The first time they encountered one of the large ones, they could not do more than shake in the corner, eyes wide, breath coming too fast. The cat had extended a curled paw, nearly tipping them over with no effort. As the cream cat's nose came close, too close for comfort, they froze, still as stone.
The cat chattered, flicking an ear, and their heart endeavoring to escape their rib cage. Another noise, and another moment of sheer panic.
With a tilt of its head, the cat's long fur fell into its face, and it chitters again. But this time, it spoke.
"What are you so afraid of, little one?" it said, with a soft, lilting voice.
They looked up, hopeful but still tense. There were stories, of the ones who could decimate a colony, but chose to befriend them instead. But they had believed they were just that, as what predator would refuse the food right in front of them?
The cat opened an eye, the iris an eerie shape, and spoke once more.
"I can feel your magic, little one. No harm will come to you."
With that, they forced themself to take a small step towards the cat. Perhaps it was foolish to trust someone who could so easily injure them, but they couldn't resist.
