the gleam from the orange sunset shone through her somewhat thin blinds. the girl was currently laying on her bed, the mattress almost pushing up on her body, making her feel light as if she was a part of the air. her eyes fluttered open to see the glow in the dark stars that she had glued on top of her ceiling when she had first gotten to this place. the island. it was her home. no, she didn't grow up here. yes, she was the first person to inhabit this place, but that didn't matter. the people that the stupid Aura counsel had banished here were her family. the fact that they were not blood-related wasn't something that was important in her mind. if it came down to it and she had to choose between her people and herself, she would not be selfish. this is her home. it is her job to protect it. when the claws of sleep loomed over her, she went to close her eyes once more, yet the sound of her door opening made the monsters of her nightmares fade back into the darkness. "Miss Phoneix. Miss Olivia would like to see you in the throne room if that is okay with you." she sat up, her dark brown locks falling onto her back like a waterfall. Liv. the name of her best friend made a small smile dance onto her face. it was rare that her guards ever saw her smile. a delicacy. the guard still standing in her door frame would probably go back to his quarters and tell the rest of her guards that he saw her smile. it would be the best story he would ever tell. she thought about her mask, how she should put it on, but she changed her mind. this was liv after all, and liv was the one person she could be herself in front of. phoenix got up from her bed, walking out of her room, and toward her best friend.

olivia was perched on a box, playing a low, dramatic piece while waiting for nix to wake up. her bow rose from g and d to the high e string, shrill and ever high-pitched, before lowering back to d. rosin puffed from the bow as it glided across lightly. the door opened, and she screeched to a halt-

jeez, girl, stop scaring me!

"scaring you? since when did I ever do something like that?" phoenix rolled her eyes with hints of playfulness in her golden eyes. "I never understood why you play such sad music when there is absolutely not one reason to be upset." nix sat beside liv on the box, her eyes connecting with the other females. "I was told that you were waiting for me in my throne room, not outside my bedroom."she teased, gently giving liv a punch in the shoulder.

well, whoever told you got something wrong.
liv packed the violin and bow up in her case, latches snapping shut with a mechanical whir after she closed the lid.
and, dear nix, it's not sad. it's called a classic taste.
she grinned, and returned a light knock to her forearm.

well, what would you like us to do? i could call the chefs and they could make us a meal. whatever you want to do we can do it. resting her head against the wall, taking a deep breath and just listening to the silence. it wasn't completely silent, the sounds from the kitchen, the guard's quarters, and the outside world. the bugs and the birds. the creatures that don't know the pain that the humans and we know. we are the broken ones. if only others knew how badly it could feel.

hey! we haven't been outside in a while. could go to the market, or something... fresh air!
olivia was super excited about it. she loved being outdoors, where air was mostly clean and you could do almost anything. if the rules allowed you to. if not, you've been declared dead already.

it was worth a shot liv. she laughed softly, sometimes she wondered where liv disappeared too, was she training or was she in her own quarters, doing things that she didn't like to share, whether it be showing her emotions or just playing her instrument. the market? we haven't been there since forever. let me go get my mask and then we can go.
