inactive users

Postby casket » Mon Sep 15, 2025 10:01 am

hello! so i have noticed recently that there is a lot of old users that joined really early on, and then never touched their accounts again. in my opinion, after being inactive for 10+ years i feel as though the accounts should get removed, and the pets should go to the pound where they can be loved or traded once again. that way usernames aren’t being taken by inactive users, and pets can go back into recurculation.

as it stands right now, as long as they have a single pet then the account stays forever and nothing is done about it because they “might come back some day”. i believe that accounts that haven’t been touched in 5, 10 years should get an email warning them about inactivity, and if they still don’t log in within a certain period of time, then everything gets put back into circulation. it just doesn’t make much sense to keep old unused accounts around when that contributes to pet worths skyrocketing

Pretty sure CS has a thing against removing pets from old accounts. I've seen many who returned after over a decade

I have said before though that if users were given the option that should they dissapear for a decade or something and they allow the pets to be sent to the pound. like i would actually do that

Edit: sorry if what i wrote might be confusing, i wrote this when i had just woken up. Here let me say it more clearly

Basically, CS has this very strong stance that they would never remove pets from accounts or put them into the pound, unless things like a ban occoured. yes it is very unlikely and most don't return to their accounts after such extended periods of time, i agree with that. Maybe a way to solve this going foward is to give users an option that if they were to be inactive for a long period of time, they consent to having their pets placed into the pound. i personally would keep that setting on, so that my pets can be allowed to once again create the same joy that i currently feel keeping/getting them.

while it's true that even accounts left dormant for years and years do become active again sometimes, i think the email system proposed here would be a good way to make things more fair for everyone involved. i think ten years is a better amount of time, just because it gives someone more time to come back, and also pets that are ten+ years old VS five years old... i would say there's a meaningful discrepancy in general worth :^P. i feel like if someone received an email such as this, it would be easy for someone who doesn't want to lose the account, but doesn't want to become active again, to log on just the once to re-set the 'timer'. i also feel that if someone isn't using the email they signed up with, and haven't been playing for 10+ years, it's (to me) unlikely that they will notice or care (for want of more delicate wording >_>).
i think having a 'grace period' of somewhere between 1-3 months would also be good, just in case someone needs some time before they can get to handling the fate of their decade-old cs account ^_^

Add the email onto my idea, and also maybe instead of reseting a timer it can just be an option, so those that dont want to lose their pets can leave it unchecked and it stays forever.

This way, accounts that truly aren’t returning after many years could be freed up, while anyone who still cares about their pets can keep them without worrying about a timer running out.

Support but not only for the pets, but to open up usernames.

For example, I want the username "Amadeus" but it is taken by a user who has 83 pets, but registered October 3rd 2009, and last logged in October 4th 2009. They're been inactive for almost 16 years but I am not allowed to have the username because the account has pets on it.

At least if not removing the pets... reset the username to like their user ID or something so if by chance they ever log in again, they'll be prompted to choose a new username.

We don't know what happens in people's lives. I am a returning player as of last year, and I was away for 11. I would have been absolutely livid to come back and find out my things had been taken just because I was gone. I joined this game when I was in middle school and forgot about it due to the pressures of high school, but I was still able to come back and pick up where I left off over ten hears later. While an email reminder, something along the lines of 'it's been ages since we saw you' may not be a mad idea, I know people who don't return because they no longer have access to the email used to join. What if people had joined using a parents email that, again, is no longer available? What if they no longer check it due to spam? I saw one user who had 'rest in peace' for another user in their bio; you really want to put the beloved pets of a dead player back in circulation just because you want them? Things happen and life changes in the blink of an eye. It's unfortunate that some old pets remain in high demand and uncirculated because of it, but it's not the fault of the missing player.

And to 'remove the username and put it back in circulation' is also to remove who those people were when they played, and to make it harder for those who did play and know them to find them again. When I find a website where a 'KelpieMomma' already exists, I don't go looking for their username, I change mine a little to make it work.

Leave old, untouched accounts alone. You don't know the reason behind why they've been left.

I'm a user who came back over 10 years later. I'm so grateful to still have all my pets and all of the things I left. You never truly know what's going on with someone's life. Wanting to ban an account or deactivate it because you want a username is such a wild thing to even think about. People come back to their accounts, and they shouldn't have to worry about if it'll actually be there when it comes back because someone wanted to be xyz123.

i think an important variable in this is how active the player was WHEN they were actually signing on. so, if an account signed on once, adopted a pet, and never signed on again, its safe to say they probably arent coming back. but if a player has like--- lots of pets, lots of posts, but hasnt been online since 2010, then theres a higher chance theyd come back + miss what theyd loss. maybe there can be a certain qualifier, like if the player has more than 50 or 100 or whatever number of posts, then their account wont be deleted. same with pet count. i understand the username thing WHOLEHEARTEDLY bc why are all the good ones always taken </3 and plenty of times i find a username i want on an account with 3 pets that signed on once back in 2009.

Staff have already shut down all ideas of doing this and tbh I don't blame them. You have to remember that some of the accounts technically can have thousands of dollars worth of pets in them. If I left the site for 10 years and came back to nothing and then told staff they need to put everything back they would have to either create the pets from thin air (they said they will never do this) or reverse all the trades they did with my pets causing an absolute insane snowball effect. It's not worth risking at all and I kind of agree with them not wanting to do it

Edit: I wanted to add this is coming from someone who was effected and reverse traded after the big password leak a couple years ago. They had to undo every single trade done with those pets/c$ and people ended up going completely negative c$ or losing the dreamy they just achieved.
