Paper Vulpix

Postby Vampiric » Wed Aug 14, 2019 1:20 pm

I like this one a lot better. I think i've gotten the idea of shading down more.

starpups16 suggested vulpix, tada!

See my last paper oekaki here.

Here's how I make these: Click!
WARNING! If you don't like using layers, or spending a lot of time on oekaki, this may be a struggle for you. Layers are key to this.

    1. Rough sketch on new layer. Leave this layer on low opacity.
    2. New layers below sketch. Block in colours you need, Darker shades ideally at the back or for parts that are 'further away' logically speaking. Each blocked in area is a different layer, so that we can shade and texture them after this. In example, each tail here is a different layer, with the furthest away tail being the lowest down, etc. Starting from the 'back' is my suggestion.
    3. Once everything is blocked in and the colour you like, remove the sketch.
    4. OPTIONAL STEP. If you want to texture it like different paper patterns, you will have to hand draw and create them yourself (at least on oekaki :P). Making repeating patterns is fairly simple, you can google this. Reference textured papers from google for inspiration on those too. I make a roughly square texture block, then duplicate and tile it.
    5. Overlay the textures on their own layers above each blocked layer, using clipping to keep the shape of the block. Play around with the layer type as well as the colour of your textures. I also texture the same colours with the same patterns (as if cut from the same paper). You can do anything!
    6. Shading is simple. I only shade the parts that are underneath another 'piece of paper'. So in this example, the hind leg is behind the body and front leg, so I shade a small sliver of multiply shading here. Again, each shading layer is clipped to keep the shape and prevent overflow.
    7. And to carry this on, you can either blur it a bit or airbrush around the edges to fade it out a little. This is personal preference if you want to do this but I think it looks more naturally lit.
    8. From here you can use all the techniques above to shade beneath the whole image (in this case the whole vulpix), make a background, etc.

This is incredible tbh I can't imagine how you even thought to pull something like this together on oekaki - but look at how it turned out! It would make a sweet phone case tbh
Have a good day y'all.
