Hmm... Well, I personally like to make my irises look very shiny when it comes to drawing eyes, and in order to make the iris look nice and bright compared to the rest, you have to shade. When you shade, start with light opacity levels, because it's allot easier to make something darker than to make it lighter in my opinion. ^^ just take your time, and practice! It's always good to study pictures by looking them up on Google, and paying attention to the shadows and highlight, because in the end, you will find that those are 2 of the most important things when it comes to art. ^^ but the best thing when it comes to art is creating your own style and ways by taking inspiration from another person's style and way of drawing. C: just like how I draw my eyes could be totally different than the way someone else draws them, and so we can each learn from each others ways in order to make our own way of drawing better, you know what I mean?
But my biggest tip of all to beginning artists would have to be to believe in yourself and to not get discouraged. Great artists don't start out great, they work hard! So don't let anything discourage you or distract you from really enjoying yourself and making progress. ^^
