quinn hamilton. a unique name, a unique woman. born in april, 1990, to an award-winning chemist and world-renowned neurobiologist, quinn played with test tubes and bunsen burners as other girls might play with dolls or plastic horses. she showed her intelligence early on, learning basic math concepts such as multiplication, division, and fractions at the age of five. after several years of moving after only a few months of living in one place, a lab accident involving quinn and both of her parents occurred. both her mother and father were killed, but quinn managed to survive the worst of the damage. when an explosion involved gamma radiation came to shield's attention, they immediately put quinn on their radar. while no green rage monster occurrences happened regarding quinn, she was affected by the radiation. shield recruited her at age seventeen in order to prevent any potential accidents involving civilians. after the hulk-creating accident bruce banner had, shield has been keeping a close eye on quinn. currently working as a field agent sent on missions, though never without others alongside her, quinn has never once thought that she may be any different from the other agents.

quinn is the very definition of extrovert. she loves to talk and meet new people. in social situations, quinn is always the one getting to know everyone in the room. friendly and humorous, she can usually be found making someone laugh or befriending another. quinn's insecurities are well-hidden by her confident nature. as a child, she was teased constantly because of her “nerdiness”, as the other children put it, and while she never did much to hide her exceptional intelligence she was also greatly ashamed of it. mostly a loner in her school years, quinn adopted a much more outgoing nature when she was in an environment where she was encouraged, not taunted. at shield, she was even lauded for her intelligence. such words she is proud of, but still she harbors uncertainties and what-ifs that can get in the way. frequented by nightmares during the night from the horrific laboratory accident when she was eleven, quinn has learned and adapted to function fully on four hours of sleep or less. she is a perfectionist, willing to redo something over and over until she does it absolutely perfectly.

quinn is of no exceptional appearance. she is a bit taller than normal, at 5'10, but is the average weight for her height and bears only muscle on her shoulders and thighs. possessing speed but not stamina, quinn can run in extremely fast bursts lasting at most ten seconds. along her spine and across her back are numerous scars from flying debris and burn scars cross her shoulders and the backs of her upper legs. these scars aren't visible, though, and what of them can be seen are only on days she wears short-sleeved shirts or a pair of shorts. quinn's hair is think, blonde, and wavy, a nightmare on humid days but otherwise neatly arranged on her shoulders. her eyes are dark blue, her face dotted with freckles from her days in the sun. quinn seems like she belongs on the beach in california, but she'd much rather be in washington dc, working with her fellow agents to keep the peace.

Lois groaned lightly as she burrowed deeper and deeper into her bed, a lazy sight escaping from her lips as she tried to cover her head with her pillow in a futile attempt to block out the invading sunlight that was streaming through her open curtains. Last night had been a long one, because Lois had stayed late at the Daily Planet to finish a story, and just barely made her deadline. At any extent, the day had come far too soon, and she simply wasn't ready for it. "Journalism wait for no-one," she groaned into her pillow before swinging her legs over the side of the bed and onto the ground. Slowly she shuffled to the kitchen where she started to brew a fresh cup of coffee. As she waited for the coffee, she headed back into her bathroom for a quick shower before getting dressed. When at last Lo felt presentable, she snatched her bag off the counter, grabbed her mug of coffee and headed out the door.
---
At the Planet, Lois got straight to work. Her day quickly became a flurry of papers and reviews, layouts and interviews. However, somewhere along the line, Lo felt her stress level mounting, and she quickly escaped to the roof for a breath of semi-fresh air. As she stood up on the roof and gazed out across the Metropolis skyline, she felt something strange shift in the air around her. Lo always new that strange things happened in Metropolis, especially with that strange new red-caped superhero in town, but something felt seriously off. Just as Lo decided that it might be best to head back inside before anything bad happened, she was hit with a sudden wave of nausea that sent her reeling. It felt as though she had just stepped off a roller coaster, and the entire world swam in and out of focus. Quickly, she squeezed her eyes shut hoping that would lessen the feeling and for a moment more, she stood still, doubled over, and clutching her head. However, just as soon as it had come one, the feeling stopped. Slowly, Lois opened her eyes, expecting to be greeted by the familiar skyline of Metropolis, but only to be met with an entirely new view. She appeared to be standing on a crowded street in a bustling city that certainly was not where she had been just a minute ago. Dazed, confused, and sporting a serious headache, she turned to the nearest passer by, opened her mouth to ask where she was, and promptly threw up on his shoes.

The sun had not yet risen in the sky by the time that Bucky had left the Hydra safehouse. For about a month now, he had been bouncing from location to location, always making very certain not to get caught. It seemed like only yesterday that he had fought his former best friend, it feel like only moments had passed since he had dragged the limp form of the first Avenger out of the water. It had been hard to say the least, but the past couple of weeks had given him time to start finding parts of his past to piece together. Slowly he had retraced his steps and fought to regain his memory in to the best of his ability. His life had become an odd routine of getting up in the morning, leaving where ever he had been staying, going to the library or tracking down old acquaintances of his, finding some sort of dinner, moving onto the next abandoned Hydra safehouse, and going to bed. Every day had started to blur together, but as his present became more and more distorted, his past became more and more clear. However, today he had started out earlier usual, and headed towards the city. The library would't open for quite some time, so he found that he had unexpected time on his hands to spend however he might choose. He decided to go where ever his feet carried him. Pretty soon, he found that he was strolling through the park, hands shoved deep into his pockets, with a thick jacket covering his metal arm. The air was cool and crisp, and Bucky inhaled deeply, trying, and failing, to remember the last time that he had taken a walk through the park. As he continued to move along the winding paths, he let his mind drift to a happier time when things weren't nearly as complicated. In an odd way, he missed Hydra in this regard. Things had been so simple, so clear. Now, everything was a mess. And Bucky had the nagging feeling that Steve was the only one who might be able to put everything back together. "Till the end of the line," he laughed quietly under his breath. With another small sigh he headed out of the park and towards the library.

steve woke up with the sun, as he always does. some days he spends hours tossing and turning in the bed, sick with anxiety and worry. ever since the winter soldier's disappearance, he can't stop wondering about bucky's whereabouts. even after weeks of searching, every time they seemed like they were getting closer to him he slipped out from under their noses. tugging a shirt on over his head, steve leaves his apartment and hits the sidewalk running. he's found it helps clear his head, especially on the mornings after restless nights. as he passes the reflection pool facing the jefferson memorial, he can just make out the form of another person. probably sam, out for his own morning jog. but today steve doesn't come up on his left, instead carrying on in the opposite direction. he needs time to collect his thoughts before he can face the triskelion and the members of the ragtag team he's assembled to help him find the winter soldier. his aimless running takes him farther into downtown, past the smithsonian museums. he briefly catches his own attention; the captain america exhibit is still in full swing in the national aerospace museum, it seems, even though it's been open three months now.

after an hour of nonstop movement, steve finally slows down to a walk. a thin sheen of sweat covers his forehead and drips from his temples down his cheeks. pausing to get his bearings, he crosses the street and heads in the triskelion's direction. whatever lingering thought about bucky he may have he quickly replaces with another. now is not the time for sentiment. he must not have been paying much mind to his surroundings, because when a strange woman throws up her breakfast onto his shoes it certainly catches his attention. "ma'am, are you alright?" steve puts a hand on her shoulder, gently guiding her to a nearby bench and seating her down on it. looking around, he spies a nearby cafe and grabs a napkin and glass of water off of the patio with a quick mumbled apology. he rubs the napkin on the condensation of the glass, offering it to her cool side up. steve presses the glass into her hands. "take this. do you need help?"

when quinn awakens, her neck hurts something awful. she lifts her head stiffly, wondering for a moment where she is. she moves her hand to push her hair out of her face and accidentally knocks a book to the floor. with a groan, quinn realizes she fell asleep on top of an open history book with dozens of others stacked around her. yawning, she squints at the page in front of her. james buchanan barnes, born 1917, served as a sergeant in the 107th infantry, as well as serving under steve rogers as a howling commando. of course. steve had sent her to search the books for any trace of hydra and their weapons. naturally, she had started at the nearby library. glancing out of the window, she is grateful it isn't half past noon. rather, the sun has only just poked up over the horizon. quinn's stomach growls loudly, disturbing the otherwise dead silence of the library. she picks up the books that had been helpful in some shape or form and hugs them to her chest. in total, the load must've weighed twenty pounds between only three books.

quinn checks out the books hastily, avoiding the librarian's judging gaze as he stamps the books. the smallest, steve rogers: american hero, she carries at the top of the stack. she's slightly embarrassed to be seen scurrying out of a library at eight in the morning with nothing but books on the howling commandos and captain america, but thankfully not many people are out yet. quinn, being the human disaster she is, has the books slip out of her grasp three times. she swears under her breath each time, picking them up as they skitter across the pavement. by the time i get to the triskelion, it'll be a wonder if all of these tomes are in one piece, quinn thinks irritably to herself.

Lois groaned once more, clutching her head as the world swam in and out of focus. Just seconds ago she had lost her breakfast, and it certain wasn't doing anything to quell her growing headache. Weakly she let herself be guided to a bench, and seated, but before she could open her mouth to apologize [or throw up again] the mysterious man was already gone. "Figures," she groaned lightly. Lois braced her hands on the edges of the bench and inhaled deeply twice, the fresh air filling her lungs and effectively calming her down. Feeling slightly better, she started slight when she found that a cool glass of water was being pushed into her hands, along with a cool napkin. Immediately she gulped the water down, relishing the cool refreshing taste with an appreciative sigh. "Thanks," she smiled up at the poor man that she had so ungracefully disturbed. When he questioned her if she was alright, Lois laughed lightly and placed the glass down onto the park bench next to her. "Oh, yes. I'm fine now. Sorry about that, by the way," she responded, shooting a glance at his shoes. "I'm normally a much better conversationalist. Just a bit of umm...vertigo," she lied smoothly, shooting her savior a quick smile. The gears in her head were already moving at full force as she forced herself to stay calm and figure out where she was. It was obvious that she wasn't in Metropolis anymore, but she sure as hell wasn't going to ask the blonde runner where they were. She seemed crazy enough already, and besides she wasn't exactly sure how to slip it into the conversation. "But I'm feeling much better now," Lois continued as she got to her feet, smoothed her skirt down and smiled once more at her blonde hero. "See? Good as new!" she exclaimed lightly, giving the blonde a slap on the shoulder. Almost immediately she winced as her hand cried out protest; hitting the runner felt like hitting a brick wall.

Bucky headed towards the nearest library through streets full of the bustling with city life. I missed this he thought looking at the stream of faces that moved past him. People going to their jobs, people on their phones, people in general. He missed being around people that he wasn't going to kill, he missed being around people who didn't look at him like a science experiment gone wrong. It wasn't as through he remembered what it was like to lead a normal life. Not fully at least. But every now and then he would get flashes of feeling, brought on by the strangest things. He contemplated this on his way to the library, hands tucked into his pockets, head covered in a hood. As he neared his destination, he caught sight of a girl heading out of the library. Her blond hair was a mess, and it was obvious from the bags under her eyes that she was in desperate need of sleep. In her arms, she carried a small stack of books that kept slipping out of her grasp and onto the floor. Bucky watched, amused, before at last he moved over to her as her books fell for a third time. Noticing one that had been left on the ground, Bucky bent down to pick it up to place it back on her stack of books. However he paused when the title caught his eye. Steve Rogers:American Hero winked up at him, the laminated cover of the book catching a slight glare from the sunlight. The title may have drawn his attention, but the cover photo of Steve posing heroically keeps it. For a split second Bucky is captivated by his friend's face as he is taken back to a time when they were just boys. They were joking around, imitating their favorite comic book heroes when Steve had struck a pose similar to the one on the cover. Not even ten and skinnier than a stick, Steve hadn't been very intimidating, but in that second Bucky had seen it. He had seen the hero Steve would become. For a second more he regarded the cover before handing the book back to the girl and giving her gentle nod.

steve looks at the strange woman skeptically. not one to pry, though, he stands and offers her a hand up. "you sure you'll be alright? next guy you throw up on might not be so friendly." he says, reaching for the water glass and pouring the little bit left in it on his shoes. her overbearing friendliness and insistence on her healthiness waves a red flag. steve is becoming a bit suspicious, but not enough to break through his polite nature. as far as he knows, the woman is just some random person who happened to eat a bad shrimp. but she could also be someone sent to take him somewhere, especially somewhere hydra controls. his internal conflict is making him more and more uncertain of what to do. leaving her without explanation would be rude, but involving himself too much could jeopardize the safety of the remnants of shield. steve opts to stay quiet, even when she smacks him on the shoulder. most mornings don't end up with him having to buy new shoes. maybe quinn has made some miraculous discovery at the library. maybe phil coulson isn't actually dead. at this point, steve wouldn't doubt either of those things occurring.

quinn's arms already have bruises on them from her clutching them so tightly in an attempt to stop them from falling. a stranger man's sudden kindness in retrieving a fallen book for her takes her by surprise. "thank you, sir," quinn says with a tired smile. noticing his lingering gaze on captain's picture, she glances up at him. "you a fan of his? dumb question, i guess most people are nowadays." lord knows how many times the three little kids in the apartment next to hers have woken her up in the night with their constant banging around, shouting at each other and hitting each other with their plastic shields. quinn sees them with their mom on occasion in the lobby of the building. at least one is always wearing a captain america shirt. she refrains from telling the three girls that she sees steve rogers on a daily basis, thanks to the director's sudden inclination to put her on his mission to find the winter soldier.

Lois chuckled light at his comment, before responding, "I think I'll take my chances. I'm a big girl!" as she massaged her sore hand.As she did, she contemplated the best way to figure out where she was, and decided that it would probably be smartest to head to the nearest phone booth and sent a quick call to Perry or Jimmy at the Daily Planet. However, as she discreetly smoothed her hands over her shirt and pencil skirt, she came to the rather unfortunate conclusion that before her little trip, she had failed to bring with her any sort of money or identification. She mentally chastised herself for not being prepared, though even she had to admit that her trip had been rather unexpected. Okay, time to think of a new plan, she thought silently as she stood there awkwardly smiling up at her new acquaintance, before stating in a manner-of-fact way, "Well I can't say that this was the best way to meet someone, but hey! That's life! So thank you again for all of your help, and once again I am so sorry about you shoes, but I really must be off," she laughed as she turned to walk away. "Oh! And send to the cleaning bill to Lois. Lois Lane, 245 Winter Lane, Metropolis, New York" she informed the runner with a wink. Feeling much better about her situation, Lois turned on her heel and started to head in the opposite direction.

Bucky felt the shadow of a smile ghost across his fact when the girl questioned if he was a fan of the Captain's. If only you knew he wanted to respond, but instead opted for a simple, "Well yes, I guess that you could say that. I am a bit of a fan." The girl looked a little bit beyond tired, and he felt a small pang of sympathy for her. "So, what about you? Are you a fan?" he questioned lightly, eyeing that stack of books that the girl cradled in her bruised arms. Though he hadn't noticed it at first glance, most of then appeared to be Captain America books. The girl was obviously not a high schooler so he quickly ruled out using the books for any sort of school report, but she looked young enough to be in college. As he quickly studied her face, he felt a sinking feeling in his gut as he suddenly felt his years of training getting to his. For all that he knew of the stranger, she could very well be a Hydra agent sent to drag him back to his own personal brand of hell. Or, she could be a Shield agent, working with Steve to try and find him. It wasn't as though he wasn't eager to see his friend, but after all that had happened in the past months he wasn't sure of their relationship anymore. He wasn't sure of anything anymore, but he didn't know what he would do if Steve or Shield tracked him down. As he mulled this over in his head, he discreetly angled his head down towards the pavement, so as to slightly obscure his face.

metropolis? steve may have been frozen for seventy years, but he knows for a fact there is no such place as metropolis. "uh, ma'am? there's no place called metropolis that i know of. and i've lived in new york my whole life. you're positive you didn't hit your head on something somewhere?" now, he's getting a tad concerned. a strange woman just drops in out of nowhere, taking about fantasy cities and whatnot. it's all a bit much for steve. he watches her turn with a baffled face but says nothing more. he's in over his head as it is, why get involved more with this lois lane and get sidetracked from the task at hand? but still, steve is curious about the woman and her ramblings on about the metropolis. at this point, he just wants to know what the dickens she talking about. but, judging by their brief previous exchanges, finding out what this mysterious metropolis is or where it is might not be so easy.

"yeah, i am. cap's a nice guy. of course, just from what i've seen, his friend bucky was a pretty great guy too. they all were, him and the howling commandos. you've probably heard about the winter soldier thing, i guess," quinn says, perking up a bit now that she has a set subject of conversation. now, how to beat around the bush enough to not give away her entire mission. "poor guy. from what i've heard, he was basically hijacked. awful, really, that human beings torture other human beings into doing their bidding." quinn's tone is light and colloquial, a mask she's mastered over the months of having to be tight-lipped about hydra and bucky barnes. this unexpected yet welcome encounter is her chance to see what the general public knows about the winter soldier, if they really know much more than he had a metal arm. quinn shifts the books in her arms, the corners poking her ribs rather painfully. "shield's in ruin, apparently, and that organization called hydra went off of the radar. if the news can be believed, which isn't usually the case. i'd love to get a look at their facilities, see how they got so much power out of nowhere. fascinating, in a twisted sort of way."

Lois froze as she let 'there's no place called Metropolis' sink in, her panic beginning to readily mount. Trying to remain calm, she whirled back around to face the runner, her eyes narrowing as she searched his face for any sign that he was lying. Upon seeing that his face was completely serious, she felt her stomach sink. Before, her situation certainly hadn't been fun, but at least she had some sort of way to get home. But now? Now she felt nothing but fear as she marched closer to the man, and stated, "I didn't hit my head. I'm certain. But what do you mean there's no Metropolis? How can there be no Metropolis? My house is there. My job is there. My sister is there. Everything is there." As she talked, her words started to speed up, and she felt cool panic seep through her veins and numb her head. "I need to get back. As soon as possible. I don't know what happened, I just-" she cut of as she choked on her words. Shakily, she headed back to the bench and sat down as she inhaled deeply. How can there be no Metropolis? was all she could think as she tried to retrace her steps from the day to figure out exactly what had happened. It certainly did her no good that she didn't have any identification on her to back up her story. She had even left her press pass sitting on her desk back at the Daily Planet.

Bucky listened patiently to the girl as she chatted about the winter soldier [or was it him? He really didn't know anymore]. While she was talking he kept his head slightly angled down, trying to be as inconspicuous as possible. When she mentioned his hijacking he cringed slightly, all of his awful memories starting to rise to the surface. If only you knew hoe horrible people really could be. She certainly sounded like she knew what she was talking about, and he perked up slightly when she mentioned Shield and Hydra. He might not be the best at keeping up with the news, but from what he had seen, the whole thing was was being covered up by the government, and wasn't very televised. Immediately, alarms when off in his head as he raised it to scrutinize the girl's face. He was certain that was wasn't in High School, or college for that matter, but she was old enough to be a Hydra agent. Immediately, he felt his instincts kick in as he furiously ran through a mental list of Hydra agents, trying to place her face. However, he couldn't recall a young blonde female field agent that would have stuck around after the destruction of Hydra long enough to track him down. None of them were that loyal. So as to not arouse suspicion, he smiled lightly, and responded, "Well it certainly is a mystery, that's for sure. Where did you learn all this again?" he questioned, cocking his head to the side with an innocent smile. "You seem to be really into it," he chuckled lightly.
