prompt: “so where’d you come from?” the barkeeper asked, leaning over the counter to get a better look at the cloaked creature. the small face of a child peeped out from beneath the hood, his pale skin tear-stained and bloodied. silently the child turned and pointed a finger towards the east, towards the land of the cursed. tattooed on the back of his hand was a cross.

“$#@%! you’re one of them, aren’t you?!” he roared in anger. everyone knew that just conversing with a cursed one could cause financial ruin and other tragedies. “get out!” he rose a liquor bottle threateningly, “leave right this instant!”

the child fell to his knees trembling, his head bowed in surrender. slowly he reached a hand into his pocket and pulled out a crumpled piece of parchment. dropping the paper on the floor in front of him, the child crawled back towards the door, never raising his eyes. ——— (154/400 words)

With a tired grin, and a wave of his hand, the male would take a seat at the bar and pulling his drink close. "If you think you have the time," his voice was hard and sounded naturally harsh, if it weren't for his more open demeanor, he'd seem intimidating, though his tired resting face didn't help. When an accepting word came from the barkeep who began cleaning glasses, Akim began; "I'm from the desert," and that begun the tale of his life.The tale of his struggles to live, how he found himself alone, the unfortunate prominent thieves and how he fell to become one of them simply to live. The story paused, and he assured the stranger that he wasn't interested in robbing him. That earned an amused chuckle, "What a relief," and then his story continued to his reasons for leaving before finishing with, "Keeping it brief, I'm tired of the sand," Akim spoke, exasperated. "Ready for a change of pace. I don't quite know where I'm headed...I guess wherever this takes me. My adventure will stop once I find a place I like, wish me some luck, eh?"
And with that, he took the finishing sip of his drink, paid and left with a wave, slipping out of the bar and wondering where life would take him next.
