Adopt an Aromertis {Grand Opening!}

Postby SairenMin » Mon Sep 20, 2010 4:29 pm

Aromertis
{name is subject to change}

Length: 50cm to 100cm
excluding tail which is nearly same length
Weight: 4lbs. to 8lbs.
depending on season, climate, and fur thickness
Diet: Omnivore
mushrooms, roots, berries, herbs and other plant material
insects, rodents, lizards, eggs, and scavenged meat

Coloration:
Ranges from rust-red to golden brown to gray.
Since domestication unusual colors have appeared
Markings:
Tend to have various skunk markings
Domestication has also brought about new markings

These cute little critters are found in most forests across the world. Each individual Aromertis has unique camouflage on the underside of their tail that allows them to blend in with dead leaves or foliage in the area. Aromertis are naturally shy, especially around humans. When suspicious of danger, they quickly flip their tails over their bodies and bury themselves in leaves or other plant material. Those in colder climates have a winter coat, to keep proper camouflage throughout the year. Other then their methods of camouflage, Aromertis have a few unusual habits that are causing scientist to second guess previous animal studies. They are highly social within a highly organized community. Certain Aromertis will have particular duties, assigned purely by their skills. It is quite common to see one help forage and hunt for those old or sick. Scientists are still uncertain the exact structure and dominance roles within the groups.

Their most peculiar behavior notes to their high intelligence. Each Aromertis will develop an obsession with one particular local plant life, before they reach adulthood. Normally this is an herb, or flower but can range even to mushrooms or grasses. Then they begin to search out this plant, and begin to plant little gardens in tribute. Their continued consumption begins to start a chemical change. The first noticeable difference is their musk gland begins to imitate that particular plant's scent. Soon after their are changes in coloration in their eyes, claws and then fur. Though the changes are subtle, it allows this particular Aromertis to hide amongst its garden in a perfect camouflage.

They have only been discovered now, due to pure chance of one being ensnared in a 'catch and release' trap for a troublesome fox near a farm. Scientists are still debating their classification, though evidence proves they have a strong relation to the mustelid family. However, with the sudden media attention of this new species, the Aromertis, their has been a sudden clamoring to have them as pets. It wasn't long before one couple was successful in raising a young Aromertis. From their, it has been a new upcoming pet yet their natural population could be in danger from all this unwanted attention.
