tier 1 training (just for fun)
she's wild and strong. she's whale-eyed, body posture all but screaming "stay away or i'll bite". she squats in the far corner of her quarantine kennel, legs shaking and ears airplaned. her pink tongue runs over her pink nose and her lips nervously. her lips pull back into a snarl when i make brief eye contact.
this one, my first echobi, as beautiful as she is feral, growls every time i adjust my posture to make myself comfortable on the cold concrete floor. she won't even go near her bed and food dish. they're foreign to her, terrible and scary things. her eyes follow me as i get up to leave, latching the gate behind me. the rest of her body doesn't move.
the next week is more of the same. she won't take food out of her bowl but eats it in the bushes in her run outside. and she almost swallows it whole, barely stopping to chew, she's so nervous. but at least she's eating. and she's happy outside, her nerves relaxing when she runs back and forth, back and forth, releasing her pent up anxiety and energy. on the first day of the second week, i throw a ball and she chases it. when she smells me on it she takes a minute to sniff at it with her ears pointed forward curiously. she turns and leaves it there, but when she sees me she doesn't growl or raise her hackles. she just slinks past me and back into her kennel.
it's progress.
nearing the end of the second week, she greets me with a tail sway, extending her neck to sniff my shirt. i'm carrying her food dish and when she smells it her tail begins wagging. she licks her chops hungrily and stands up on her hind legs towering over me as if she's about ready to eat out of her dish in my hands. i set it down and give her a tentative pat on her shoulder. she's too busy eating to react either way, but she doesn't flinch or snarl. i pause, taken aback. her dark fur is silky soft, warm from the morning sun where she'd been basking outside minutes before. my hand smells like grass and dirt and dusty fur. it's a pleasant aroma. i smile as i leave her to eat in her kennel.
