“ My fur is now grey,
My lungs now ache,
I no longer jump and play,
When I walk my paws quake.

I think of all the fun,
But all I do is rest,
Is my time really done?
Did they call me the best?

I wonder if I am a good boy,
I wonder if I am enough,
I no longer can chase my toy,
I am no longer tough.

I think of my littermates,
And all of our owners,
How we’re all drawing near our fates.
I hope they know we will always be theirs.

I would lie by their side,
For the rest of my days,
But when I said I didn’t hurt, I lied,
Now when the pain comes, it stays.

But I will always be,
And I will always be right here,
I might struggle to see,
But with you I have no reason to fear.

When you hug me tonight,
Remember I was your first,
And when you turn off the lights,
Remember that with love for you my heart bursts.

You will always be my person,
And I hope I will always be your best boy,
Because when it’s the golden gates where I run,
I will only feel joy.

Forgive me for my wrinkles,
Forgive me for my cries,
But there is still that twinkle,
Right here in my eyes.
