Long ago, this buck was a beautiful bird, with bright plumage that sparkled as he flew and a voice as grand as the winds themselves. However, pride can be deadly, and prideful he was. Every dawn he would fly above the forest and proclaim to all that he was the most splendid bird to have been born, and how gracious he was to let them see a mere glimpse of him. A forest goddess by the name of Alaie saw this, and was disgusted. She disguised herself as a plain doe, and the next morning called out to the prideful bird, her dark brown eyes watching his foolish display. Landing on a branch next to her, the bird laughed. "How awful it must be, to have no wings and no colors, just that plain, boring brown. Have you come to admire me, as the other forest creatures do?"
The doe shook her head. ":No, I have come to tell you of your wrongs. Beauty is as beauty does, and perching before me I see no great beauty, just a small bird with a grand attitude."
The bird, hearing this, squawked in outrage. How dare she?! " At least I am not an ugly deer who is doomed to walk the earth, never to feel the wind beneath her wings! It would be the greatest shame to be like you!"
The doe simply smiled at this."Then you have chosen your own punishment. From this day forth, you will be a brown buck, your antlers filled with colorless birds to show what you have lost. Never again will you fly, and never will you die. Marked V's will be painted onto your dull fur, to show your descent into this form you so despise." With that, the goddess turned to her true form and looked down on what she had created. The buck weeped, for this body was not his own, not the beauty he had once held so dear.
She looked at him one final time, and decided to take pity. " In 100 years I will return, and ask of you the reason I cursed you so. If you answer correctly, I will return you to your former glory."
The stag leapt to his hooves. "I already know the answer!"
"No, you do not." With that she left, leaving the buck to his life as a wanderer. Gradually he became aware of the beauty all around him, with it's mellow colors and silent grace. Of the beauty of the wolves, who hunted him on nible paws and watched with golden yellow eyes. Of the simplicity of life, and it's twists that made it worth living. And so the great stag learned, and became a part of the forest.
When the 100 years had come to pass, the godess returned as she had promised. "Do you know the answer now, Great Stag?"
He nodded. "It is not a curse at all." And then he walked away, his hooves leaving light indentions on the snow covered ground.
