Tarantula Care

Postby вєσωυℓf » Sun Oct 02, 2022 6:53 am

Hey! I'm in the process of ordering and caring for my first tarantula! The website I am ordering from suggest small and medium B. Lateralis roaches, but I'm wondering how to keep the roaches. I'm not looking to breed them at the moment. So if anyone has any suggestions, I would be grateful to hear! :D

Hi, my husband has a few tarantula's, but we share the same feeder insects. We usally keep them in the bin/tub they came in. They are very tough insects and stay alive for quite some time. If you don't like the tub they came in you can also buy a tub with a lid from your local dollarstore. But make sure to put small air holls in them. You can put some egg cartons in the tub, that will provide some hiding spaces for the roaches.

You can feed them any foodscrap if you like, but don't leave the foodscrap inside the tub for longer than a few hours. It can start to rot very quickly.

The Leorpard Gecko channel on youtube has great tips for keeping feeder insects if you're looking for more information.

Roaches are very easy to care for! I would give them a shallow water dish (like a gatorade bottle cap or something) and a dish of dry dog/cat food, then would give them vegetable matter every now and then. You can also buy cricket watering cubes for the roaches, although that's more expensive. Definitely give the roaches places to hide!

And even if you're not looking to breed, you may end up with babies anyway. I had that species for a short period at work and they were kind of a pain. A few escaped and we were finding them for quite some time.

We are thinking about breeding since we have other critters who can eat them as well, thanks for the tips! They will definitely be helpful ^^
