The reason that I wrote Masquerade on it is because it's the Phantoms favorite song. You may wander why the Phantom embrasess death. I believe it's because it's the one thing that he feels he has in common with society. In the book The Phantom Of The Opera, the writer uses the word death 79 times and the word dead 49 times. The subject is both forced apon the readers/watchers and the characters. But the writer also uses roses to repressent life. As written:
"They were marvelous red roses that had blossomed in the morning, in the snow, giving a glimpse of life among the dead, for death was all around him."
Now believe me, for me to understand something of this complexety so fully at my age is quite amazing. Death is some thing that, Westernly, we try to aviod. In our sub-consious,we like to think of immortality. I'm live in Canada, so this is true for me as well. But we, as people, should accept death instead of deny it. I'm not saying that it's not scarey, we just reject it to fully.
Masquerade!
Paper faces on parade . . .
Masquerade!
Hide your face,
so the world will
never find you!
That is part of the chorus, and it has a deep emotional and mental meaning to th Phantom. In all honesty, if I knew some one with a face like his, would get used to it to see the true person behind the face. (though i would probably take several months)
Could you learn to love the person behind the mask too?
