This is kind of a fake-death, but Valentine's "death" scene in The Count of Monte Cristo gets me every single time. Not only is she one of my top favourite characters, but her father and, of course, Max, are also some of my favourites, and it just breaks my heart to see them so sad. And worse, her father never gets the chance to find out she's actually alive (because of some other events. I won't explain them, because explaining a single plot point in the book ends up requiring an explanation of basically the whole thing, since everything is so interconnected)

maybe i just have massive tbhk brainrot rn, but mitsuba, he just... how dare you?? all three times. i cannot believe it happened three times because like how does someone die that many times, and how does it always hurt that much... like. it doesn't matter if you read the manga or not, because even the time in the anime it hurt. like, yeah he was always dead but that doesn't mean it doesn't hurt like hell. like he was doing as well as he could and then he just comes along and murders him?? who does that?? i mean tsukasa obviously but really??
