The world seems to be covered in snow, and all you see as you look around yourself is snow and the odd spot of green where an evergreen isn't fully covered by the white powder. You wonder if perhaps you should have ignored the pup downstream and not listened to his story. It seems he has lied to you, after all.
It had sounded amazing, though! The way he'd described the clearing with the stream running through it and the giant snow cave. That wasn't what had really caught your interest, though. No, he'd told you a story of games and prizes and fun that awaited those that were brave enough to venture out into the forest and away from the river in the winter. You couldn't help but have been curious, and you'd ventured into the forest enough times in the other seasons that you knew your way for the most part. So you'd left the chilly waters of the river and made your way into the trees.
As you began to consider turning around, the trees opened up before you, revealing a sight that almost took your breath away. It was exactly as the pup had described! There was a stream running along the side, its edges starting to freeze over but the middle flowing quickly enough that it remained untouched by the ice. On the far side the wind had blown the snow up into a giant bank. It was far taller than you, and was actually rather intimidating.
If there was a giant snow cave, that would be a good place for it, you knew. But there didn't seem to be any way in that you could see from where you were. After a moments hesitation, you made your way over and looked around your breath misting the air before you. Despite your thick fur, it was cold, and you were beginning to wish for the warmth of your den with the rest of your family.
As you made your way around the side, a hole opened up in the snow before you. It was just large enough to squeeze through with your fins down and head ducked, but you make it inside. The warmth instantly hits you, and you enjoy it for a moment. An otter appears before you, startling you with her sudden arrival.
"Hello, and welcome!" a snowy-looking finned otter greets you. She appears to have only just come in from the cold as well.
You hesitate, unsure of what to say to this stranger.
"You must be here for the otter games!" she says cheerfully.
You nod slightly, looking around the rest of the cave. You realize then that you're not alone. The cave is warm because there are several other otters already there, though there focus seems to be on the wall.
"Perfect!" she continues. "I'm Aspen and I'm in charge of the games! To get started, you should check out the wall over there." When she recognizes the look of confusion on your face, she adds, "All the rules and information is on the wall."
You nod and head over to check out this wall. As you draw closer you can see the writing scratched into the snow wall, the shadows inside the scratches making it easier to read.
