What is a Mutato?

In a rapidly changing world of rapidly accumulating toxic waste, Mutatoes take to the sky.
These creatures, affectionately dubbed Mutatoes, are a sad combination of an unknown creature, radioactive material, and a potato.
They live in the sky and consume UV radiation. They are the new era of Super Man.

At birth Mutatoes are about the size of a potato and can grow to around the size of a basketball.
Generally they are busy creatures who would prefer flying to being carried.
The Mutato is filled with the same kind of gases that its tail is made of.
These gases are currently unidentified, but are lighter than air- enabling them to fly.
They can stay in the air for a maximum of 20 hours straight before they need to land and "rest".
Though, when they can't be in the air, Mutatoes pace... a lot.

Well. I probably shouldn't even be saying this. But everyone knows the angels are named 'Erika' and how do we know this isn't what they look like?

We don't.

There are no such thing as angels, after all.

Extra:

Well. To be perfectly honest, I have no real extra-- I've got a couple other projects eating up my time, and I know my drawing skills are nowhere near good enough to try drawing this mutato (the shifting design keeps kinda throwing me off when I even think about it xD). But I can promise that should I win, it will be going to the home of a true Night Vale fan, be given a place on my character thread, and probably get to hang out in my signature for a while (And will never be fed wheat or wheat by-products.)

Reason for Choosing the Name; The design kind of reminds me of stars, purple stars, which led to star-gazing; also the eye in the –title- design looks like it’s staring at me {or gazing…..}
Mutato's Favourite Song; Stars by Simply Red
She loves it's soulfulness, how she can drift away on a little cloud while listening, not get blared awake like with other songs. She also likes how the chorus mentions stars, her favourite things
Extra; Personality; Gazer is a calm, patient mutato whose attention span seems to go on for eternity. This makes her the perfect person to just have a rant to, as she will sit there for hours, listening and nodding at the appropriate moments.
She has also been known to have sat in a tree for two hours just to see [url]Halley's Comet[/url], as she didn't want to take any chances of missing it.
All in all, a lovely mutato to befriend.

Pareidolia. At least, it would be if I won.

+Why:

It's a technical term for the psychological phenomenon that causes
us humans to see faces in a cliff-side, bunnies in the clouds,
or grasping hands in the place of old driftwood. And what
child hasn't come awake in the middle of the night only to lay
eyes on the vague outline of a coat tossed over a chair in the
corner - now a monster, come to gobble them up? Of course
there's a filpside. When you're looking for a viper hidden in
the leaves or a tiger stalking through the grass, sometimes
Pareidolia keeps us from seeing what's really there - Until
It's too late. The concept of Pareidolia sprang to mind
immediately upon seeing the design for this Mutato - It's so
dark, lovely and surrealistic.

Disguise

Like many features of the setting of Night Vale, this Mutato is ever-changing,
quite possibly always wearing a disguise. How are we sure if this is what
it truly looks like? Is it hiding something?
Some answers may be revealed while others remain hidden.. In truth, we may never know.

I'd name this lovely fellow Abyss.


I've never listened to Night Vale before (though I did hear about it), so the first thing that came to my mind was the saying; "When you gaze into the abyss, the abyss gazes back into you." The saying by the philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche is actually longer and goes like this: "Battle not with monsters lest ye become a monster; and if you gaze into the abyss the abyss gazes into you." This is pretty much a warning to not become the monsters you fight. The eye, the mysterious design and pretty much everything else about this mutato reminds me of the monster inside of all of us, just waiting for the right moment to break free from the deep, dark depths of our subconciousness in which they hide to take over our mind and corrupt us to make us their servant. And usually, we don't even notice it. After all, we are always in charge over our mind and body, we alone are the ones thinking and doing things thanks to our free will... right?
Or maybe your always controlled by something else, even now it makes you read this. Of course you think that you are in charge, but only because the... thing inside of you wants you to think it. It wants you to feel safe and comfortable so you won't even attempt to fight it. Because in the end, you are the one who created it and it needs you, your mind and your body as a vessel to live in and to stay alive...
And have you ever thought about that maybe, all the people we consider insane, the ones who see and hear things we don't... that those people are just much more aware of what really surrounds us? Maybe the majority of us has some kind of mind protection so we don't see those horrible things and hear those evil, little whispers and commands? Of course that's just a silly theory, but you can never be too sure if I'm not right... Stay save, my friend. Stay save and don't let them enslave you completely. Because they are always watching and will not waste an opportunity to continue destroying you.


Two Hearts by The Birthday Massacre
I've mainly focused on the monster in everyone thing I talked about earlier.
Two hearts can be compared to our own heart and spirit and the heart and spirit of the darkness in us.
The heart of the monster constantly beats ours to influence our thoughts and action, but ours chooses to ignore it and look away to keep ourselves what we consider sane.
Then the line 'the danger's in the subtlety between the evening and the night' can also be related to how dangerous it is to not know if we actually are the ones in charge or not, how subtle and small the line between our choices and the monster's choices are.
'Erasing every part of me that's in between the lines' can be taken as the monster changing us and erasing anything they don't lik. Good personality traist for example, such as honesty, kindness, generosity, etc.
