C4C THREAD ENTRY
image linkI made a monster lady, she’s a kelpie and they’re actually so cool :)
Kelpies are humanoid/horse shapeshifter creatures from Irish/Scottish mythology. Their hair is sticky so when people touch it they get stuck and get pulled underwater to their doooooom, pretty cool.
I had so much fun making her that I made her a moodboard!

Here are some other versions:

She was once a normal girl in a Slavic village a few hundred years ago. She was beautiful and radiated warmth and light, everyone loved her. One night during a festival,
Kupala Night, she was chosen for an important role in a ceremony. The role had always been given to the village’s resident witch as a courtesy for her services to the village during the year, but the girl’s beauty and vivacity could not be ignored so the role went to her. Unknown to everyone this sealed her doomed fate. When the witch realized she was replaced she stormed into the raging fire in the center of the dance circle and laid a curse on the poor forsaken girl. Sentenced to a life in the watery depths, slowly and painfully losing her memories, becoming a hunter of those she once loved. Once the curse was spoken she could feel gills ripping open on her neck, suddenly she couldn’t breath. Instinctively with an instinct never known to her before she ran through the forest to the lake’s edge and dove in headfirst. She has never come out since.
The villagers fenced off access to the lake so no one would fall prey to the kelpie now bound there by powers beyond mortal control. Although immortal, a kelpie must eat so she kept herself alive for many years on deer and small animals that made their way to the lake to quench their thirst. Years after she leapt into the lake all of her memories were completely gone, in her mind she had always been a monster and the water has always been her home. About 20 years after that fateful Kupala Night an elderly man came to the lake and satiated the beast’s hunger for many moons.
Another 20 years passed and a strong warrior entered the kelpie’s home. 20 years after that a young girl. The kelpie came to expect a filling meal every two decades and waited restlessly for the full moon night to come.
Because the girl was once so loved by the whole village when her parents passed away 20 years after the curse was placed a lottery was created to sacrifice one soul to feed the poor wretched creature that haunted their consciences. Every 20 years on a full moon a set of numbers was drawn from a dusty box kept in the rafters of the village hall. The unlucky person who matched those numbers said goodbye to their loved ones and made the solemn walk to the water, resigned to their duty.
That is the tale that is told to all young children who grow up in the ancient village when they reach the age of 7. This is what happened for centuries until one little child began to study magic.
