His herd, the old, the young, the rams, the does, all tired and worn. Why? Because they were following him. He was the one making the decisions, affecting all there lives that could spiral to become things he never imagined. It was a position he would rather not fill, but life had chosen for him. And why? Because he was his father's son.-------------~-------------~-------------~-------------~-------------~-------------~-------------~-------------~-------------
Aulus turned away from the cliff and back towards the herd, the number-one priority he had been saddled with. He hadn't wanted this, any of it, and he still didn't.
"Let's go!" he called to the herd, trying to keep the weariness out of his voice, trying not to let them hear how unconfident their leader was. He moved on, leading them nevertheless, as his thoughts traveld back to the time when everthing had been so nice
.A small kid, the son of the fabulous Caecilius. Caecilius...their leader, their protector, the one they could always trust. And Aulus was his only child, who he doted upon. With his mate, Valeria, dead, Aulus was the apple of his eye. But Caecilius did not let his child become spoiled; he tested Aulus, taught him how to survive, to be strong, to lead. Aulus paid close attention, but he was not cut out for this type of thing. He did not like to be in charge, to have that responsibility on him.
But Caecilius supported his son anyway, though he was secretly disappointed. Aulus never bloomed as his father did. He wasn't as personable, or as entertaining, or as strong. He didn't have many friends, though everyone knew him as "Caecilius' kid." Aulus didn't really mind though--he never had been one to rely on the attention of other people. Except for his father, who he adored.
Things went on in this way until Aulus was a young adult. That was when things went wrong. Another herd, infamous for conquering other herds, came after theirs. Caecilius led a charge against them, trying to defend the territory. He was mortally injured by the leader of the other herd. It turned out that Caecilius had protected his herd too well, for once he was injured, they scattered, afraid. They left Caecilius behind.
The other herd chased behind Caecilius' herd, intent on taking the land and capturing the goennecs. Caecilius lay on the ground, in anguish that he hadn't been able to protect his herd.
Everyone was gone but Caecilius. Except Aulus was still there. Once the others were gone he ran out and dropped to his father's side.
"Aulus...!" Caecilius said, breathing with difficulty.
"Father, are you okay?" asked Aulus, even though he knew that Caecilius wasn't.
"Protect the herd..." Caecilius said weakly.
"I will..." said Aulus, even though he didn't know if he could.
"I'm...proud of you son...and...I love you..."
"I love you, too," said Aulus as his father died. Aulus clenched his eyes shut, then opened then again. There was no time to mourn. He had to fulfill his father's last wish. He ran to the herd, some of which were bleating in fear as they were being attacked, some of which were fighting the intruders. Aulus looked about, unsure of what to do.
Then, as if watching himself, he called out, "Follow me!" He began to run, away from the attackers. The rest of the herd glanced at him. Then...they began to follow. Their leader was dead, who better to take Caecilius' place, than his son?
Aulus wondered what he was going to do now. They were being pursued. But then, he realized that the intruding herd didn't know the land like his herd did. Swiftly, he took the most dangerous and complicated path he could...

Aulus turned his head and listend. The sound of hoofbeats on the stones far away reached his ears. They were still coming, it would be too much of a sacrifice of honor to not capture Caecilius' herd...or was it Aulus' now? Or nobody's? Aulus didn't know, but he new he had to fulfill his father's wish.
"Let's go...!" he called out to them.
