Do They Like the Ocean? Why/Why Not?:
She has a complex attitude towards the ocean. She loathes it-- but being a spirit of the ocean, she feels a sort of binding to the sea.
It calls to her-- lulls her into it's depths with the gentle crash of it's waves.
And it draws her under, filling her lungs with it's salty spray-- trying to reclaim it's lost property.
She's almost died. Seven-- now eight times.
Yet she keeps going back...
...For she's the daughter of the sea itself.
Or so her parents have claimed-- playfully of course.
Her father was a marine biologist, bright eyed and curious, a dreamer; always diving deep into the depths to study the marina,
and the fauna that live within it.
A man who gave up his simple city life to pursue what he loved the most.
Her mother was just a simple girl, born and raised by the oceanside,
Her home, a tiny house on an obscure island far off the coast, far from kalon touch,
her only neighbors, the inhabitants of the tide-pools that formed along the shore.
She sold seashells on the mainland; and the adornments she made of them;
Her coral pieces were objects of beauty for sure--
catching the eye of the finest of collectors,
And the heart of the marine biologist.
Young Lorelei was raised by the sea itself, they said,
as her father showed her all of the hidden coves,
how to dive without catching the bends,
and how to spot sea turtle eggs buried beneath the sand,
and her mother taught how to pick the pearls from shucked oysters,
and how to weave crowns out of the seaweed.
The two instilled within her a deep love for the ocean, and all within it,
"Their little mermaid" they affectionately called her,
picking her up by the scruff to whisk her away from the ocean's waves
after a long day of play,
before the tide would raise, as it so often does in the evening.
As easily as the ocean breathed life into the family, it had also taken it away,
like the pull of the waves as it draws back silt after lapping at the coast.
The mother and father were ended by the hand of what they loved the most one unfortunate, stormy evening,
orphaning young Lorelei,
leaving her to fend for her life,
as the ocean pulled the two into it's depths,
to keep them for itself.
They say the ocean will often reclaim those born from the foam of it's waves,
Those who sport an intense love for the sea,
and those who may find themselves drawn to the seaside
may be one of them--
and that their inclination towards it is them hearing it's gentle call to them,
from deep within their subconscious.
But again, that's only hearsay,
and what they whisper when they see her walk past,
on her trips to the mainland.
The girl of the waves-- the ocean spirit
who cheated death.
