Ceto, The Primordial Sea Godess

Ceto in ancient Greek mythology is a primordial sea goddess. She as a goddess of the sea, she was believed to have been responsible for 'sea monsters' such as sharks, whales, and dolphins. Ceto has two main epithets, Ceto Crataeis meaning 'mighty' and Ceto Trienus meaning 'within three years'. Although not an epithet, she is often referred to as a 'sea monster'. This is believed to be because the name Ceto is derived from the ancient Greek work 'Κητώ' (pronounced Keto) which means sea monster. Interestingly enough, the infraorder for mammals such as whales and dolphins is 'Cetacea' which stems from this word. Her parents are generally considered to be Gaia and Pontus, the titans of the earth and the sea respectively. With her brother Phorcys, (another primordial sea god, responsible for all the things hidden in the sea that plague sailors.) had serveral children (this happened a lot in ancient Greece you kinda just have to look past it) including the Graeae Triplets (The Grey Ones, or The Grey Sisters) who are the embodiment of sea foam and are the 'keeper of a secret' who share one eyes and one tooth between them. Skylla, a sea monster with twelve feet, six heads, and three rows of sharp teeth who lurks in a narrow straight opposite Charybdis. A one eyed serpent named Landon. The 'Mother of Monsters' Echidna. And perhaps most famously, the gorgon sisters Stheno, Euryale, and Medusa. Who possessed hair made of snakes and whose gaze could turn someone to stone. Ceto is an interesting piece of the puzzle that is Greek mythology and I find that very interesting :]
