Ever since the beginning, since we could remember, we were told we were products of the lab. Someplace they called, The Institute. They told us we were a mixture of human cells and scrabbled genetics, we were just spliced DNA strands mashed together to make one living being. The whitecoats called us Project Alpha, that we were the main focal point of all their experiments. They had others too, similar to us, but yet they were so far distant from human roots, they became feral, they'd kill anything that entered their cages. We were the four successors, caught between fantasy and reality, which is what the whitecoats called science. Nothing came easy for us, we were kept in cages so small that even breathing was hard. Most of our life in the institute was so savage, would couldn't even remember what we did the hour before, much less what we had for breakfast that morning. We had absolutely nothing in a place like this, it was not a home, it was not dwelling, it was hell. As we grew, we did get rewarded with certain things, how we graduated from a cage, to a cell. The white coats kept us together, though we were not all the same, but to be ungrateful for the company was undoubtedly the most idiotic thing that could have been. In spite of our lacking knowledge of the outside world, we were still incredibly intelligent. Somewhere deep in our bones, we knew we didn't belong to the lab, that we were not created, we were born.
We'd always been planning escape, a few times we'd gotten close, always in the spur of the moment had we gotten away, but we were always caught by the shades. The shades were created as workers of the institute, used to keep the experiments in, and other organics out, but what would be stupid enough to come willing into the institute. It was a night that worked to our favor, everyone was gone, gone to their own home, to sleep in their own beds. The power went out, everything was silent except the thundering shaking the building. The storm outside raged war against the integrity of the building. The cell locks shorted out, allowing us escape. We escaped into the fog shrouding the forest. We ran and ran, until the soles of our feet had rubbed raw. That was about four years ago. We held up this long with our act of defiance. When we escaped, it's almost as if we woke up, woke up to our reality, that we finally free.

╚═════════════════╝
Safe and tucked away in a cabin house that resides in the small mountains of Oregon State, the four of us live under the same roof. Which isn't all that great, but not bad either. The only trouble we have, is when the food runs out, where some of us become a little more than grumpy. It can be difficult to feed ourselves at times, where prey is scarce, and the local farmer's market won't accept our offerings of squirrel meat. But somehow we make it through the day without killing each other. In the end we are a team, actually, we call ourselves the blaze. We dabbled with other words, but the blaze stuck.
Being the product of our special experiments... We are quite a bit different from anyone else. Two of us, are angels, believe it or not. Sure we may sport big feathered wings, but it's quite a bit different than being divine creatures. Our wings are those that match our personality. Say you are a stubborn little twit, you'd have giant pigeon wings on your back. It's easy to hide them, just fold them tightly up against the spine and put on a windbreaker. But having giant wings can sometimes be a downside. It's hard to take off from a stand still, it needs a running start, and there is a problem with wing cramps. As for the other two of us. We call ourselves dust. A strange name sure, but it fits us well. We are not lycans, and anyone who calls us that can take it up between our teeth. We can surely change form into a canine, speak to any other animal as either a person or dog. Sometimes our gift triggers without warning in what we call a flash. Our eyes glow, our senses heighten, speed quickens, everything changes in an instant. But this can be very dangerous to us, and may reveal our secret.
The world beyond the mountain, we have never seen, due to our constant hiding from the shades. Creatures sent to hunt us down. They haven't found us yet, but it won't be long before they do. Shades have an unfair advantage against us. We are much stronger than any normal person, but so are they they can stitch their brain into another creature by mere touch and an electrical wave. In that time the consciousness of the creature is shifted into their body, where they are virtually unable to escape until the shade returns to switch out. Fortunately, they can not affect us in that way, which is good, because we would probably be dead already.

XXXXXXXXXXXX Adrenaline. Heart pounding, head spinning, breath fast. My ears pulsed with blood, I could hear my body working all together. Sweat beads my entire body, covered in layers of dirt, and traces of blood. I wasn't even running yet. Shadows of the tree concealed me as my neck hairs prickled in tension as leaves cracked around the other side of my shadowed tree. I held my breath, as the boots made their way toward me, I slowly got to my feet, and launched off the ground, running on the tips of my toes. The chase was on. I kept my breath, then released as I made my way over a fallen log. Adrenaline shot through my veins, coursing hot blood through my entire body. I could hardly hear the hollering behind me as my ears pounded with my blood. I could feel my heart beating out of my chest, as I felt fingers graze my shoulder. If only I could make it to denser woods. I kept going, my bare feet hitting the dry grass, it was getting thinner a bad sign. A wall of thorns appeared through the early morning mist. I wouldn't let myself hesitate. Behind me, canines howled, I could hear the hollering of the shades behind me. I pressed into the thicket, thorns gripped onto my arms and legs, impaling my bare feet as I made my way through. Pain pulled at me, telling me to stop, but I couldn't, my mind kept telling me run... run... faster... I couldn't feel my legs anymore, as I made my way through. My feet hit hard, warm dust and rock. I took a moment to glance. I'd made it to the edge of the lab. I kept moving, my heart wouldn't slow. A tall fence blocked me from further escape. I got to my hands and knees, digging at the bottom. My hands and fingers slicing on the rocks, but still I forced my way. I made a big enough hole, to slide through, just as a Shade grasped my leg. A small shriek exited my throat, as I kicked free, getting to my feet, stumbling for a foot hold. I propelled myself further, trying not to look back to see if they'd caught up, gotten through the fence. My head was spinning to oblivion. I looked over my shoulder, it was a mistake, I would never make again. The shades and dogs were on my heels. My focus went back, just as I stopped at a cliff. My heart beat loudly. If you were me... You would do the same thing. I launched myself off the cliff, but arms ripped me pack to the ground. I was caught. Pain ripped through me, the last thing I saw was a gun coming to my head, a finger wrapped around the trigger and...
A loud desperate scream shot through the house, it awoke me, I sat up in bed, wiping sweat from my head. I looked around, and realized, the shriek had come from me. I close my eyes, It was just a dream... Just a dream... I reassure myself, pulling my blankets up to my nose, taking in a deep whiff, it was the scent of pine and berries. I often tracked it back in from my walk in the woods. Not just a dream... A memory... I close my eyes as the haunting thoughts lay on my mind. The dream wasn't bad... The memory however... Was so much worse. Very faint scars marks my shoulders and arms from the thorns. I sigh, slipping out of the covers and stick my nose in my closet. I pull out a pair of dark skinny jeans, worn out, with a few holes. I pull a loose grey t-shirt from a folded pile of clothes. Fully dressed now, I pulled on my converse, and headed out of my room, braiding my hair into a fishtail. I often woke up around six forty something, it was always the same reason... Nightmares. I close my eyes, letting out a deep breath, hoping that my morning scream hadn't woken anyone, hopefully nobody noticed. It was the first time in three years I had screamed in such terror from a dream. And I felt like a child for it. I walked down the hallway, my eyes caught sight of our height chart, and a picture we all drew together of our 'family'. Elean, Mykie, Laurie, Artemis... We weren't truly related to each other. But it's all we've got... We're family, whether we like it or not.
My mind tracked elsewhere as I made my way to the kitchen. Our home... Modern... Nice... Clean. Somehow we were lucky enough for solar power. But no one knows we live here. I open the fridge door, peering into the metal cold box, not much food was left to consume. Maybe a little deer left, but not much. But thankfully we have plenty of bird eggs to make food. I pull out the remaining deer meat, and the bowl of unbroken eggs. I hold up the small eggs. Some were robin, others were finches. One of them was hawk. There was one time, when making eggs from the various birds, that I had accidentally placed a baby bird into the pan. It was only once, give me a break... It's not like we ate it after that... Okay, I ate it. Food is food, whether we like it or not. I crack the eggs into the pan, slicing up the remaining deer meat and placing it into the pan of eggs. "Have to go hunting soon." I mumble. Hunting was a daunting task, something that was often dreaded by myself. I turn to the fridge, only thing left was old carrots from the farmer stand. I sigh, frying up the eggs, and then place four plates on the island counter. The plates were dished with an apple each, sliced old carrots and the eggs. I sigh, grabbing my plate, looking around with a slight growl as I sat on the floor. A thing I did. I didn't know why though. For a reason I don't know why, chairs just don't appeal to me.

ELEAN♨
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Most nights were the same, toss and turn until one position was the lucky winner for the night and pray that he managed to catch a couple hours of blissful sleep. This one was far from different, but he had woken in the early hours when the only sounds were the onimous creaks the house happened to make every now and then. Elean would never complain over course, any sleep was better than none. He could only ever wish his mind would slow down it's stupid self for awhile and let him be. Maybe he would manage a quick nap later in the day when everyone was doing what they wanted.
Elean had slowly stretched out on of his wings soon after waking. He carefully preened each separate feather, putting them straight and cleaning them carefully. His mind managed to stay quiet for three hours as he fumbled with his wings when a scream shook him out of his zoned state. His wings twitched slightly as he blinked repeatedly and placed who the scream came from. Artemis, his mind supplied as he carefully stood.
Has to be a nightmare. No one knew they were out here, and so he doubted anything got in. Still, never knew. He tried to remember a time he ever heard Artemis scream like that before, and came up blank. He should probably check on her.
Putting on clothes to worn for their own good, and struggling with his shirt for to long like always, he put on a pair of used sneakers, then slipped out of the room. One would be able to tell he had been up for awhile and had not gotten much sleep; the tenseness in his shoulders and tired look in his eyes gave it away. Elean tried to blink himself awake more and relax himself before going further, but wasn't sure to what extent it worked. He quietly walked away from his room, hearing some noise in the kitchen, keeping his wings close to make it easier to navigate through the house. He rounded the corner and found the familiar figure of Artemis on the floor (each of them had their own quirks), followed by the smell of bird eggs. No one else was there, so he assumed they were still in their rooms. Maybe they hadn't woken up from Artemis screaming, or they were up and just getting ready. Elean looked towards the table and noticed the three remaining plates. There wasn't much food, hardly ever was, but he would make sure everyone at least ate their share. Elean walked towards the closest plate and plucked the apple from it, his eyes going back to Artemis as he kept some distance between them.
"You okay?" He asked quietly, voice crisp. He wouldn't push her to answer anything she didn't want to of course, just letting her know he would listen. He took a bite from his apple as he looked back at his plate; the carrots did not look all that appetizing, but food was food he supposed.

Laurie suddenly woke in a cold sweat. A Flash then triggered, and soon after his abrupt awakening Artemis's scream echoed through the cabin. Even if the scream hadn't lasted too long, the heightened senses did not help at all. It felt like his eardrums burst when the shriek wove it's way into his sense-of-sound, and he wished he had been in full-wolf form at that moment so he could at least flatten his ears, thus decreasing the high-pitched wail at least a little bit. Once she had stopped her screaming, Laurie fell out of the bed in a daze, millions of thoughts swirling around in his mind. Had he had a dream? It felt like he was barely grasping onto it, but he couldn't remember any of the details. He presumed he was just imagining things, and that he had had a normal, dreamless night as usual. Now for his hearing. His ears still pounded from the enhanced-scream, and he was still grasping on to what had just happened. Rude awakening aside, he just gave a long, tired sigh and went to the mirror to check himself real quick. His hair was a messy bed-head --as usual--and he could see the last of the glow in his eyes flickering out. Laurie then realized something: his cheeks were wet. Were those tears? He didn't recall crying from the previous day, and though was a bit startled, he just wiped them away and continued getting ready. The fact that they were fresh did bother him a little, as he did not remember anything happening to make him sad. Had he been crying in his sleep? Could that even happen? Laurie tried to not let it bother him too much. He was a pretty jumpy guy, after all, maybe Artemis's scream just startled him to the point of tears was all. Yeah, that must've been it. Shaking off the rough morning, he groggily threw on a plain black shirt and ripped jeans, converse and his beloved zebra-striped hat, but not before sliding his fingers through his hair as a sort of makeshift hairbrush.
After getting ready, Laurie made his way downstairs with a sleepy look still slightly painted on his face. He watched as Artemis and Elean conversed a bit, but didn't pay much attention. Anyone with eyes could see that he was anything but eager to start and/or join in on a conversation, but of course he would at least try if actually spoken to. It was easier to talk around his "family" though, considering they had been basically forced to forge a strong bond ever since they all escaped Hell--err--The Lab. His stomach growled embarrassingly loud, and a light blush was faint on his face. Artemis was preparing breakfast, which hardly looked like enough to satisfy his appetite, and he knew what he had to do: go hunting. Considering the canines Dusts could turn into were already natural-born hunters, it was mainly their job to find food for the group. Laurie didn't especially like to hunt, as he really didn't like to hurt anything innocent, but he knew it had to be done. He decided to just go outside and sit on the front porch for some fresh air, planning on going out to find food soon.

║╚══════════╝ Falling asleep has always been a hard thing for Mykie, but once she fell asleep she was usually sound asleep. All she had to do was get passed the hours of staring up at the ceiling with so many cruel thoughts filling her head. That was the reason she always hated nighttime. She dreaded it most nights, having to lay in the dark and all alone while her thoughts played tricks on her. There are a few times her mind will take the dark and make her fears in the forms of shadows. Last night was one of those nights, she had thought she had seen something in the dark and hid her face under her pillow while silently crying until she had fallen asleep. Luckily nobody else will ever know about her childish actions.
Mykie was sound asleep, lightly snoring and drooling, but when Artemis' scream made its way towards her room. It caused her to jerk awake and her heart to beat fast. She stared at her door for a few seconds so she could try and catch her thoughts. There wasn't any other sound that followed it until a few minutes ago, which was the sound of someone in the kitchen. Poor Artemis, Mykie thought as she slowly started to force herself out of bed. What bothered her the most was that she had never heard the other female scream in her sleep. Thou she just shook her head, as if trying to get rid of her thoughts, as she got ready to face the day before her. Once she stretched her small chickadee wings, she pulled on a some clothes that were worn and faded before she headed out to the kitchen.
As she walked into the kitchen, she realized she was the last one to wake up. Artemis was making breakfast out of what they had left while having a small conversation with Elean. Looking at the food for breakfast, she figured all of them would be hunting or gathering for food. "Good Morning." Mykie said as she grabbed the apple off of the plate she probably would be eating on before looking to find Laurie. After a few seconds, she saw his zebra hat threw the front window sitting on the front porch. Even thou she knew he didn't like socializing, she still felt bad for him being by himself. "Hope it's okay if I sit next to you." She had said but she had sat down before waiting for an answer, probably because she figured he didn't mind. If he did, she would then got sit somewhere else on the porch. Mykie didn't want to leave Laurie all alone, one thing she hated was seeing people lonely. Especially her "family". They were all each other had for friends and family.

XXXXXXXXXXXX The plate in my hands, I just stared and picked through the eggs with my fingers as I began to eat. It wasn't horrible. The deer's meat, admittedly made the eggs much better that just plain. At their own pace, the blaze began to stir. I could feel it in my bones. It wasn't long before I saw Elean enter the kitchen. My eyes scanned him over, when he looked at me, he spoke. And I knew he had heard. Probably the whole house. Which honestly kinda sucked. I close my eyes, thinking carefully about my reply. "I'm fine... Rough night." I spoke softly, I wasn't a liar, I just didn't want to seem weak, so I often go along bluntly.
It wasn't long before Laurie entered the picture, that I had stood up and placed the now empty plate into the sink. I'd be doing the dishes after the hunt I suppose. Unless someone beat me to it. I watched Laurie leave through the door outside, my heart somewhat sinking. We all had to be together, and it was sad to see him walk away from the group. However, I understood. Mykie came down next, and nodded a silent greeting to her. My attention once again returned to Elean and I gave him a faint smile. "Your night?" I ask, in my naturally warm tone. Of course my mind was drifting to the variety of other things. The chores we have to do, the things we have to set up. We may not lead a normal life, and maybe not go through what normal people do, whatever normal is, normal for us was surviving on our own. Without parents, without family, or friends, where we have to watch our back when we go outside to gather food. Where our diet mainly consists of our foraging and hunting abilities. Where we trade kills and various things we find for clothes, and equipment. This was all to keep our family safe from harm. Away from danger's way and path of a flaming vortex. One slip-p could put us on the run. My mind kept dragging me further and further along, before I managed to pull myself back into reality. My gaze soon sharpened on Elean. "I think it's time to hunt before the sun rises completely. If you'd like, you could come along. Gather some wood for fires later in the winter."

Quick and to the point. Elean couldn't blame her, he knew how Artemis felt about appearing weak. He hummed in acknowledgement as he finally began to pick at his portion of eggs, placing his half-eaten apple beside his plate. Elean remained quiet as Artemis began to move around the kitchen, followed by Laurie coming out. Elean glanced towards him and notice Laurie wasn't all to eager to be included in their conversation, and if Elean gave a closed mouth chuckle when Laurie's stomach growled, no one could really blame him. Laurie left out the door soon after, the slight chill from outside making its way in and making Elean's wings twitch.
Elean's attention went to Mykie next as she came down. He simply nodded his head towards her at her greeting, eating the rest of his food, along with those carrots, and putting his plate with Artemis's in the sink. He knew there were more chores to be done, and he would try to his best to help were he could. The front door opened and closed again, and Elean looked to see Mykie go outside with Laurie, he knew that Mykie would be able to keep Laurie company, hopefully they'd be fine though.
"You know, same as every other night I've had. I've been up for awhile though." Elean moved and took a seat at the island, looking at the two other plates set for Laurie and Mykie. Mykie had taken an apple at least, but Laurie had skipped out as soon as he could. They both needed to eat, especially if they were going to be out and about today. He sighed and listened to Artemis as she asked if he wanted to come along. Some times he wouldn't go, and other times he would. It always just depended on his mood and if he needed time to himself that day. He shrugged, "Sure, I'll tag along; give me a chance to maybe stretch my wings and see if anything has gone on nearby. Whenever you and the others are ready, we can all head out." Elean's wings shifted in anticipation and the chance of possibly being able to fly; he didn't get to often with them having to keep a low profile. He wouldn't risk the others being found out, but maybe Mykie and he would be able to.
