Alius Telluris, meaning "Different Earth", is a different version of our own planet Earth, located in a parallel universe. Humans have never existed here; in their place are the Alii, an anthropomorphic species. Alii can be found with many different forms and appearances, all resembling animals found on our Earth. These animals, in the feral non-sentient form we know, are still present on Alius Telluris. However, the Alii do not regard the animals they resemble to have any similarities to themselves, and domesticate, feed upon, and interact with them much the same as humans do.
Although different Alii are descended from various different species, as they evolved the different groups came together, eventually melding into one species. The society is still structured focusing on groups- canines will associate mostly with canines, avian species with other avian species. However, interbreeding between groups is not unheard of and hybrids from these pairings, with characteristics from both parent groups, can be found.
On Alius Telluris, approximately one million years ago- more than twice as early as on Earth- primate species began to evolve into the more humanoid structure we know today. As these evolving animals began to rise to the top of the food change, unlike on Earth, other animals began to evolve in the same way to compete. These changes separated the evolving animals from their counterparts, forcing them together and increasing the rate of evolution. Eventually the species melded into one and evolution slowed as the development of civilization began.
In the present, the Alii have developed into a species similar to humans today, with a variety of languages, religions, races, and cultures. Unlike Earth today, they never divided the land into separate countries, but rather vaguely defined regions based on climate.
The society is structured around similar genetic groups, often roughly based on the order or family of the animal the Alii is descended from. Each ‘type’ of animal has left different vestigial traits on the mostly human-appearing Alii. All Alii have eye colors and structure based on the animal. These traits are added onto a basic human structure.
Amphibia- moist, smooth skin similar to that of salamanders or frogs, an elevated need for hydration, no body hair, and usually little hair on the head. Tails, if applicable.
Reptilia- scales on the shoulders, bottom halves of the legs, and sometimes on the tops of the arms. Tongues are usually forked. Tails, if applicable.
Aves- small vestigial wings, each approximately the length of the arm, feathers on the head instead of hair and on the shoulders, very light, porous, usually fragile bones. No tails.
Mammalia- fur on the shoulders and occasionally legs, skin often colored based on markings, sharpened/slightly elongated canine teeth (in Carnivora). Tails, if applicable.
Alii also possess basic behavioral traits from the original species- a wolf Alii will likely be very social and hierarchical, an owl Alii less so and more nocturnal than others. Herbivorous animal Alii usually eat less meat and more plants than carnivorous ones. This being said, there are many cases where the Alii does not exemplify or even demonstrate any of these behaviors. It's not rare to see a deer Alii enjoying a steak, or a vegan crocodile. A snake may be very extroverted and social, or a horse introverted and independent.
