i am a poor wayfaring stranger

Postby EmberWolf » Sat Jun 13, 2020 5:51 am

Is it obvious I just got around to watching 1917?

Anyways I'm going to talk a bit of my interest in WWI below so if you are not interested in reading about war stuff please scroll along!

---

I had the privilege to take a historic-themed road trip through northern France last year with my brother, who lives and breathes history and just graduated with a history major and is off to get his masters next fall. While memorable and fascinating, it was also an incredibly somber experience. Reading about The Great War in books and watching movies is one thing but going to the forest of Verdun and seeing hundreds of craters still visible under the plant growth, to be driving through the quiet French countryside and occasionally coming across a town sign with the name crossed out and "Village Detruit" - village destroyed - marked below, was an experience that will stick with me forever. We went to the Douaumont Ossuary where the graves of hundreds of soldiers lie, and the unidentified bones of thousands upon thousands more. The surrounding forests are often marked as not to be entered because there could still be landmines there. WWI was, in every sense of the word, horrific. Something I often think about is the hundreds of thousands of horses, mules, and donkeys that were brought into it and never came out of it.

I'm not really sure where I'm going with all this, but 1917 was good and I just wanted to get this out of my system.

This is gorgeous!! Your anatomy and shading/lighting is incredible.

That trip sounds like a very cool and profound experience. I think 1917 did a good job of depicting some of the horrors of the war thsf you mentioned without ever showing much fighting at all.

(Also seconding the love for the War Horse stage play!! It was amazing.)

I dont know why I didn't see this sooner but this is amazing!
History itself is so important and fascinating. A few summers ago I got to go to a women's camp, the state park we stayed started as an encampment during the Indian Wars in 1874, its the location of Crazy Horse's death. It was also a calvary location, training camp, POW camp, and trained military dogs.
I was placed in an early class as a mistake, at first I was a little upset until I realized what an amazing opportunity I had been given. I got to go on a full historic tour which isnt something they usually offer. I took notes to share with my family.

Its a place I will never forget
