I think the main reason people use a very dark grey is so it doesn't blot the lineart.
Otherwise you might not be able to see certain features.
Thats why I use it.
Also, if you use Black, you can't use shading.
So it limits some artistic aspect of the piece, and people can still interpret a dark grey as black.

well, if i were shading i would mess it up, so, i'd rather use black. im fine if some of my colored in or created art is blotched out, so *shrugs*
