#5000 Polar Bear

Postby woolly » Wed May 11, 2016 1:50 pm

    // a+ idea by m a r t y r .

    Well.

Bear Run had done a lot of extravagant things in its existence, but this, this new member of the community happened to be something else.

It started with Iceland's open policy on polar bear shooting, the large carnivores not so kindly welcomed on the small island beaches. And so with the policy came the inevitable loss of a few scattered bears throughout the last couple of decades. The law wavered though, about two years ago when locals caught a mother and her cub by surprise in their need of refuge. The mother was brought down out of safety for the nearby residents, but the cub was noticed just moments later, surprising many by its appearance. It was small and fraught, weak after the long swim, and an uproar went out over its future. Bear Run being the eccentric lot they are offered to give the cub shelter and food in its reserve and soon nursed the cub to health. Meanwhile Iceland officials and courts of different nations debated and argued over the well-being of the young cub. But finally, after three long years of the cub in Bear Run custody and no set future in store, the decision was made. Slightly too late as the bear grew accustomed to icelandic tolter horses and staff, but made nevertheless.

The now young bear was meant to be offered a new home, and that's where affiliated stables started to step in. The bear currently is in need of a lifelong home, on a reserve, in a zoo, in a rehabilitation center, somewhere where the bear can grow and be welcomed for years to come. It's impossible for the bear to return 100% to the wild though, having been in the care of Bear Run for most of its young life. We're reaching out to you, tolter stables, centers, reserves, and well-meaning care-takers, to find the best possible home that can be afforded to Bear Run's first and only bear.

    Competition
Your competition is to create the most compelling case possible toward bringing the bear into your virtualistic tolter stable world. Describe the benefits it would have in your particular area, and even the less than beneficial factors, just detail how you can overcome those weaknesses. Explore where and how you would keep the bear and why it would best be suited under your ownership. Whether it lives in a zoo hosted by your equestrian center or a national park funded by your barn, even if your stables have their own rehabilitation place that would make a good argument. Really, go as wild as you want and debate however works best for you. But rather than make a case about why you want the bear, speak about what you would do for it.

This will close June 2nd with one opportunity for an extension.

    Form
Feel free to decorate and code your form however you see fit, quality over quantity though. You only have one space for extras, where you can either draw the bear, describe its' personality, its' history, or something more creative. The spaces that will be counted most heavily are its' quirks, I'd like to see what sort of quirks you can come up with for this bear. And also your argument. To be honest I would rather see strong points made rather than saddening ones, like choosing the most hopeful home for this bugger rather one that will pity it if that makes sense <33

hehe i hope this came as a surprise to y'all, hopefully a good surprise? this is the only non tolt animal that will be adopted out from the main adopts as said by dream, so it's pretty special! and hopefully you get the play on words 'bear run tolts' <33

feel free to post! I'll probably make some minor adjustments to the bear and fix up the background and radio/tracker collar.

      Username:

      Name:
Tanne (tah-nuh) (fir tree - German)
      Gender:
      Female
      Quirks:
      - Loves old quilts.
      - Constantly licks her paws and rubs them over her ears like a cat.
      - Dislikes her practically non-existent tail being touched.
      - Prefers a large blanket spread out as her bed instead of any other sort of bedding.
      - Don't give her feather pillows - will always tear them to shreds and make it "snow".
      Your Case:
It's a regular occurrence at Wolf's Peak to find injured or abandoned animals, generally Eurasian wolves. On a few occasions, there have been whole litters of wolf pups that were left for dead when hunters killed their mother. Hunting is not tolerated on Wolf Peak property, but with well over 150 acres of land, it's impossible to be everywhere at once and to stop it all together. And since that is the unchangable truth, every staff member at Wolf's Peak is trained highly in caring for abandoned and injured wild animals. Although we have never kept any of the animals we find longer than a few weeks, we have a facility specially built for caring for them and making sure they are healthy before they go back into the wild.

They are regularly put to the test on their skill, as wolves have begun to get more bold, and come closer to the barns where the Tolters are kept. Thus far, only a few work ponies have been hurt and one of our dogs. They were minor injuries, as workers arrived quickly enough to scare the predators off. Even so, it's becoming more and more dangerous, and with the colder month's just around the corner, food will begin to get scarce, forcing the wolves to come further in towards our barns, in search of it.

When the staff at Wolf's Peak heard about the rehoming of the Polar Bear, a meeting was immediately put together to discuss offering out our stable as a potential home for her. It was decided that we would send in a make shift resumè, listing our veterinary abilities, as well as descriptions of the facilities we own, and the lands surrounding it. Once it was made, it was mailed in and we went about our normal business. But with the thought of possibly having a Polar Bear come to live here, we wanted to begin making preparations just in case we were chosen to take her in.

Over the course of a few months, a new building was put up about ten yards away from the main building. It consists of four stalls, two on each side, with a wide path in between them. Each stall is about fifteen by fifteen foot, just a few feet bigger than a normal horse stall, with a thick padding covering the floors of the entire building. And then finally, the day arrived.

On a clear day in June, the sun shone down on Wolf's Peak, making it unusually warm for our area. Two staff members and myself went into town, about 20 miles from home to meet our new addition, her temporary doctor, (who was only around until our vet was taught how to properly care for the animal) and two other temporary handlers. When we arrived at the station, it wasn't difficult to find who we were looking for. There was a large crowd gathered in a circle around the outside of the train station, and in the middle was an older woman, and two young men. On a bright red dog leash with shiny brass pieces was a white fluff ball about the size of a St. Bernard dog sitting on its haunches, letting out a big yawn. My staff and I did out best to politely work through the crowd and into the middle, but none of us could hold back our excitement. One of my workers later recalled that she felt like a little kid meeting her new dog for the first time.

The ride back was slightly strenuous. First, little Tanne refused to get into the trailer alone, so one of the handlers had to sit in there with her. He failed to mention that he got car sick if he couldn't see out a window, so about 10 minutes into the drive he called the vet who was in the back seat of my truck explaining that he had just puked and he was afraid Tanne would try to eat it or something. We pulled over and got everything cleaned up, and switched him out with the other handler who we made certain didn't get car sick. Then, when we were about 10 minutes from home, one of my staff realized that her cellphone wasn't in her pocket. We pulled over (again) and searched the whole vehicle, only to discover it was in her other pocket.

Finally, we reached home. Tanne was unloaded and put into her new home to get acclimated, while I spoke with the handlers and got the final details ironed out. A week later, my staff was fully trained on how to care for our new addition, and my in house vet knew everything there was to know about giving vaccines, different illnesses and what caused them, and anything else you can think of. The old vet and the two handlers left for their home, and Tanne was ready to start her new life at Wolf's Peak.

In the weeks and months to follow, Tanne was loved and cherished at Wolf's Peak. She learned not to chase the horses, and was taught tricks, such as sit, stay, lie down, and to give when playing fetch. Once, a few loner wolves came too close to the stables - Tanne heard the frightened cries of her equine friends and charged to the rescue. Successfully driving off the wolves with a few bumps and bruises, she also managed to get a nasty gash on her hind leg. Frustratingly, she was confined to her bed for a week, but once she was healed she was thrilled to go run again.

To this day we still love little Tanne, though she isn't so little anymore. Grown to be a full-sized polar bear, she is no longer small enough to curl up in our laps and sleep. She has matured greatly and has learned to be more obedient than any dog you could ever train. She has brought so much into the livelihood of Wolf's Peak, and not once has anyone here regretted taking her into our home.

      One Extra:
      here
Wanted to add fluff and items, but may not have time now.
If this is judged before I edit it, that's totally cool though!

    Username: bears
    Name: Folskvi
    Gender: male
Quirks: Folskvi loves to rip up paper, and to keep him from becoming bored he's given several huge sheets of paper that he shreds to bits, and sometimes little pieces of paper hang from his lips. Since cardboard has a similar texture to paper, he likes that almost just as much. He likes to rip it up into tiny shreds and kick the pieces around his enclosure, chewing on the pieces until they're a soft mush.
When he hears the truck that drives to the enclosure every morning he runs along the fence and pounces the ground with what looks like a large smile on his face, jumping and playing in excitement.
All in all, he is very destructive.
    Your Case:

There was a hiccup in time when Suður Hæðir Manor ["south downs"] was located in Yukon Valley, Canada. Our first mare, Parcel, was from a lovely valley in southern Iceland, and because of that we named our barn after her home.
We shipped her up to Canada and started a small ranch, expanding the icelandic breed of tolters gradually. At one point, we owned more horses than we did land, so we decided to move.

We moved to somewhere that had more land--the birthplace of our first mare. The previous owners of the land were retiring, and we inherited the land for a discount price. A quarter of the revenues from the horses would go to the previous owners, and the rest would go to the ranch.

The day we received your unusual call about the bear that needed a home, we were a bit shocked. We were under no pressure to take the bear in, of course, as several other barns affiliated with Bear Run are lined up to take him also. We have just paid off the land, and we're starting to expand the barns and paddocks for the horses--we don't have room to rehabilitate a bear at the time, let alone the space.

After some discussion, we decided our family has been growing too large for the limited amount of land anyways, so we've looked into buying more property some where else so we can accommodate the unusual new addition if no one else can. We've scoured high and low, and settled on a familiar property that has quadrupled in size--Southern Downs of Yukon Valley in Canada, our old home. The government seized the land and had been holding it for a while, only to resell it with it's natural resources replenished.
It has adequate space, and since we've been sitting on our finances, building a home for your furry friend will be no problem.

After contacting local officials, they confirmed that if we built an enclosure that met the correct requirements, we could house a domesticated bear. Since he has been raised by humans for the first three years of his life, we're going to be building a sizable enclosure for him to live in if you choose to accept our offer. We'll leave several acres [sixty acres, to be exact] of land prepped for the construction of the habitat, and we have a construction crew on standby. I've put myself to the task of researching polar bears for weeks now, and given the finances we have, we will have plenty of money to buy hammocks, a deep freezer for meat, and an extremely large, cold swimming pool. Polar bears can inhabit an upwards of 3,000 square kilometeres in the wild, so we would look into expanding his territory by putting funds aside in a bank account with large interest. I also read that your bear likes to swim up to the glass and flip backwards under water, so we'll make sure that one side of the pool has glass and an underground building next to it so he can interact with visitors. His indoor den will be made with soft substrate, and there will be a couple other dens spread out over his territory, which will be surrounded by very high wooden fences.

We are also passionate about the cause for polar bears and will not be selling our land in Iceland, but instead renting it to a polar bear rescue center.

If you find a more convenient home for your bear, we send our regards, and aid if need be, to the future permanent owner(s).

We wish you the best in finding him a home!
Sincerely, the family at South Downs.

One Extra: I spent 2 weeks on this, and I decided on Jackle because I imagine that the two would be friends. Jackle can't see, so he wouldn't know how frightening Folskvi might be.
    This is my extra.
