Name Adam Rosalind RotheraAge 17Gender Male (trans)Sexuality HeterosexualFamily Douglas Rothera (adoptive father),
Darya (biological mother, mermaid),
Unknown human biological father (deceased)Appearance xxxAt first glance, Adam looks like a fairly normal, albeit
physically handicapped boy. His hair is a gingery-brown
colour, with a light wavey-ness to it, his eyes a similar
tone. His skin has a grey-ish hint to it, providing the
impression that he comes from a typically dark-skinned
ethnic group and has lost much of his natural tan. His
head has a subtle chunkiness to it, although his facial
features are very well formed, though obviously
feminine, to his chagrin. Adam’s hands have slight webs
between the digits, enough to be noticed, but loose
enough to allow him normal dexterity. He has a fair
amount of muscle on his torso, although it’s normally
under loose clothing. Adam sits in a wheelchair, doing
a good job of hiding obvious features out of his
wheelchair.
xxxThe main body of the chair works as a storage space
for a very long, highly flexible and patterned
iridescently silver scaled fish tail. He has no hips, and no
leg bones (beyond the bones used to operate his fins),
and is operated by an extension of his spine. The fin at
the end is more brightly coloured, in a rich iridescent
gold tone, and he has a dorsal fin running along most of
his back to match (thankfully for him, it can relax into a
shallow ridge).
xxxAnyone paying close attention to Adam’s face may
notice the chunkiness of him comes from having a fully
functional set of gills, including operculum, located
just in front of his ears, with just a tiny slit on either
side giving this away on land, looking like simple scars.
All his clothing is carefully selected to be able to dry
pretty quickly, while also not becoming too hard to
swim with.
Power xxxAdam has had a very mermaid-like body ever since
he was born, taking far more in appearance from his
immortal than mortal parent. He has all the abilities that
this form would allow him; he is capable of breathing
underwater, resisting any level of fluid-induced pressure
on his body, seeing clearly in water, improved night
vision in deep water, incredibly fast swimming abilities
(in part from a natural instinct for finding water
currents), and an ability to speak clearly underwater.
He has a very minimal ability to communicate with
some forms of aquatic life, primarily dolphins, a mild
resistance to many aquatic species’ venoms and of
course, his most helpful ability is being able to eat a
far wider range of aquatic species than humans can.
xxxThe downsides to this are largely in how awkward
coping on land is with a fish tail, how easy it is to
start hyperventilating by using gills to breath
(effectively giving him asthma onland), how easy
it is to give yourself away as being non-human, an
increased sensitivity to land-based illnesses and
the absolutely ridiculous amount of time needed
to keep his fins and scales healthy while primarily
being on land.
Equipment xxx Custom Wheelchair – built to accommodate his tail
fully while looking no larger than a normal wheelchair.
It’s just really cramped inside. Fake legs are attached
to the front, with a blanket fixed in such a way as to
hide all traces of the scales that creep up his torso
and its accompanying fins. The size of it allows him to
stow weaponry without it showing.
xxxToxa – Adam carries a bow and arrows as his primary
weapons on land. He’ll have the toxa on him almost
wherever he goes, but he’ll never take it underwater for
fear of damaging it.
xxxXiphos - Adam also has a short sword, which he will
only use while in water, or knowing he will soon be
entering water. It’s designed to have minimal water
resistance.
Personality xxxAdam loves swimming, and loves being in water. This is pretty understandable given his heritage. He spends
quite a lot of time just being by water, finding it calming and good for his thinking. He has an instinct to want to
take other people with him into the water, but he’s aware that this is probably largely from his monstrous
parentage, and so does his best to not allow anyone to come with him, just in case. Unlike demigods, Adam does
not have ADHD or dyslexia. However, he has had enough exposure to demigods by now that he is generally very
accommodating for these issues- or at least, tries to be-and is understanding of when they affect others. He likes
offering to be helpful to people, particularly with reading and spelling. In most regards, Adam is quite responsible,
but he should never ever be trusted to make or look after someone else’s food.
xxxAdam is very private about himself, and responds poorly to prying. He can guard a
secret very well and naturally, and always does his best to try to make wise and considered decisions about what
he says. Although he loves being with other people, he also has to spend time alone, and doesn’t expect to get on
very well with new people. Although normally fairly calm, he can become offended quite easily. He doesn’t deal
well with having to ask for help. He’s also somewhat wary of how people can react to him, so can be a little
guarded with his own reactions and responses to things, and on some level always expects disgust at him. He finds
it annoying that not only is he half monster, he has to be a monster that's always seen as female by default, and
that demigods get sketchy about being Greek.
xxxAdam is actually a very talented singer but concerns for others' safety because of his
heritage (and about others mocking his high range) often prevent him from singing near others. He has a bit of a
cheeky streak but only with close friends.
History xxxAdam never knew either of his birthparents, thanks to his mother being the merparent. It’s a little hard to
guarantee the security of each of a batch of eggs, and very easy to lose track of them. However it happened,
Douglas Rothera was walking along a beach near his Florida home, found a strange and rather obviously large
fish-egg (before everyone else due to his having a better ability to see through the mist), and decided to take it
home, to work out what to do with it later. Every day, the mass within the egg seemed to get larger, although it
was difficult to make out until one day he heard a squelching noise come from it, and a tiny hand emerged.
Douglas was thrown into a mad panic until he finally drew out the form of a strange creature; which took him a
long time to accept was an actual living mermaid child.
xxxAfraid of other people’s reaction- knowing they wouldn’t believe him at all- Douglas was very hesitant to
take the child to medical care, and ended up delaying for a while, during which time he had to learn for himself
what being a parent required, and also vaguely how to look after a mermaid child; naming him Rosalind, assuming
the child to be a girl.
xxxRosalind had issues with his initial injections (when Douglas finally decided to go to
the doctors), partially because of getting a mild version of the illnesses injected for, and partially for the fuss the
doctors made, eventually ended by a conclusion of severe physical deformity (though of what nature the doctors
couldn’t quite agree) to be remedied by his having a wheelchair.
xxxRosalind got on with his father pretty well, and Douglas soon learned both to play
along with his child’s love of water, and to stop referring to him as a girl, instead using the name; Adam. Adam did
not get on particularly well at school, partly because of being disabled, partly because of always being slightly
distracted if he hadn’t been swimming recently, partly because of his knowing he was adopted (pretty obviously
considering his physiology) and partly due to being trans among many unacceptant students in a conservative state.
He was pretty much a social outcast, which was why it was very strange to him when, upon entering a new year in
junior high school, when he was instantly approached by a new girl. Said girl seemed highly suspicious of him, like
she thought he was planning to murder her, but they eventually softened up to each other. Adam was invited by his
friend to go to a camp in the summer (she being a knowing child of Athene and assuming he was a child of Triton),
and he accepted.
xxxAs they were approaching camp, Adam physically could not pass through the barrier,
and his initial try resulted in considerable pain. She gave several attempts to get him through the barrier, but the
cabin responsible for performing guard duty, decided a good way of dealing with the wheelchair bound boy was to
chase him away while wielding spears.
xxxAdam left even after being defended by his friend, not wanting to have to deal with
the safety risk of those campers, and that he was sure would be added to that. He met Hidden not long afterwards,
and initially was very determined to hide his strange features, though once they were found out, his heritage was
worked out very quickly. His father is vaguely aware of his situation, and supportive of staying at Hidden.
Hope this is okay?
I saw that there weren't any half-monsters, and thought this could be a pretty fun way to make one, from a monster I'm pretty sure would end up having half-monster children if ancient Greeks had had more paper to write things down on.
I was trying to get a bit of the idea that mermaids tend to be associated with sirens in a couple places, while not making it a major thing.... and not trusting him with food is both about eating it himself and about really liking eating weird things, and just sort of assuming other people do too, because, well, he is half monster.
Also hoping I didn't ramble on way too long, but I like details and they sort of just come out from me... Character Form
