CHAPTER ONE - LIFE AS A KITTEN.

CHAPTER ONE - LIFE AS A KITTEN.

The flicker of a light on a street burned in the late evening sun. The moon was starting to rise and the sky had turned into a royal navy colour. A black stray walked across the street path, her tail low to the ground and her head hung low. She had a huge tummy, full with four kittens. The black she-cat needed to find somewhere to stay for the night, as always. She had been a stray all her life and was just entering her senior years. She had been covered by multiple toms through her life, the offspring either died or lived, it's a better chance to live when you are a pet, sheltered by humans, but when you live on the streets, you are more likely to get diseases and fall. Every night this cat had to find a new home, in fear of humans and other cats, she was always on the move. She soon came to a cardboard box beside the road, she quickly bounded in and curled up, her tail rested over her nose.

The next morning, the black cat had four tiny kittens suckling at her belly. She had given birth last night after midnight. The tiny kittens pawed at her tummy, longing for milk. The oldest was a long haired black she-cat, the biggest of the litter, a ginger tom was born after, followed by another ginger tom, the youngest was a little tortoiseshell she-cat. As the kittens suckled and mewed, their mother purred, sweeping them close to her protectively if humans ventured close and peeked in. “You will all be mighty fine cats some cay.” their mother purred, licking their pelts clean. Everything was peaceful, for now.

Five weeks later, the kittens were up on their feet and bounding about playfully. Their mother decided it was time to move and helped them out of the box they lived in. She nudged them forward and the family hobbled along the path. The kittens were more interested in playing than walking and whenever the black she-cat pounced on the tortoiseshell, they rolled off the curb and onto the road, “Smudge! Raven! Stop now!” their mother called in distress, Smudge's brothers stopped playing and watched what happened.

Smudge and Raven didn't hear their mother and once Raven eventually pinned Smudge down, a car flew past them, tearing a bit of Smudge's fur off, Smudge wailed, “Get off me!” she cried as Raven clambered off. Suddenly the silhoutte of a huge shiny black car could be seen through Smudge's orbs, she looked horror-stricken, Raven swatted her, “Run Smudge!” she cried and the two Kittens ran to the path. Their mother nudged Raven's two brothers onto the road and dashed over with them, but a huge bus sudden roared on, crashing over the three cats, “Mother, no!” Smudge cried in horror, looking over their dead bodies sadly, this would be the start of a hard life to these two felines.
