It was a freezing Saturday morning and mist curled around the small frost covered houses. I pulled my coat around me and trudged down the road shivering. I suddenly heard a loud snort.
"Who's there?" I yelled into the mist.
"Are you alright?" Mr Smith asked from behind me. I jumped.
"Yeah fine, just thought i heard something..." I stopped, he frowned. "Nothing!" I smiled running off.
After ten minutes i arrived at the bakery. Several people were sat on some chairs at the back of the shop.
"What are they doing?" I asked quietly as she handed me the bread.
"They just lost their home. Do you want a bag?" She asked briskly. I nodded, took one more look at the family and walked out into the cold. I walked back slowly listening out for anything strange. I suddenly went flying. I dropped the bag and crawled on my hands and knees searching. The fog was now much thicker making things much worse and i still hadn't found the bread. I bumped into a wire fence and pulled my self up. I checked my pocket looking for something useful but they were empty. I heard a shuffling noise and looked up.
Two eyes stared at me through the fog. I started walking backwards and stood on the bread. i picked it up keeping my eye on the eyes. I groaned now what? Mum was going to kill me. A streetlight suddenly flickered on and i saw the beautiful creature.
"It's alright!" Soothed trying to stop myself from running in horror. how could someone treat an animal like this.
A thin silver stallion stood in front of me. He had several deep wounds and a scar across his left eye and a deep slash on his side. He had obviously tried to escape several times to find food. His little yard had no grass and just a small puddle for him to drink out of, he had no food and was very weak. I ran across the road and picked a big handful of grass. He took the grass willingly and sniffed my hand for more.
"Echo?" I asked noticing a name engraved into a slab of wood."Is that your name?" I asked stroking his soft muzzle. I left him and started running home. I hurried into the barn and found a big bale of hay and a bucket.
I dragged the bale and bucket all the way back to Echo and opened the small side gate. I just about managed to fit the hay through and pulled it next to him. While he ate i ran to a tap and filled the bucket up with water.
"I have to go!" I told him, "I'll be back soon though." I ran of closing the gate behind me. I suddenly remembered I'd left the bread in the barn and hurried to get it.
"Where have you been?" Dad asked from behind me, "And why was there bread in the barn?" he handed me the bread and sighed, "Food!" He motioned towards the house and i trudged inside. I struggled to pull my wellies of and henry my brown and white puppy bounded up to me.
"Who's in there?" I asked hearing talking.
"Jack." Dad laughed, i groaned and tried to sneak past them.
"Jazz, can you get changed!" Mum had spotted me.
"Fine!" I hissed in annoyance as i climbed the stairs. I quickly changed into a checkered t-shirt and jeans. I walked into the kitchen head down and pulled out a chair for myself.
"Hi!"Jack smiled, I frowned in annoyance. Mum gave me my food and i ate it quickly.
As soon as i was finished i slipped out to find Echo. I took a shortcut this time but ended up being stung and cut. Echo came to greet me when i arrived and i hugged him.
"Who's that?" I shrunk in terror. It was jack he'd followed me.
"He's called Echo! I'm looking after him for a friend!" I explained halfheartedly. Jack snorted.
"You really think i believe you?" He asked stubbornly. I shook my head.
"Of course not you probably don't even understand what I'm saying!" I said in babyish voice. He narrowed his eyes. I was enjoying this he was so easy to annoy. I patted Echo.
"Do you have a halter?" I asked Jack. He nodded, "Go and get it then!" He hurried of. It was a good thing his dad owned the stables.
A while later he returned with a blue one and i snatched it of him. I opened the side gate and approached Echo talking to him calmly. He was really well behaved when i tried to put it on him so good in fact that it only took five minutes. i led him past Jack and took him into the field. I tied him up and refilled the bucket. Jack held him while I poured water over him. I looked around and jack pulled a grooming set out of a bush.
"Hey!" I yelled annoyed, "You hid that there on purpose." I took the set reluctantly and started brushing minding out for the wounds. I found an antiseptic cream in pocket and applied it carefully.
