What are Pomletts?
╚════════════╝
_____Pomletts look like ferrets but have plants for tails. Their base fur colors and patterns are similar to those of ferrets, but they can also have stripes or spots in unnatural colors. These stripes and/or spots are called Stains. They can either have an entire plant for their tail, which is called a Plant Tail, or just the part of the plant that contains the seeds, which is called a Seed Tail. For example, a Pomlett can have an entire apple tree for their tail or just an apple. If a Pomlett has a Seed Tail, the base of the tail is furry and then it ends in the portion of the plant that holds the seed. Some Pomletts who have a Seed Tail may have more than one tail, which is called Multiple Seed Tail. For example, a Pomlett can have three apple tails instead of just one apple tail. If a Pomlett has a Multiple Seed Tail, the base of the tail is furry and the tail splits off into two or more of the portion of the plant that holds the seed.╔═══════╗
Diet
╚═══════╝
_____Pomletts are herbivores. They will eat fruits, vegetables, legumes, grains, nuts, seeds, etc. Basically any part of a plant that is edible and nontoxic, they will eat it. Wild Pomletts will forage for food all day long, but domestic Pomletts will be content to eat regularly twice a day. Don't be surprised if you catch a domestic Pomlett begging for some of your salad while you're eating it around them, though!╔══════════╗
Size & Weight
╚══════════╝
_____Female Pomletts are thirteen to fifteen inches long from the nose to the base of the tail and weigh one to three pounds. Male Pomletts are fifteen to seventeen inches long from the nose to the base of the tail and weigh three to five pounds. The size of their tails is not related in any way to the size of the actual plant their tail is based on. For example, a Pomlett with a Plant Tail that is a Cherry tree has a tiny Cherry tree for a tail.╔════════════╗
Habitats in the Wild
╚════════════╝
_____The geographical range of wild Pomletts originally ranged from southern Canada down through the United States to Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona. This correlates with the geographical range of prairie dogs, whose deserted burrows wild Pomletts use for their own families. The habitats found in this range included mountain grassland, semi-arid grassland, mixed-grass prairie, shortgrass prairie, desert grassland, shrub steppe, and sagebrush steppe. Unfortunately, the amount of wild Pomletts has drastically decreased over the years due to habitat loss. There are only about four hundred wild Pomletts left, most of which are found in Texas and New Mexico.╔══════════╗
Temperament
╚══════════╝
_____Pomletts are intelligent, yet silly, creatures who love to be social with both humans and other Pomletts. They have spurts of spastic energy and then crash into a deep sleep that is hard to wake them up from. Exploration is one of their favorite activities because they are super curious, but they should be supervised because they can be very mischievous and get into anything and everything. Objects small enough for them to carry will be snatched and hidden in what is called their Stash. They will try to squeeze themselves into any small space, but this can be disastrous as some Pomletts have large tails that may not fit along with the rest of their body. Many Pomletts enjoy bouncing, hopping, rolling, shaking, and dancing while out and about.╔═══════════╗
Colors & Patterns
╚═══════════╝
_____Pomletts have base fur colors and patterns similar to those of ferrets, but they can also have stripes or spots in unnatural colors which are called Stains. The Base Fur Colors, in order from most dominant to least dominant, are: Sable, Black Sable, Chocolate, Dark Eyed White, Champagne, Cinnamon, Silver, and Albino. The Base Fur Patterns, in order from most dominant to least dominant, are: Standard, Roan, Siamese, Blaze, and Panda. Mitts are another Fur Pattern, but their genetics differ from the rest of the Patterns. A Pomlett can either have No Mitts or Mitts, with No Mitts being more dominant than Mitts. The Stains, in order from most dominant to least dominant, are: Missing Stain, Stripes, Spots, and both Stripes + Spots. Stripes and spots can come in any shape, size, variation, amount, etc. This means that a Pomlett might have stripes similar to a zebra or spots like those of a leopard or even both! Some Pomletts also have no stripes or spots at all, which is called Missing Stain.--------

Dominant & Recessive Physical Traits
╚══════════════════════╝
_____Like all animals, Pomletts reproduce genetically by passing on their genes to their offspring. We know some of the genetic sequences of Pomletts that produce certain genotypes, and because of this there can be some speculation as to how a Pomlett's offspring will turn out. We can use Punnet squares to help us determine the possible phenotypes of offspring between two Pomletts. The best way to get a desired outcome in the offspring is by taking a look at the genotypes of two Pomletts and seeing whether the pair might produce the desired outcome. However, one has to also take into account that some genes are dominant and some are recessive.Genetic Codes
Note: The higher on a list a code is, the more dominant it is in comparison to the ones below it.
For example, Sable is the most dominant Base Fur Color and Albino is the least dominant Base Fur Color.

_____If you don't understand how genetics work, don't worry! You will still be able to enjoy adopting, breeding, and dressing up your Pomletts! The only time genetics will be used is when artists go to breed two Pomletts together. Every Pomlett has a Pedigree posted in the first post of their thread that lists the Pomlett's name, owner, gender, birth date, size, parents, siblings, genetic codes, and hex codes. When two Pomletts are bred, the genetic codes are put into Punnet squares, and the results are (mostly) randomized. (Note: The only time results are changed is if the resulting designs/colors clash.) However, if you are interested in learning about genetics feel free to PM rainbowpanda101! She will be happy to answer any and all questions regarding genetics to the best of her ability.╔═══════════╗
Hierarchy
╚═══════════╝
_____A group of Pomletts is called a Crop, but Crops do not have a defined hierarchy. Crops may have one or two highly aggressive Pomletts who bully everyone else, one or two highly submissive Pomletts who submit to everyone, and a number of individuals who are neither highly aggressive nor highly submissive. The highly aggressive Pomletts are higher on the social ladder, the highly submissive ones are lower on the social ladder, and the others are all in between. Not all Crops are the same, however. Some may have more, fewer, or no highly aggressive or highly submissive Pomletts. This is the same for both wild and domestic Crops.╔═══════════╗
Breeding & Babies
╚═══════════╝
_____Several times a year, female Pomletts will go into heat. Males will know when a female is in heat by her scent. If a female lives in a Crop with only females, she will leave to go and find a male elsewhere. Once a female finds a male, there are no ritual dances or anything fancy. The female and male will simply sniff and groom each other for a bit before the female makes her decision. If she decides to mate with the male, she will offer herself and then leave when it's over. If not, she'll just leave to search for a different male. If a female lives in a Crop with one or more males, she has nothing to worry about because the males will copulate with all of the females who go into heat.
_____Wild Pomletts do not mate for life. They can have a multitude of partners throughout their lives, and sometimes they may have more than one partner a year since the females go into heat multiple times throughout a year. Mating in the wild is done strictly to make babies. Domestic Pomletts, however, may or may not mate for life. It is not uncommon for females to be bred with different males each time, but some owners may realize that their Pomletts don't want that. Having two males or two females as "mates" is not unheard of in domestic Pomletts, as well. However, it is impossible for two males or two females to produce babies.
_____Litters are small and range from one to four offspring. Wild females will make nests in their dens out of grasses, moss, bird down, or anything else soft. Domestic pregnant Pomletts should be given a nesting box lined with soft fabric, and she and the babies should be provided with a cage that is safe for the squirmy young Pommies. Simply lining the box with cardboard along the bottom and up the sides should keep the tiny youngsters secure. Make sure to take your Pomletts to the vet while they are pregnant so that you are sure they are healthy and ready to have their babies!
