xxxThe she wolf breathed a sigh of relief as Finch confirmed that they were not needed back at camp. She wasn't ready to leave her spot yet, nor was she ready to mingle with the others.
Before Kirei could respond, the male pounced onto her, knocking her softly to the ground. Her eyes grew wide as he began to nibble the thick fur guarding her neck. She had been tense but her muscles began to ease as she realized that he was only playing around with her. She had to admit, she wasn't quite used to it. She grinned sheepishly and placed a paw on his shoulder, rolling him onto his back as she felt his body go purposefully still so that she could get him back.
After he let out a painful, yet obviously false howl, the red wolf rolled her eyes before getting on all fours, off of her fellow hunter. Speaking of hunting...
"I'm no where near as good of a hunter as you are, she admitted. It wasn't a lie, she was simply much smaller than he was. Her build hindered her from taking down larger prey, even if she may be quite a bit faster.
"Stalking is my forte." she explained.
Conviently, a plump grouse rustled its feathers a few yards away in a grove of trees. Grouse weren't the smartest of all birds, so it hadn't quite detected the two wolves in the clearing near it. After grinning once more at Finch, Kirei lowered herself to her stomach and slid around near the bushes behind the bird. She sat still for a few moments to make sure she had not been detected.
Grouse could run much faster than they could fly and the huntress needed to use that to her advantage. A bundle of twigs lay in a heap with some other plants and things ahead of her. She placed a paw into the bunch, pressing down until one of the twigs snapped.
The grouse startled and threw itself up into the air. It tried flying straight up, but its wings weren't designed that way. Kirei lept forward a few feet, effectively snagging the bottom of the grouse with her teeth as she opened her mouth to grab it. The grouse fell and attempted to run, but Kirei bore down into its neck. She always was careful to end things for her prey quickly. Making other animals suffer was not something she enjoyed.
"See?"
