Even though I think five is enough beans, as I said earlier, I need to say, not being able to give the different beans enough love has nothing to do with it.
Maybe if you had over ten beans you couldn't /constantly/ be paying attention to every single one, but beans are not easy to win, you try for ones you love and have to love them dearly and try hard to win. Especially with nb contests, which tend to be long form since they are run by individual users who want their bean's baby to go to the best user possible.
Yes, maybe the community doesn't really need a slot bump.. but whether users care for their beans enough is not significant enough for 6 or 7 bean limit.
Some people win a single bean, their one and only bean, say by luck or in an easier contest, and never once roleplay it, or post it's name again after winning it.
Some people have won extra slots, or are part of staff, and have many beans, which they care for and develop equally.
Whether people can give enough attention to the bean depends on the person, and if they can not, that is for the judge of their beans to decide, before they aware them a JBD.
