What Are Hydro Hounds?

Born in the depths of the ocean, Hydro Hounds are aquatic canines who have qualities of both fish and dogs. Originating in the lost city of Atlantis, each Hydro Hound is born in a pair and are raised as hunters and guardians for their human masters. They have a wide variety of different Traits but are well known for the three fins that run down their backs, two bills, and the gradient mark on their sides. This mark is known as the ocean mark and, though found in many different shapes and colors, it represents the bond of the Hound and the sea. Puppies do not gain this mark until they reach a certain age.

General Rules

~You may own up to 15 Hydro Hounds
~These are free however you must win them via competitions
~Please respect the staff and other adopters
~NO bribes, complaints, begging, etc.
~No stealing others Hydro Hounds and do not claim the designs as your own
~If banned, I gain the right to take away your Hounds and put them up for re-adoption
~More to come as I figure this out

Artist Rules:
~You are required to make at least one adoptable a month.
~You are not allowed to copy other people's designs or use images off of google
~You may not place one of your original characters into these lines unless given permission by me
~You should at try your best to answer any questions that may be given about the species and only contact me if absolutely needed
~More may be added as this progresses. It is your responsibility to keep up with these rules and understand them.

*Shading Is Soon To Be Added To The Designs. Any Designs Already Made Will Have Custom Shading.

Species Origin

Hydro Hounds are said to have once been the first canine companions of man, appearing on ships in which the sailors threw food scraps into the water. They were originally treated as pests however, once sailors began to understand their usefulness in battle and on the ship, they began treating them as pets. Eventually the demand for them became so great that everyone wanted a hydro hound. Sadly there wasn't enough information on them and they were extremely difficult to find, until now. Researchers recently discovered a sanctuary of these beasts when they came across the lost ruins of Atlantis. Their role in atlantean society was also discovered. Hydro hounds were found to be guardians and companions, working alongside soldiers and citizens alike. They were there when Atlantis was built, they were there when it prospered, and they were there when it fell. Now, though. instead of falling with their original companions, hydro hounds began seeking out a new companion and they found it in humans. In order to protect the species, scientists are intrusting humans with Hydro hounds in hopes that their relationships will replicate those of the ancient atlantians and that some if not all mysteries of the hydro hounds will be completed.

Species Facts and Lifestyle

Basic Facts:
Height: Each ranges from 3 to 4 feet tall. Larger and/or smaller can be found but they are much harder to find.
Length: About 1-2 meters long
Weight: 100 to 150 pounds when wet. when dry, 45 to 85 pounds.
Diet: Carnivores - Eat fish, shellfish, crayfish, etc.
Housing: Normally sleeps and nests in water. They often live near reefs, in caves, or kelp forests.
Breeding: Requires two parents, male and female despite sexuality, and eggs are almost always born in pairs. Sometimes an extra is born, which is known as a runt, and in nature it was almost impossible for these to survive. Under human care however they can. Sometimes, if a pair of adults that the scientists own bear a runt, it will be offered up for adoption at a young age so it can be imprinted on by its new parents.

Species Adaptations

Adaptations:
~3 Spines Down Back: Each Hydro Hound has 3 webbed spines that run down it's backbone. Used mainly for steering, these spines allow the hydro hound to cut through and change directions, even through the strongest currents.
~Fur On Upper body: Though Hydro Hounds are born in warm shallow waters, they often migrate to the colder depths of the ocean to gain their Ocean Marks and many choose to stay there. In order to protect themselves and their main vital organs such as the brain, heart and lungs, they've grown a thick warm coat of fur there yet they still retain the smooth, slick hindquarters.
~Scales on Underbelly with no fur: While the fur offers protection to the upper body, it's scales offer protection to the lower body. This is to protect against anything underneath such as reefs, rocks, etc.
~Webbed Feet: Each Hydro hound has webbed feet and a fin on each foot. This is to allow them to swiftly push through the water while the fins allow it to choose which directions the force goes.

Runner Up System

Runner Ups are found on Hydro hounds!
For those who don't know what a runner up is, it's a pet that is created for a second place winner during an adoptable competition. These normally share a similar or the same theme as the original pet. These are treated as regular adoptables and follow all of the original rules. Now, for my artists, there are several rules to making RU's.
~There may only be one RU per adoptable unless I've granted you permission.
~RUs must follow a similar theme to the original but they cannot have the same color scheme or Ocean Mark. (Similar ones are permitted but there must be some difference in them.
~RU's do get a number just as any other and are also posted under the main thread.

Honorable Mention System

HMs can also be found on Hydro hounds!
For those who don't know what an HM is, it's where, if someone puts a lot of work into a competition or adoptable, they get recognized. After gaining enough hm's, or Droplets as we use here, they can put them together to gain a custom Hydro hound.
~It takes three droplets to create a hydro hound
~The HH's made through this system are treated as customs. See the Custom thread for more info.

Howdy! I'm cyberdragon725 but feel free to call me Cyber! Hydro Hounds was a little idea that popped into my head about half a year ago. Before now, I've never had really any inspiration to make them into a full out species. I still think the name is dorky though... *Add Sweatdrop Here* Anyway, here they are, rearin' and ready to go!
