A season where no tract of woodland goes unblanketed in thick capes of white snow, bleaching the forest of its verdant hues.
A season when prey has long hidden deep in their underground burrows, out of sight from even the most vigilant of hunters.
A season when the ever present plague of hunger claws at the hollow bellies of every cat.
A season when anyone, from the most robust warrior to the frailest elder, can easily fall victim to disease.
Leafbare takes lives without a shred of mercy or compassion. It is inevitable, and inescapable.
All the cats of Thunderclan can do is adapt to their changing circumstances and pray that Starclan would get them through the bitter frost.
Will that be enough to save them from a threat that lies not in the season, however, but within their very own ranks? Only time will tell.

"Parsley, comfrey, horsetail...We're running low on catmint..."
A beam of sunlight streaming from the entrance of the den illuminated a portion of the medicine cat's flecked grey pelt, the rest of the shecat being swallowed up by shadows.
The piles of herbs spread out before her were pitifully low. Ashfrost grimly considered the chances of the clan making it through a greencough outbreak as bad as the one they had suffered just a few days ago. It had robbed them of the lives of several clanmates.
Willowclaw, Flamefang, Larkflight...Even their former leader, Cinderstar, had succumbed to the dreadful illness. Foxstar had been appointed leader in his place, with Graytail standing by her as deputy.
Ashfrost recounted how useless she felt that time, her frantic efforts to keep her clanmates alive amounting to nothing in the end as they all began to drop like flies around her.
She quietly swore to Starclan that she would never let such a tragedy ever strike again - not while she still alive and breathing would she lose another clanmate this season.
Her thoughts were distracted by a soft mew coming from outside.
"Come in." Ashfrost responded, dark amber gaze flickering from her dwindling herb supply to the figure who stood at the mouth of the den.
They padded up to stand by Ashfrost, a skinny finch dangling from their jaws.
"Have you eaten yet?" They inquired.
Ashfrost shook her head numbly. The pangs of hunger that wracked her body day in and day out felt like nothing compared to the sorrow of seeing her clanmates withering away from sickness right before her eyes.
"Well, I brought this for you. You should keep your strength up." They dropped the finch beside her. Hesitating for a moment, Ashfrost let herself give in to the gnawing hunger and began to tear into the bird.
"Is there anything you need help with, Ashfrost?"
The finch tasted like dust in her mouth.
"Yes, actually...There's a clump of catmint that grows under the Owl Tree. My supply is getting low, and I'd appreciate it if you could fetch some for me, if it isn't a bother. Hopefully the frost hasn't reached it yet."
The cat nodded, and turned tail to leave.
Ashfrost had her eyes trained on the finch as they slipped outside the den. A strange twinge of unease came over her. She tore her eyes away from the finch and glanced at the entrance, but they were already long gone with only shadows taking their place.
Shaking her head, Ashfrost attributed the strange feeling to the burden of the last couple of days.
If only she knew that those would be the last words they'd ever share with each other. Perhaps she should've said something with more weight to it, or at least a simple thank you for the kind gesture. Perhaps had she known what lay concealed in the thick branches of the Owl Tree, watching, waiting, then maybe then she would have tried to stop her sooner. Maybe she could have escaped the fate that awaited her. Maybe they both could have.
Maybe if she later had not chosen to act on that odd feeling tugging at her conscience, telling her to follow them to the Owl Tree just to make sure they'd be alright. Maybe then they both wouldn't have joined their fallen clanmates among the stars so soon.
As the dreary grey sky faded to indigo, beams of moonlight lit up the two unmoving figures underneath the Owl Tree. One a flecked grey pelt, the other a pelt of patched grey and ginger, both lying in pools of crimson. Ashfrost's amber eyes were as blank and lifeless as Riverpaw's sightless ones, faces still twisted into expressions of disbelief and shock.
You have lost a medicine cat and an apprentice, Thunderclan. Littlesneeze has been appointed the new medicine cat. Better act before the clock runs out.
