Story: The surface of the pond sparkled like the night sky, reflecting light in brilliant, flashing rays off the gentle ripples. A young kalon approached the waterβs edge, his paws padding silently over the soft grassy embankment that rolled down into the crystal-clear pond like an invitation. It was a balmy evening, and crickets sang an insistent song as the golden sun melted into the horizon. The kalon, whose hair was long and pale as the moon, peered down into the depths of the pond. His breath disturbed the stillness of the water as gently as a breeze, and the ripples cascaded infinitely out across the surface.
The kalon met his own gaze in his reflection, his long lashes hiding mysterious purple eyes. He looked for a long second before tilting his head, finding a better angle with which to appreciate his beauty. He smirked to himself, white teeth revealing themselves in a devilishly charming grin. He had perfected this look, and admired it in any surface remotely like a mirror.
βYou are gorgeous, Lucianβ he muttered to himself. He tilted his head the other way, continuing to admire his soft fur and luscious locks. He leaned in closer still to the water, never losing eye contact with the kalon looking back at him, not even as a splash sounded towards the middle of the pond.
As Lucian remained transfixed by his own reflection, the splashes increased in number. A glint of light would appear and vanish almost instantaneously, as if something were trying to break free of the pondβs depths. The splashes came closer still, a silvery tail breaching the surface of the pond before disappearing just as quickly, then reappearing again. Lucian was in his own world, not batting an eye until a splash broke just below his nose, and a silver fish leapt out of the water and smacked his nose.
Lucian stumbled back in shock, letting out an unflattering cry. What creature dared disturb him? He stepped towards the pond, leaning forward to get a closer look at what might have interrupted him. Seeing nothing in the darkening waters, he returned to regarding his fiercely attractive reflection. It was only moments later that the silvery form returned below the surface, gliding gracefully beneath Lucianβs reflection. The creature, which Lucian now knew was a fish, swam lazy circles in the water, its large eyes seeming to watch him as he attempted to view his reflection again.
βDo you mind?β Lucian exclaimed to the fish, who continued to impede his self-admiration. The fish eyed him and splashed again, sending ripples out and muddling the pond so much that Lucian was no longer able to see himself but for a warped image, with flashes of purple here and there.
βI see you will not desist.β Lucian stepped back from the waterβs edge and stared the fish down as it continued circling. βI shall just have to find somewhere else to admire this handsome face,β he said as he retreated, defeated.
