Like I said, I have made an updated version of my fur detailing tutorial.
Step 1: Draw a blob of color, this will be the main color of your fur
Step 2: Time to use our friend the dodge tool. I first went over loosely it using opacity 80* and brush size 3 using smooth strokes then switched to 100 opacity and brush size 1 to fill in most of the space
Step 3: Same as step 2, but I used the burn tool and went over it with 50 opacity first, with size 3 brush again, and then switched to 25 burn for the size 1 brush
Step 4: I went over it with the default blur setting(full opacity, size 20 brush) and then used the smudge tool on size 1 and opacity 150, making sure not to leave gaps of unsmudged fur
Step 5: Add details, like shading. I used my own shading style for this, which I can also make a tutorial for if you want, and instead of using the dodge/burn tools, I used the air brush. Unless your fur is grey, black for shading and white for highlighting is a no. Drag the color selector on an angle, either towards the white or black corner depending on if you want to shade or highlight, and use the color you get thats about half your color, half white/black, and use opacity 5-15 to shade the fur like you would a drawing.
*Opacities used will vary depending on your fur color, generally darker colors need burn to be higher than the dodge and vice versa for lighter colors. So dark grey may have a burn opacity of 100 and a dodge of 30, while beige could have 30 burn and 100 dodge.
