were known to be ruthless; he had heard tales of them from the Tribe of Rushing Water. They had encountered them before, they always attacked at night when every cat was sleeping. The she-cat seemed very relaxed, and it confused him and before he knew it and could try to stop her, MoonGaze was walking around and towards the rogue to greet her.

“Hello!” MoonGaze mewed softly trying to keep the excitement out of her voice. It seems the conversation they were having prior to this encounter disappeared from her mind, no longer weighing on her. “Furztuft, do you remember me?” she asked. MoonGaze had encountered this cat before when she still lived with the tribe, though she was quite young. She remembered the she-cat visiting them and playing with all the kits. When she didn’t seem to recognize her, though MoonGaze hadn’t really expected her to, it had been more than a handful of moons since they had last seen each other, but she remembered that Furztuft had stayed with them for a short time. She had good memories of following the she-cat around with her sister in tow. MoonGaze quickly reminded the other she-cat of who she was and soon the pair were catching up. All the while, SoulShadow’s eyes were trained on the pair. He had relaxed a bit now. Clearly his clanmate knew this she-cat. While that gave him a small bit of comfort, he was still wary of the outsider, and he knew that he wouldn’t be able to fully relax until he was home and in his den.

The she-cats conversation quickly died off as they realized he was still there watching them. They both looked at him, MoonGaze quickly spoke, “We need to help her find her friend.” She told him, in a very matter-of-fact tone. SoulShadow’s eyes widened in surprise at her request.

“Do you not realize that the moon is still very high?” He questioned her. “It’s late, and don’t you think you have caused enough trouble tonight?” He watched her expression, but all he saw was clear determination. She was going to help this cat no matter what he said to try and convince her otherwise.

He sighed and grumbled a bit, “Fine. We can try and find her friend, but let’s try to make it quick, I had to get StormFrost to cover my shift. He is not going to be happy.” He noted Furztuft’s happy expression and her excitement at his agreement to attempt to find her friend. The group set off, the she-cat leading the way.

the grove of evergreen wept.
their tears citrine and sun-bleached as if it were remnants of king midas and his opulent touch. golden sap oozed from their gnarled skin, leeching over the silhouette of a heart sculpted into the terracotta of their ruined limbs. and encapsulated within each bead of sap, pallid wings sculpted of strands of gossamer and wilted bits of flora that had long since gone still… perfectly preserved within citrine walls speckled with fallen stardust.

zara whirled. “who are you?”
eyes of stardust and dappled slivers of daylight were upon hers, endlessly ethereal as they squinted. “well… i am furzetuft, of course! haven’t you heard of me?” the strange let loose a little huff. “by the way, you should stop being so cruel to your tree! poor things!” her dandelion and sepia curls bobbed as she shook her head. “anyway, could you spare some food or herbs… i could really use them.”

The soft, smooth voice like honey quickly grasped the attention of Envy, who gazed over her shoulder and lowered her paw from the tree she had just swiped at. She stared in silence for a moment, allowing Zara to swiftly interrogate the cat, and she would listen to the interaction. She wanted to gauge the openness of this cat prior to speaking herself - she needed to be a good representation of the Heart of Decay. Her mossy green and sun orange eyes would narrow at the request for aid as she gazed over the cat. She was a beautiful tortoiseshell molly, with a unique fang and vibrant gold eyes. She didn't look like she needed help - but as Envy has learned over the course of her life, appearances are certainly deceiving.

A soft exhale escaped Envy before she turned her body around, looking to Zara. The gray molly's fur was risen, her tail lashing in irritation, and what Envy perceived as fear. "Stand down, Zara. I don't think this molly means harm."

"But, Envy! She is an unknown cat within our borders. For all we know, she could be the one that's been stealing the herbs all over our territory! The borage flowers aren't the only instance." Zara huffed in frustration. "These herbs aren't always easy to find..." Zara went on to explain, her blue eyes meeting Envy. An irritated ear flick made Zara's gaze falter, and soon she sat on her haunches; to her, Envy's gaze was fear inducing. After getting Zara settled, Envy turned her focus back to Furzetuft.

"Furzetuft, you said? Well, I am guessing you are a nomad of sorts." Envy remarked, looking the molly up and down. "I apologize for harming the nature you seem to protect. I suppose I can see how it is disrespectful, but you must understand I am only doing my diligence as a leader and protecting my clan. Some of the cats within our borders who don't belong ignore scents, so the visual signs among these trees was the only course of action I could think of to aid in this problem."

Envy watched Furzetuft for a moment, trying to analyze what she may be thinking. The molly's gaze hadn't faltered, still expressing disgust at the action. It was her right; Envy hadn't thought of it as tainting the sacredness of nature. "Alright. Zara, what is it this molly needed?"

"She said any food or herb that we could spare." Zara replied quietly, avoiding Envy's gaze.

"I'm not mad at your, dear. I just didn't want our Furzetuft here to think we were violent." Envy remarked, tilting her head in the direction of Furzetuft as she spoke.

"In any case, the Heart of Decay helps anyone we can, even if they do not agree with how we approach things." Envy turned back towards the tree, making her way towards the base. She lifted up the large, rolled up leaf in her maw, and gently unraveled it on the ground. On the way back from the border patrol, a few bugs had caught her attention, and she had caught them on the way back, thinking they'd be good for the youth of the clan to play with.

She stared at the leaf for a moment before leaning down, her lips gently clasping around an oval shaped, iridescently green beetle - a scarab. Envy would slowly saunter towards Furzetuft, gently dropping the beetle at her paws.

"I'm sorry it's not something more tasty. And that we can't spare herbs. Our medicine cats are currently too occupied to go herb gathering themselves; this is all we can spare for you. I hope it is enough." Envy would step back, her gaze fixated on the molly as she awaited her response.

“hello to you as well!” curls of nectarine and earth bobbed as the stranger leaned in close to the apprentice, the fallen stars within her gaze almost luminescent beneath the evening lights. “come along! let’s look for benji.”

a drunken daze had bewitched the morning in a lavender haze, shades of verbena and indigo had saturated the sunset, soaking the lake with a silken luminescence that seemed almost like liquid watercolor. as if they were little suncatchers, scales caught the radiance of the fading sunset, becoming a thing of sheer opulence among the wilted flora scattered across the canyon.

“benji! benji?” the honeyed lilit of the furzetuft's voice had gone hoarse, morphing to something akin to a songbird rasp as she stumbled through the stretch of mire alongside the lake. “are you there?”

“f-f-furzetuft?” the guttural plea was barely tangible in the hush, ebbing out into absolute nothingness as bloodshot eyes, the color of vermillion skies and liquid hibiscus, shuttered open in the dark. “i-i’m here! i’m here! help… please!”
(oh no! it seems that the patrol has found furzetuft’s friend, benji! however, it seems like he is injured and needs 1 herb [any] from the patrol! does the patrol help or turn him down?”

each step tugged a frayed knot of memories loose, a string studded with stars and otherworldly things, a running thread with echoes from another life. a life not borne of clandestine meetings and stolen moments under the cloak of midnight, a life where she was not a bird with no song━a withering sack of feathers and flesh, unseen and unheard. unnoticed.

as if it knew her thoughts, the gnarled claws of a branch snagged the corner of her eye. brittle laughter caught in her chest as the branch eased aside with a saccharine tenderness as if it were tracing mock tears down her cheeks. (-5% health for moongaze [face wound]━she may continue patrolling without rest!)

“... i quite like him.” furzetuft’s voice bloomed with the tenor of a nightingale’s song, rich and melodious, effortlessly inviting. the curve of a smile started on her lips. “your friend, that is. soulshadow? he’s very thorough. killing two birds with one stone already.”

a spray of coffee and cream feathers freckled the mossy path as soulshadow’s form tore from the shadows. moonlight ghosted the small, plump creature held captive in his jaws. (+3fp quail) he nodded once over his shoulder. not to her, but… someone else.

“furzetuft!” the fragrance of herbal teas and vanilla leapt from the umbra. all at once, the stars seemed to breathe a sigh, smiling down upon the lost soul now found. the stranger’s braids hung loose, tiny snowdrop petals and vanilla sticks coming undone from her curls as she enveloped furzetuft in a tight embrace. (furzetuft’s friend found!)

in another life, perhaps the notes of her life would harmonize just like that. a life of early mornings and sweet nothings, a life where it was just her and her sister. together━

“hello? i… i’m really sorry to interrupt, but i wanted you to have this. i made it myself.” glass petals shimmered in the folds of the stranger’s paws, catching the starlight with a capricious wink. in a blink, the petals morphed, each delicate curl folding into each other in a loose spiral until a single water lily unfurled in her paws. tiny beads of water slid on the surface, trembling under the evening chill. “for keeping my dearest friend and my heart’s sister safe during her wanders.” (+1 star’s grace; npc task reward!)

and with a last parting embrace, the pair vanished to wander trails of stardust and liquid moonlight. (furzetuft & her friend have left; npc task completed!)

the fragrance of nectar and petrichor had tainted the earth, still brimming with autumnal rain and the lanquid spread of decay as winter begins to sink into the bones of reality. and amongst the november chill, a little moth with wings of auburn and tiger fur descended upon the spines of a thistle bush.

it didn’t take long for zara to swivel back to the stranger whose features had now crinkled with barely disguised disdain.

“hmm… i suppose that will have to do.” her eyes seemed almost opulent as the rosy swell of the stranger’s lips parted with a pout. “i guess i’m now obliged to give you something… aren’t i?” the honeyed drawl of her voice seemed almost petulant. “since you both are so generous… would you mind sparing a couple more things for me?”

Having eagerly been awaiting Furzetuft's response to the scarab, Envy watched her facial movements, noting a very subtle furrowing of the brow and purse of Furzetuft's lips, as though she were disappointed. Something in Envy grew to feel bad for the feline, but she kept it to herself -- she could not, however, say the same for Zara.

"For someone who is desperate, you sure do seem to be picky... You should appreciate whatever nature and life brings your way, especially for free." Zara remarked, suddenly yelping and crouching to the ground as Envy brought a paw to the back of her head in a brisk, corrective smack. Envy's orange and green gaze met Zara's eyes, silently apologizing.

"I, too, would not only want to be offered a bug, Zara." Envy explained, her voice soft as she tried to calm Zara down. Zara's tail lashed in irritation, but her eyes narrowed. She commended Envy's patience with even the ungrateful, and nodded her head in understanding.

"I apologize for my outburst, Furzetuft. I care deeply about nature and do not like cats being ungrateful for it, is all." Zara sighed, her risen fur still indicating she was on edge. "Envy, I'll take a look at the leaves. See what we can spare."

Envy would sit down before Furzetuft as Zara wandered behind her, comparing the leaves. "I also apologize on her behalf. Our medicine cats have been struggling a lot lately, with one dealing with her own personal trifles and the other not feeling comfortable traveling alone. We have often been spread thin on a variety of things." Envy elaborated, not expecting much of a response from Furzetuft. Her gaze would falter -- something about Furzetuft made her nervous; not in a bad way, though. Envy's ears then perked up when Zara yelled, beckoning her over.

"Come here, Envy." Envy would rise to her paws and turn quickly, moving towards Zara.

"What is it?"

"We... don't really have much to spare. Assuming Avia and Gale aren't able to patrol themselves for another couple of nights, this will barely tide us over for the day to day skirmishes of the novices and their trainers." Zara explained. Zara would carefully separate the cobwebs and death berries from the rest of their stash.

"Isn't it insulting to give a traveler death berries?" Envy inquired, her nose twitching as she gazed at the berries before her paws. These were berries that had suddenly brought the end to many cats in the world of the clans, and she was wary of even touching them.

"It is more insulting to not give them anything at all. I will explain our circumstances, and why we are giving them to her. It is up to her to decide how to perceive it from there. You grab the cobwebs, I know how to handle these." Envy gently grasped a bundle of cobwebs, moving towards Furzetuft and lowering the cobwebs to her paws. Zara would follow at her flank, having used a smaller leaf to coil around the death berries, making sure none of their fluid ended up within her maw.

"There is something I need to elaborate on about these berries, Furzetuft. I am not giving you these death berries to be insulting. It is genuinely all we can spare, given the situation within our clan. I know we started off poorly, and I apologize for my brashness and inconsideration. If we had more to spare, we certainly would. I hope you can take this as a good offer from us." Zara said before carefully placing the leaf with death berries atop the roll of cobwebs.
