I don't like posting my art until it's done, but I need help with making the background, can anybody tell me how to make it so I can do the background without ruining my coloring? I would really appreciate the help, and if you have any tips on how to make this even better for the final drawing, that would be great as well thank you

Um, if you use layers and you put this layer above the new one, then you can colour in the background without mixing with the mermaid. If she is indeed a mermaid, you could add scales on her tail

I have tried that, but the colors all mix together. What I'm looking for is how to color the background in without it touching the mermaid's colors, like in some of the editables... I hope to add scales to her tale, but unfortuantly I am struggling with those as well :S

Yep, I know what you're talking about. Did you add layers in? You know the 'lock Alpha' thing? I don't actually know how 'lock Alpha' works, but if you create layers, you can colour in the background. If layer2 (background) is above layer1 (mermaid), then the background will cover the mermaid but if you move it down, the mermaid will be on top of the background.

Layers are really useful when you're drawing new things on your art
