i had to have a lot of practice with it though, i didn't magically get it perfect the first time.
After I color my animal with the normal base color (use the pen tool) then i start the fur.
I use the pencil tool on a fairly large size and a lighter color than the base color. I make short strokes all over where I want fur to be.
Then I make my brush smaller and give it a lighter color. I go over my strokes (remember what direction the fur is going in) and I do this over and over with smaller sizes and lighter colors.
Then, when I want to shad dark areas, I use the airbrush tool and shade wherever necessary in a darker tone of the base color.
I hope this helps!
