Goennec Pen #: 1

Name: Admiral
How would you use him/her: To draw and wite about, maybe even enter him in the RP. As with Mercury, he would be a very dear character, and who knows if he's not going to me a headmate too?
Define your Goennec:
Imagine if you were captured.
Not just captured behind a fence in a small enclosure. No, think of it as if you were in the middle of your country, and the countrys borders were the fence. Do you think you would try to escape? The automatic answer to that is, of course, yes because we all value freedom.
But what if you didn't even discover the fence? If the fence went beyond were you would travel, chances are unlikely. Unless, of course you were curious...
And since the quarrel
Will bear no color for the thing he is,
Fashion it thus: that what he is, augmented,
Would run to these and these extremities;
And therefore think him as a serpent's egg,
Which, hatch'd, would as his kind grow mischievous,
And kill him in the shell
Many goennecs are born each year. some are named by their parents, others by their prime, and some even by themselves as a ritual of growing up.
Nothing of that happened to Admiral.
Admiral was named by other creatures, the creatures that sometime came during winter, and talked a strange language of weird syllables. The humans.
It all happened a winter morning. Admiral and his best friend, Sofus, were out playing in the newly fallen snow. They were both still young, around 1 year of age, and enjoyed playing around without their parents and herdmates watching over them.
Now, they were not in danger of being killed by predators, for all of those had slowly disappeared from the territory within the last 10 years. Why? No one knew, the herd was so happy to be able to live in safety, that they didn't bother trying to find out. What ever it was, it was outside their territory and left them alone, so why should they care?
Even in the harshest of winters months the herd was safe. The humans visited each winter, and fed them if there was a shortage of food. Still, the odd two-legged creatures made the goennecs wary, so they kept their distance. But this winter morning, Sofus and Admiral were about to expirience what would later be known in the herd as 'The Naming'.
As the two youngsters started a game of 'who-can-pile-most-snow-onto-eachother', a couple of humans in a transporting device* stopped nearby. Admiral and Sofus were too occupied with their game to notice, and the humans, spotting a great chance, got out of the device and slowly creeped closer.
Just as Admiral had completely buried Sofus' behind half in snow, and stood proudly awaiting his friend to break free, there it was. The sounds of human speech, the gruff voices were low, but they were instantly heard by the two.
"Haha, look at the golden fawn, he is like the old admiral."The other human nodded and said some words in agreement, while pointing at Admiral. The two youngsters were absolutely stunned. Admiral immidiately digged Sofus out, and the two took off in a crazed sprint towards the herd. They heard the speech of the humans as they ran.
"Oh look Niels, the admiral helped his comrade free""haha, he certainly derserves that name, goodbye for now Admiral!"Admiral looked back for a few seconds, and saw the oddest thing; the humans waving at him.
When they returned, they immidiately told about the strange happening. The adults were not alarmed, in fact they seemes to find it amazing that Admiral had been 'chosen' to be named by the humans. He was no longer 'just that kid', but 'The Named One', and he definetely enjoyed this status. The only thing keeping him down to earth was his friend Sofus.
But all good things must have an end.
*: Transport device is just a car of some sort, no need to be alarmed, this isn't science fiction X3I do repent; but heaven hath pleas'd it so
To punish me with this, and this with me,
That I must be their scourge and minister.
I will bestow him, and will answer well
The death I gave him. So again good night.
I must be cruel only to be kind.
Thus bad begins and worse remains behind
The years went by quickly.
Each day seemed the same to Admiral; he got up, wandered around aimlessly, was spoiled by the herdmates, and hung around with Sofus.
Few traditions and ranks were kept in the herd, there were no soliders, no peasants, no prince and no prime, because they no longer had a reason or objective to be kept. The only tradition kept, was the task of just checking up on the territory borders, it was taken upon lightly, and often done in a hurry. The task of doing this rotated between the herd members around each fullmoon. This moon it was Sofus' turn.
His rounds started taking longer and longer time, and on the night of the halfmoon; he was gone. No one knew what happened to him, and Admiral got mad. He thought that Sofus had left because he was jealous of Admiral's status in the herd, and used the fact that the recent days Sofus had been very distanced as proof.
Eventually the event faded in to oblivion, but during that time Admiral became more and more arrogant not to mention he gained a position in the herd, which allowed him to be worshipped as a king.
Then a year later a strange goennec came stumpeling into the herd's gathering places. He was thin and ragged, not a single piece of fat on his body, which was very disturbing as it was winter. His coat was a desaturated red and a dirty white, and it hung in long straggled strands. But the most disturbing thing was his smile as he stumpled into the place.
Whispers broke out among the herd members. Some of the does dragged the fawns into hiding, and everyone else seemed to be absolutely terrified of the pathetic-looking stranger.
After a few moments of tense silence, the stranger started moving. His green-gray eyes were filled with kindness as he approached Admiral and a small clutter of other stags. Admiral had rose, and stood now in a improvised fighting position, one of those that anyone who had been into a serious fight would laugh at.
"Admiral!"
Admiral froze as the stranger spoke, his eyes widening. His eyes darted to his sides to check on the other stags, all three were slowly backing away, clearly horrified that the stranger knew the name. The stranger staggered towards Admiral agian, stopping a meter or so from him. The three other stags quickly got out of the way, and rahn to the sides of their mates and family. The herd watched silently, expecting a response.
"What's wrong? Have you gone mute with sorrow? Or is it just happiness?"
The stranger grinned wide and sat down with a sigh.
"S-s-sofus? Really?"
"Do I really look THAT different?"
Admiral nodded feebly, and Sofus just grinned agian. It looked like a warm renuinion, but only for a few moments. Admiral remembered the night and days after the dissapearance of Sofus, and anger started to boil within him, but before he got a chance to say or do anything, Sofus spoke again this time to the herd.
"Now, I didn't return just to say hi. No, I have far more important things to tell."
He rose again, facing the herd to capture their attention further.
"I have some bad news and some good news. The bad news are that you are captu- no,
imprisoned here by the humans. Now, this may not sound like a bad thing, but trust me, it is. I've tasted the freedom on the other side of the fences that sorround this place, and what've seen is to great for words" He took a deep breath,as if he was taking in some of the freedom mentioned.
"The good news are, I found a way out. Beyond the western border is a hole in the fence, just big enough for me to fit, but I'm sure we can make it bigger so even Admiral could get through. That way out is our ticket to freedom!"
Sofus looked satisfied at the crowd, but his smile faded as he saw the faces of his former herdmates. They went from surprised to horryfied, from confused to raging.
The silence lasted for a few seconds, then an old stag came forward, his teeth showing in a defensive growl.
"He's mad!" The stag declared and prepared to charge, making the most of the herd follow his example. The fear was clear in the wide eyes of Sofus as he saw his former herdmates turn agianst him. He backed slowly, eyes darting to the sides, searching for any help. Soon his hind-quaters bumped into a tree, and he was caught.
The only not standing in either fear or preparing to attack, was Admiral. The fear that Sofus felt was reflected in the eyes of the palomino stag as he saw sofus get hit, and fall to the ground. admiral was absolutely paralyzed, he did not what to do, but somehow his sympathy won him over, and he rushed to the defence of Sofus.
Now standing nervously between the hedr ans Sofus, was Admiral. The attackers were looking curiosly at him, as if they expected him to make a move, while Sofus was looking up at him with a nervous smile. Admiral could feel the resolve weighing heavily on his shoulders, what now? Was he supposed to tell his herdmates off and follow the weird directions of Sofus? Or should he attack the poor fellow? Though it was a horrible answer, it could help demonstrate his power, but still... He looked at Sofus, sadness in his eyes.
"What now, sir?"
Admiral looked at the old stag who asked the question. He was just about to tell him that Sofus hadn't done anything wrong, but hesitated. He looked from Sofus to the masses and back again, suddenly the choice was in his head. Admiral stepped, legs shaking a bit, forward causing the mass to back off. He took one last look at Sofus and started to talk.
"Look at him. Look at him, he's crazy! H-h-have you ever heard of sucha thing as 'fences'? N-no it mu-ust be a product of his mind, yes, yes his mind. It. It would be dangerous for both us and him to keep..."
His quick and hesitant speech trailed off as he looked Sofus into the eyes. Eyes that were filled with pain and misery. Admiral quickly turned his head away, and made some stuttering sounds before being able to speak again.
"To keep him here.. No. No it would not be good, even if we traveled. He, he, he must be... Must be... Banished. Yes, banished"
Admiral did not even dare to look at Sofus, the hurt was thick in the air around him. He did not dare to turn before the sounds of Sofus' limping gait was gone.
Guilt started to toture him constantly during the next weeks. Though the herd seemed very satisfied, just the look of them made him remember that day. It was such a plauge, that a few days later he ran off.
He never saw the herd nor Sofus again.
Now go we in content
To liberty, and not to banishment
Admiral was not fit for the life outside the herd. His first encounter with a predator left him absolutely terrified, and he continued to wander, or rather flee from whatever he thought was following at that time. For months he didn' see any other soul, and even in some way convinced himself he was dead. The brutal reality of the wilds hardened his mind, and he started to act more on instinct than on thought.
One day he saw something in the distance. Something that filled him with fear and hope at the same time.
The silhouet of a goennec.
He broke into a run, but stopped suddenly. Was this really a wise thing to do? Memories of the past months flew through his mind in a flash, this was a place where the fittest survived, there was no mercy, no sympathy. Who knew what the stranger would do to him? Another fear showed itself in his mind, what if it was Sofus trying to get his revenge?
It looked like the rational part of his mind would win and keep him from approaching, but then the stranger dissapeared. Some long-forgotten reckless curiosity came up in him, and Admiral ran after the stranger.
The run was long, and hard, the stranger seeming to keep the same distance all the time. Admirals joints started to ache, then his lungs felt like lead and lastly his sight started being cloudy.
So I'll run myself to death? What a fitting end for a beast like me... He was to busy talking to himself and thinking about death, that he didn't notice the stranger stopping. Stumpeling over his own legs and falling quite a distance, Admiral stopped in front of the stranger, who was not alone anymore.
Panting heavily, Admiral lay for the feet of three strangers; two does and a stag. They were eyeing him curiously, the doe with blue specks on her fur was grinning widely. Next to her stood the other doe, she had a red pelt with small delicate golden markings, and far to the right stood a small, but very muscular, stag with blue and orange markings.
"Welcome to the army youngster"
What before was fear, turned to anger for Admiral.
"What the heck is 'the army', it sounds like something a mad-person would say"
The three strangers exchanged confused glances. The red doe stepped forward, her voice was rough and ragged.
"Wait, if you don't know what the army is, then why did you search for us?"
"Search for you? Why whould I search for a small herd of apparently crazy strangers?!"
"Oh great Prauh, your new recruit seems to be 'special', isn't that just
wonderful?"
The orange and blue stag, who was addressed as Prauh, looked closely at Admiral
"maybe he's just a tame? Look"
He carefully prodded Admirals legs
"Almost no muscle tissue, looks like he's been living the easy life until now..."
The speckled doe nodded
"But why did he escape if that's the case?"
"Maybe he was just one of those who love freedom?"
Prauh turned his attention back to Admiral
"How did you even escape? weren't you fenced?"
"Fenced? I was right about you before, there aren't such things as 'fences'"
"what? Of course there is, if you're a prevoius tame you must've been fenced in, how did you escape?"
"Again with the fences! I just went right through them, seriously they're just a product of your miiinds, no need to be so alarmed"
The red doe snarled and turned to Prauh agian.
"He is definetely not normal, we sholdn't let him be let into the army"
The speckled doe stomped and shook her head in annoyance.
"That is the second time you've said that Bold, I think we get it, you hate him. Poor fellow, being judged sooo unfairly by a stranger"
Her voice was almost a snarl, but the moment she finished speaking, she grinned at Admiral. Prauh came in between the two snarling does and calmed them down before they jumped at eachother, wether it would be a serious fight or not Admiral couldn't tell, the three had already confused him enough for his taste.
The army did eventually win him over, their ranks were very temping for him, and soon he found himself traing to fight for their 'noble' cause of helping those who ask, of course with physical voilence.
And Caesar's spirit, raging for revenge,
With Ate by his side come hot from hell,
Shall in these confines with a monarch's voice
Cry "Havoc!" and let slip the dogs of war,
That this foul deed shall smell above the earth
With carrion men, groaning for burial.
His time in the army training developed a very good sense of strategy, both figuring out the opponents and counter-strategies, and being very cool even in the midst of a hefty battle. Though he did not experience any at this point, he quickly rose to the rank of general.
Being a general came him the command of a troop of 15; 10 regulars, 3 soliders and 1 second-in-command, who would assist him if battle came.
And it did.
A month after his promotion to general, Bold called a meeting and annouced that a battle was coming. The battle was to take place a days journey from where they were at that point, and would be against a herd of young males, who'd been making trouble lately in sorrounding herds, attacking and sometimes taking does for a harem. Some stags and does had already been killed in the attempt to struggle.
Of course this was of no importance to the army, they didn't care if 4 or so strangers died, they only knew that these rouges were the enemy, and so they had to put them down. Though what they failed to notcie, was that the planned battle was only able because an unknown messenger had brought the information from one herd to another, and she did not speak the truth.
On the day of the battle, the two armies met up on a nice flat plain, as it was agreed upon. They took some time sizing eachother up, and the awaited the attack. Bold was commanding that day, and she knew better than to rush into battle first, but apparently so did the enemy.
They stood for a while, glaring at eachother. There was no doubt that the army had met a wise opponent, not the ramshackle rouge band the messenger had told them they were fighting. In truth they were actually pitted against some of the relatives and survivors of previous army-battles, and their grudge was deep.
Bold called Prauh and Nia, and started discussing the matters at hand. In the end it let to the descision that would destroy the army, forever. Soon the three leaders slit again, and Bold took command agian.
"Troop 5, you charge along with troop 1, I want you to keep back General Admiral, I need you abilities now, this will be a long battle."
The two groups merged, and charged. The nemy didn't swish their tails as they saw the two troops coming, and few seconsds later it was evident why.
Where there before had been sand and dirt under the hooves and paws of the attackers, were now several deep and large holes, capturing the legs of thos unfortunate enough to step onto one, and send them down into the dirt. Due to the speed of the charge, what might've sound like a very pathetic attempt at a trap, broke the legs of many.
Now the enemy charged, their horns shimmering in the harsh midday sun. Some attacked those stuck in the traps, others went right for the army.
"Prauh! Nia! Take your regiments out now!" Bold yell was almost dwarfed by the sound of fast approaching sounds og hooves and paws against the sand. An eerie cracking sound filled the air as the two armies crashed together. Admiral kept back with Bold, his expression not changed a tad, even when the cries of the wounded and dying were heard.
He took everything in, it was an unfair battle, and the army were not in favor. Scanning the area, he whispered instructions and predictions to Bold, who got orders out to the fighting.
With the help of Admirals formidable strategy, favor semmed to turn slowly, but losses were huge. The opponent did not spare those who asked for mercy, and at some point even he would have to join in the battle itself.
The decision to invovle two of the three leaders was not a good idea. Though they were powerfull, they quickly got sperated from their troops.
Prauh was the first to fall. He was gathering a small troop to try and take down what seemed the commander, their attempt to sneak around was quickly discovered, and the troop was scattered. Leaving Prauh to fend for himself, though he was not an easy opponent, he wasn't invicible either, and he soon met his end. Shortly later Nia fell trying to defend a group of inexpirienced regulars.
"We'll need to go in General, I hope you're ready for this..."
Bolds voice was shaking, she was very shaken by the death of her two comrades, not to mention many of her own students. Admiral nodded, and with Bold at his side they rushed into the battle.
The nemy were slowly retreating, and the battle appeared to be won soon.
"General, go help what's left of your troop, I'll take care of the rest"
Bold sounded very tired, but if she was she definetely didn't let it show. Her face was drawn back in a growl, and her small horns were covered in blood. Not a single pant escaped her as she leapt into action.
Finally the nightmare was over, the enemy was gone. Bodies littered the earth and blood dyed the sand red. The army was in a sorry state, their losses had been great, and as it looked now only 30 had survived. Admiral was lucky to only have his shoulder injured, many of the survivors had injuries that would never heal.
Admiral did not care for the other in the army, right now he only cared if his commander was still alive. He hurried around the battle field, checking for the distinctive red and golden body. He found her finally. She was standing, but shaking and bleeding violently. He sighed with releif, the army was not gone after all, but gasped as he saw her collapse.
He made it before she passed on, and stood stunned looking at what he had bfore believed to be an invicible creature. But of course no one is invincible, death must come to all, even the greatest of warriors. He stood speechless ad he saw her stop breathing and silently pass on.
"So this is it? We have lost all our leaders, our comrades and what now? Is the army gone? Will we no longer exist? No. that can't happen... I. Yes, I will lead the army from now on"
Admiral helped the remains of the army, taht was now his army, away. They accepted his leadership without question, for they were terrified of the future, and at least Admiral was someone they knew.
To die is to be a counterfeit, for he is but the counterfeit of
a man who hath not the life of a man; but to counterfeit dying,
when a man thereby liveth, is to be no counterfeit, but the true
and perfect image of life indeed. The better part of valor is
discretion, in the which better part I have sav'd my life.
Admiral worked on recreating the army from the moment he was in command. Over the next 4 years he managed to not only defeat a whole lot of enemies while being outnumbered using his strategy, but also recruited around 40 more soliders.
Though the original 'noble' purpose of the army was not really existant anymore. Now they were more like a buch of nomads going where they please, and destroying all opposing forces. even if they still occansionally immobilized some tyranning herds, the army started a regime of terror, which mostly consisted of ruling over several herds and not being a part of any.
They did meet much opposition to their ways of multi-ruling and terror, though the most noteable was the herd of Slevig, who succesfully stopped them once or twice from taking over a herd. Admiral did not regard them as a great threat, and assured the army that they were unstoppable. Even if he ruled with an iron hoof, he was respected by his troops and they believed everything he said and obeyed orders without any second thoughts.
Some say this was what led to his destruction.
One September morning while traveling, the army met Slevig himself, blocking the road. His eyes were resolute, and he stood his ground, even as the army started getting worked up and ready for charge. Admiral stopped them and walked forward to meet the enemy.
"What do you want, enemy?"
"Pleased to meet you too Admiral. I am here to inform you that your behavior will no longer be tolerated, this is the last chance you have to remove yourself from these lands, before we attack"
"you heard that troops? The pacifist wants us to spare his pathetic little band"
"I'm warning you Admiral, this is for your own good, for the good of your troops. We will attack if you stray further into the territories of the plains"
"Attack then! Attack with all you've got! But be warned, we will not spare any of you half-bloods"
"So it is then, this is your own fault"
Slevigs voice was icy was he turned and ran.
The following day, the two armies met eachother. The odds were painfully clear, there was no way the army was going to win, even with the master strategies of Admiral. He looked at the massive force, and simply turned and ran. He had saved himself, but not his troops as they were mercilessly attacked, though they were quick to surrender with their leader gone.
Admiral did not feel any sympathy, only fear for the revenge....
Blow, blow, thou winter wind,
Thou art not so unkind
As man's ingratitude
The young goennec, once unsecure in the banishment of his friend, who turned to one of the most genious strategics in goey history, ended up fleeing. He felt defeated, with no army, no safety or confidence in his steps, and a flickering mind like a dying flame. His eyes, once ruthless, darted to all sides as he rushed his way from the crime scene. Paranoia made its way into him as he ran, and he felt his skin prickeling with an odd cold. So that was show it felt to be chased, to be sought in a way that would only bring him pain if he was found.
Some say a the story ends here, but this is far from over.
Even with a shattered mind and suspicions haunting him, he had an ambition. Not only to keep himself safe, but to regain his former glory.
I need a fellowship. No, an army...And with that thought he fled, though with his head high and his chest puffed out. Keeping his fears behind a
fence.
But who knows if there's a hole in that fence? What if the hole grew? What if his fears were let out?

Admiral just before his last battle(transparency FAIL xD)
