for Hinode
the first step in shading is picking where the light source is coming from, let's say that ball of yellow in the top left corner is the sun, that is where the light is coming from.
parts close to the sun, not being blocked by anything, are going to have less shading on them
parts blocked by the sun have more shading on them, since the light isn't hitting that area.
I used the airbrush tool to create this soft lighting, the way you shade in drawings can really help bring out the mood you want. darker shading usually helps with sad or dramatic moods, or darker areas. the opposite for light areas or happy moods
you may be able to see I actually clicked the lock alpha button in my layers screen (i made a seperate layer under the one you drew on for the shading) and erased the edges of some of the surfaces, this makes a more shiny and interesting look.
oh, and I also messed with the layer opacity on the layers tab on the side by making it go down a little, this makes what I drew lighter in color.
I'll show you another way or two to shade when I get home from the party I'm going to, I gotta go now
