personality ;; he lOves sarcasm- he thinks it's the best way to reply to any sentence. he uses humor to cover up the fact that he's actually hurting. he has lots of trust issues and because of it no one really knows him- he doesn't know how to open up. he can come across as really moody when you first meet him because his mind is constantly thinking really fast and one thing can lead him to another and he can be happy one minute and angry or sad the next. he's suffering from a bipolar disorder, but he's not diagnosed and refuses to go to a doctor or admit he's different. he has a fear of failure and is always afraid of letting people down. he almost always brooding around and is kind of antisocial. he struggles to communicate his feelings with people and is more likely to strike up a conversation with someone he will never see again because there's something stable to him about telling someone who won't take what he says home with them.

history ;; as a kid he was in and out of foster care. as a cute kid, lots of people would pick him up and then once they got home and the shyness didn't go away after months spent in their care, he just because antisocial. he'd always end up back in the office. the system was rough on him and made him angry at life and everyone who took him in because he knew they'd just be taking him back. he made a lot of rash decisions and ended up in a group home for a few years in high school, which in a way "straightened him out". one of the ladies at the group home saw potential in him and got him a job in a law firm mail room. he dreams of someday quitting, but is afraid to end up on the streets. he's living in what might be considered the ghetto because of his lack of income. work makes him aggravated and all he wants to do while he's there is go home; he's much angrier at work. when he isn't working, he's just sleeping. despite hating his job, he works a lot of overtime. for what no one really knows- he just seems to spend it on more food because he isn't one to have many friends so it's not like he goes out and he has little value or appreciation for material things.

ability to make friends ;; he has a really hard time making friends- if he has good friends they're probably from his high school rebel days. If that's the case, he'll always be there for any of those friends when they call on him. friends he's made after high school he's likely to not be as close to, but that doesn't mean he doesn't care about them. if someone is close enough to him for him to consider them friends, he already cares about them.

emeris ;; when he first met emeris, they were kind of in the same boat, so he really respected her and this soon turned into a crush on her, her cold-hearted and show-no-emotion dominant personality type made him drawn to her, however, he withdrew for fear of possibly being shot, as she was the leader of the gang and he was more of alumni to them. their mutual respect for each other is actually a sort of friendship, but neither of them would ever admit it.

walker quinn ;; he relates a lot to walker- he sees himself in him when they're around each other. both of them ship naomi and aulora together- so they have that to relate to. he secretly thinks he's a bad influence on aulora, but respects and values his familyhood with walker. he's the least close to walker, not necessarily because he likes him less, they're just not as close.

naomi ;; he respects naomi a lot and he laughs at how she was charmed into a gang by a pretty girl. he would never intentionally upset her, as he knows what her temper is capable of. because of this he's often walking on eggshells around her in an attempt to never upset her. even though he laughs at her, he respects her and loves her as much as everyone else.

aulora ;; aulora is like his little sister. he loves her and wants to protect her from everything he's been through. since she's the youngest he just wants to support her and try to keep her out of jail and wants her to stay in her shell of shy purity. despite all this, he would never stop her from participating in any gang activity or trouble. he would respect her choices to join in because he went down the same road and would never judge her.

hansel ;; wip ;; they're not like good friends because I couldn't see them hanging out all the time or even being really close but thrill junkies ? they could definitely be partners in thrill- like all the stuff he likes to do- he'd definitely be up to do stuff sometimes (though they'd probably have to go with hansel's hobbies, most of his thrills involve breaking the law) but probably not on a regular basis as they'd be kind of newer friends ? powder ;; he has a white corn snake, but he doesn't take him out much because he's so busy with all that sleeping he does. the snake was actually a birthday gift from a friend of his and he actually really does value the gift. he loves powder and likes to show him off to people who show up at his door. powder is the one thing that coal isn't an sociopath about. if you want to see powder, most of his anger and bipolar-ness sort of melts.


hobbies
reading ;; if you looked at him from the outside, you'd never know that he's a reader. he actually likes books quite a bit- he likes to feel like nothing else exists besides the book in front of him. he did spend some time in juvie as a kid and he spent most of his time there reading books recommended by the other kids in there.
listening to music ;; okay so it's not exactly a hobby, but coal is kind of boring. he doesn't do much but he listens to music everywhere he goes. he's passionate about everything he listens to. he loves every kind of music (not really country though because that's not just him honestly, but he doesn't have a problem with anyone who listens to country). once a song is stuck in his head he'll hum or sing it all day until he plays the song over and over and then finds himself a new song to stuff himself with for the next day.
playing guitar ;; he is an aWFul. guitar player. but at least he is trying. he's self taught so he doesn't even know all the chords or how to play half of the things in the guitar world, but he can jam to some crappy unknown songs that he heard once and learned how to play. his first song was coconut skins by damien rice, except he doesn't know how to hammer the a string or sing along with it.
writing songs ;; no one he knows will ever, ever read the songs he writes. he feels like the things he writes tend to reveal too much about himself to others and he hates feeling vulnerable and not in control of the part of himself that people see. his writing style is a lot like twenty one pilots (not that he's that basic), but in the sense of poetry put to a rhythm and played with some crappy background guitar. if he even tELLS you that he writes songs you're on his a-list.
sleeping ;; like I said, he's kind of boring. he wants to almost always be sleeping- even if he's not tired he'll be yawning and then be like gosh I'm so tired. sometimes he'll get migraines from just being tired. pulling all nighters? heCK NO. he'll get a really bad headache and then he won't be aBLE to sleep for days. it takes him a long time to revert back to a schedule after he messes it up.
