the crown slips from heads unworthy

they slipped along quietly, softly in the night. their paws made hardly a sound as they traveled the cobble-stoned roads, hidden by the shadows of the conjoined buildings on either side of them. in all of them, whether they be feline or canine, their breath caught in their throat every time someone in the homes made a noise. their eyes were wide with anticipation and their blood was flowing with adrenaline... the patrol was hardly visible, as their leader has planned well; a cloudy night with a new moon was the perfect time to begin to overthrow the empire.
the castle loomed overhead as they grew closer. their leader stopped, flicking her long tail as she did so. the shadows behind her scattered. they knew where to go. they vanished in the shrubbery of the vast palace garden, seeking out the secret tunnels and passageways that the traitors had given them access to for a pawfull of gold.
the clouds shift: she becomes visible. a wild grin stretches across her red and grey face as she gazes up at the upper-most tower.
pity...the old chap will never have a chance...
