Creature Name:
Dovanian Horned Equids
(pronounced: Doe-van-e-an Horn-d E-quid-s)
Name Meaning:
There isn't one, I just made it up
Life Span:
Up to 50 years, but males tend to die younger than females due to their constant battles with eachother
Homeland:
The Equids live on an island called Dovan, which was named after the explorer who had first found it. The island is located in the South Pacific Ocean, roughly 3,000 miles off the coast of Peru near the equator where its constantly warm.
Habitat:
The island is similar to most tropical islands, long stretched out beaches with clear blue water, thick forests that can hide prey and predators alike, large grassy planes encircling a huge mountain that is in the center of the island. The Equids love the grassy plains, but doesn't mind the thick forests or the sandy beaches, they don't really like the rocky sides of the mountain though, their hooves aren't built for sharp rocks just soft grass and sand.
Diet:
The Equids are omnivores, but primarily eat meat to keep energized and strong, the plants and grasses on the island tend to be poisonous so they stick to meat. They are immune to most poisons and infection, which allows them to eat some of the plants, but they taste foul and aren't as enjoyable as fresh meat.
Apperance:
The Equids are an odd species. They are a mixture of lizard, horse, ram (in males), armadillo, rhino, and a bit of cat. They are mostly equine with the body, head and legs of a horse, but their tails are of a lizard and can be used as a weapon if needed. Both genders have sharp fang-like saber teeth that are similar to a Sabertooth Tiger in ancient times, but males tend to have straighter fangs while the females have more curved ones. There are horns on both gender's noses, a large one with a smaller one behind it, but males have longer and sharper horns while the females have shorter and duller ones. Instead of a mane, the Equids have armor-like plates that are similar to an armadillo's, both genders have plates on the back of the neck down to their withers, but mature females have extra plates over their hips to help protect them from the males when they mate. Mature males grow thick curled horns on their heads that resemble ram's horns, they use these and their nose horns to fight for the right to mate and to stay in charge. The males are larger than the females, but the creature is rather big over all. An average female stands about 23-24 hands at the shoulder and can weigh around 2 tons (4,000 lbs) when fully mature. An average male stands about 25 hands at the shoulder and can weigh up to 2.5 tons (5,000 lbs) when fully mature. The equid can be a variaty of colors. They can be similar to natural horse colors like roan, palamino, buckskin, etc. Or they can be very odd colors like green or red, but they normally have rather dull coat colors to help with camoflauge even if they are unnatural colors like reds or blues. The armor plates are duller in color on females and brighter on males since it's the males that must attract the female's attention.
Behavior:
The Equids tend to live in large groups called Colonies with a single bull leading the group, but lesser males may join him. Unlike most equines, the lead bull only mates with a select few females, normally only up to 4, while the other subserviant males in the group fight eachother over the other females. In an average Colony, there is up to 2-3 females per male, but only if the lead bull allows others to join his group, if he doesn't then all the females he gathers are his to breed, but there will be other males harrassing him for them constantly. A lead bull will normally allow up to 5 or even 6 males into his group, these lesser males serve as protectors and guards, but during breeding season they are free to roam around in search of females as long as they leave the lead bull's females alone. The Equids breed in the dry season and birth in the wet season when the rains return along with the prey. There are only the two seasons on the island, the dry and the wet, which corrispods to our own seasons. The dry season lasts from the end of our spring to the beginning of our winter, while the wet season lasts from the end of our fall to the beginning of summer, see the chart below if you're confused.
Once the Dry season starts, the males become more and more aggressive while the females start their heat cycles. The female's cycles are different from a normal equine's, they go into an immediate deep heat instead of a graduale one, but the heat only lasts a day or maybe two before it passes and then waits nearly a week for another to appear. Males are driven crazy by the heat cycles, a female can be open for a male one day and then aggressive and closed off the next day. The males have bouts of fighting about once a week when the females are in their heats, but then has a week to recooperate and round up females before another bout of fighting and heat begins again. All this craziness lasts until all the females are covered and are no longer going into their heats, which is normally half way through the dry season.
Females will start droping foals (sometimes called Calves) almost half way through the Wet season depending on when they were covered the previous season. According to our seasons and months, females are covered and then are pregnant for around 8 months before birthing. Calves are able to eat meat right from the time they are born, which gives them more minerals and vitamins they need to grow. Female calves are not born with the extra plates over the hips, the plates will grow in once the calf starts becoming mature. Male Calves don't have their ram horns until maturity, just like the female's plates, and their nose horns will grow as they do. Mothers are ver protective of their calves and can kill if necessary. After the calves are born, Colonies are actually rather friendly towards eachother since the mares are not in heat and there is no aggression between males until the Dry season starts back up and once it does, Colonies are hostile towards eachother while they protect their mares and foals from overly aggessive males. When females are back in heat for the month-long breeding season, the big cycle starts all over again.
