What Are Painted Hyena Dogs?
A hybrid between an African Wild Dog, Hyena and the domesticated dog. PHD's stand between 65 - 90cm tall and weigh in an around 30 - 50 kg's. They can come in a range of colours and patterns, often natural. PHD's can also have a range of manes and different tail types.
PHD's are a domesticated hybrid that makes a loyal companion and do well with the company of another character, whether that be another PHD or some-thing or some-one else. They are never found in the wild and it is very rare they are strays. They can be temperamental with strangers.

Painted Hyena Dog Species Infomation

Species Full Name: Painted Hyena Dog (PHD)
Species Scientific Name: Lycaon Crocuta Lupus (Familiaris)
Domestic Or Wild: Always domesticated; unless found stray.
Powers Or Special Abilities:
Powers or special abilities are near to never found in Painted Hyena Dog.

Species Appearance:
Painted Hyena Dogs are large heavy yet streamlined animals. They have a large rounded head with a strong muscular jaw and sharp carnivorous teeth, There ears are average sized for their body and rounded. They have slender necks that lead down to a deep rounded chest and tucked under belly. Their backs slope down slightly, most carry some type of hair from the top of their head and ending along their back, it's uncommon to find a mane-less Painted Hyena Dog. They have long sturdy legs and a variation of different types of tails. Their bodies are slender in build, longer rather than wider. They carry a downwards falling coat much like a setter type breed, shorter fur at the tops of their body and long feathers falling down at the bottom.

Colorations and Patterns:
Natural colours are the most common; blacks, browns and creams. On rare occasions you will find unnatural coloured Painted Hyena Dog.
All Painted Hyena Dogs will have either spots/patches or stripes/some type of lines. It is very rare you will find one without.

Average Height: 65 - 90cm
Average Weight: 30 - 50 kg

Diet:
Strictly carnivorous however they do often like the taste of human foods. They do require raw meat and bones in their diet however they can instead be fed on a dry pet food made for Painted Hyena Dogs if you don't like the mess.

Personality Traits:
Painted Hyena dogs often require the company of another being, they have a high need to feel as if they are in a pack or clan. They do best partnered with a human as they crave human company. However they can often be slightly hostile towards strangers as they tend to be overprotective but they get on well with their own kind unless they have a reason not to.
They often have the energy and requirement for companionship from the African Wild Dog, the adaptable and fierce nature of the Hyena and the docile and willingness to learn form the dog.

Species Behavior:
  • Dominant: - Head and tail high, ears forward.
  • Submissive: - Head, tail and body low to the ground. May roll on back and whimper.
  • Excited/Greeting A Missed Companion - Tail wagging, wooping (laughing), padding feet and pacing around.
  • Playful - Bowing, tail wagging, wooping (laughing), jumping around and lightly nipping or mouthing in an attempt to start a game.
  • Slightly Stressed/Unconformable - Ears back, panting, restless, alert.
  • Scared - Ears back, snarling, eyes locked onto what they fear (reluctant to turn their backs), tail and bottom end tucked under. More likely to bite than run.
  • Guarding/Protective/I Hate You! - A solid and firm stance, head level with shoulders, snarling/growling, tail held high (may be wagging if feeling excited at the same time), ears forward. They will often take steps forward in an attempt to test how scared their target is; if the target runs, this wil often trigger a chase which could either result in a proud win or the target may get bitten.
  • Apologetic/Saying Sorry - Staying low to the ground, tail tucked but wagging, trying to lick mouth (or hands if a human/human like creature)
  • Lonely/Separation Anxiety - Howling, whining, pacing, being destructive (chewing furniture, pooping/peeing), trying to escape to find who they are looking for.

Hierarchy:
Painted Hyena Dogs often take on a submissive role when it comes to living with a human/human like character. They like to have a controlling master. However when it comes to being in a pack/clan with their own kind, Painted Hyena Dog's often take on a hierarchy consisting of 1 leader and then everyone else (who seem to work out who is dominant/submissive over whoever by themselves).

Breeding:
Painted Hyena Dog's are only able to produce offspring with other Painted Hyena Dogs of the opposite gender but they can be mates with other species or the same gender.
Females can only breed when they come into heat, this happens once a year. Often two Painted Hyena Dogs will not mate unless they have had a strong bond with their partner whom they have often known for a very long time. Although on occasions females will breed with a male that is not her mate if he shows up for the first time when she is in season and she likes him.
Painted Hyena Dog pregnancy lasts around 70 days (just over 2 months.) The female Painted Hyena Dog will often give birth to between 1-5 cubs in a litter. She (and the male if he is present) will both care for the cubs together. Painted Hyena Dogs will tolerate pack/clan mates or others they live with around their cubs but will guard their cubs from anyone else.

Species Evolution:
The species was originally created for the purpose of being both a working animal and a companion. People thought they would make great protection creatures. A scientist began to meddle with the genes of the three species and mix them together. First he created a cross between the domestic dog and the African Wild Dog. The species made a great companion but it was small and was scared too easily by new things. He decided to add Hyena to the genetics, creating the first litter of Painted Hyena Dog. But unlike most lab born animals, the Painted Hyena Dogs were brought up and raised in a family home with other animals in order to test the new creature out.
Many years later; selectively breeding from the most suitable animals; the Painted Hyena Dogs were finally ready to be adopted as pets.

Random Facts:
  • They like constant companionship.
  • They get on well in all climates.
