can anyone draw deer?

Postby Kirarya » Tue Sep 30, 2014 8:46 am

because obviously i can't. D:

guys i need help. i've needed a new fursona for a while now,
and i finally decided i was ready to make one. i decided i wanted
her to be a deer, but failed to realise just one little detail:
i cannot draw deer for the life of me.

the above is based off of this picture for reference, and about
as good as i could get. so would anybody be willing to help me out
and redline the anatomy i have down so far? i'll try to make it
worth your while if you do!

also i need to make the body like overall a tab bit smaller
so her antlers will actually fit on the page too. and her anatomy
doesn't have to be perfect because i'm actually going to end up
making her look a bit horse-like anyway.

any help would be appreciated! ♥

Hi!
This looks great so far and would definitely pass for a deer~
I think the first and only mistake would be your reference. Don't use other people's practice drawings as a guide! ^^
There's plenty of (free for use) stock photos on deviantart and in other places, even google image search can be helpful to view something at different angles.
I'm not particularly good at any species but I do draw a wide range including animals I've never heard of before!
Hopefully this might help you? =3

The first thing that stood out to me is the body.
Looking at deers they have very square bodies, horses do too but tend to have a bit of a rounded belly instead.
Here's a great example.
Notice how the back is very, very flat - from the butt until the neck where it sharply rises upwards.
You can add some slight variations by rounding the spine or belly, using different neck lengths/angles, however the front and back part should stay equal.

Here's other helpful tutorials: x x
Other than that I think it looks great! ^^

thank you so much for the advice! i used the first anatomy
reference that google provided me with, but will definitely
be more aware of what references i use in the future! that's
something i've never really considered since i tend not to use
references for the most part. c:

and thank you for the critique, i really appreciate it! the
tutorials are helpful and so are your comments about the
back - i'll fix that all up when i have the chance.

thank you again! i appreciate your input~
