Did you know that October is bat appreciation month in the US? Bats do a LOT of good for us! Insect-eating bats save farmers an estimated MILLIONS of dollars every year by preventing pest-related damages to crops, and fruit bats are great mammalian pollinators! Unfortunately, because of the stigma surrounding bats, they've been labeled as disease-ridden and mean creatures when it simply isn't the case. Less than 1% of bats carry rabies, and even then, they're more likely to pass away quickly than to spread it to humans.
A lot of bat species are threatened by White Nose Syndrome, which is a deadly fungus that thrives during the winter months and grows on the bat as it hibernates. It's extremely serious for most bats and can result in death. Organizations like Bat Conservation International have been granted funds to research this condition and develop preventative and treatment medicines to kill the fungus!
That's why conservation is so important. We NEED bats to survive. They're our friends, and they deserve better. If you send me proof of donation to any official bat conservation, I'll do an art request for you in full flatcolor!
