hookfang wrote:For me, the best thing that helped with getting a lot of variation in my faces/body types was references! So many references! I use references for most of my drawings and it helps so much. You can only do so much with muscle memory, the more funky references you use the easier youβll find it gets to draw pretty much anything.
A fun exercise to do on your own is find art or images that inspire you and break them down. Itβs a training technique thatβs been around forever and itβs absolutely super. Trace over your chosen image, figure out the shapes and why the artist chose to draw it that particular way, try drawing a little study side by side and see if you can figure out how they drew it. Youβll learn a lot from these little exercises. Just obviously donβt trace someoneβs art and call it your own ^^β these should be private little studies you just do for practice. Watching speedpaints and studying them is super helpful too. <3

neapolitan wrote:ok i dont wanna post this on oekaki bcs itd look kinda messy, but here's some general notes + drawovers i made!
this sounds so messy but its what i think about when i draw personally.
- the front view is cute as heck, so no need to actually mind what i did there too much. my front views are very different too so its fineee (example:)![]()
- face shape is very square in your art, so the face and snout end up at the same level. if you start the snout at half the face you'll have space to add the other eye! i showed this with the circle + snout thing
- necks are a bit slim, i didn't know how to fix it really but i personally add more fluff at the back of the head and the front of the chest (so not the whole neck!) to give it a more defined and cartoony shape
- eyes should be higher up :3
i draw a lot off dog images i find so i've picked up on a lot of small anatomy things i can use and simplify, so id reccommend that if you struggle remembering the "dog shape" off the top of your head
last notes:
- cover face imperfections with eyebrows and blush
- cover shape imperfections with fluff
- use lots of curved shapes, even if it feels weird in the sketch
all these things combined gives you a pretty well rounded dog drawing. thumbs up
